  • Here we have a very rare Mexican bug, the last year of production 2003 in Mexico. We know they are all over Mexico and many parts of Central and South America. To find one here in the states is a really nice treat, enjoy!

In the 1990's there were two companies (in Nogales, Arizona /BeetlMex/ and somewhere in New Mexico I think) that were taking old US Beetles out of the junkyard, getting them registered, stripping them to the pan, then replacing everything else with a brand new Beetle from Mexico. I don't remember if they stripped the Beetle in Mexico and brought the parts over or if they took the pan to Mexico and did it there. It was 100% legal as long as the pan and shifter tunnel where the VIN was remained - everything else was considered a replacement part. Your title would list the car as a 1960's or 70's Beetle, which was cool because then you missed a lot of the emissions testing like they do around here.
Demand was very high and they sold a lot of these, and I've seen them on the road recently. You paid for the purchase of a Beetle in Mexico, a rebuild cost, and some delivery and handling fees. But they both got shut down when it was discovered that instead of stripping both cars and transferring the parts like advertised, they were just grinding off the Mexican VIN on the new car and stamping a legally registered US VIN in it's place. That was a no-no. Not sure why no one else has ever tried this, maybe there's new laws preventing it. But I could take a US pan and basically add replacement parts until I have a complete car.

There is no fee for importing a car from mexico for personal use. You just fill out 2 sheets of paper work and pay a 3 percent tax as long as its 25 years or older. I got a 1993 beetle for 1500 bucks in mexico. They are KIND OF hard to find in good condition though.

I found a 1999 Mexican-spec Beetle that looked EXACTLY like this one does, with the exception of it having the factory steering wheel (this one came off a GTI MK2 most likely), and it also had an all black cloth interior instead of this grey pattern. It was $9,000 and had less mileage than this one did (around the 25,000 mile mark), and I cannot tell you how badly I wanted it as my first car. Unfortunately, my parents weren’t convinced with it being safe enough, so they got me a 2015 Beetle instead. But I absolutely love my current Beetle.

It's very easy to understand the year but first the orange label says in spanish 'Next Service' --> 2500 Km written in pencil.
The number printed on every glass is related to the very last part un the chassis number: it's prevenction against theft in order to relate it from the unique chassis.
The complete chassis number I beleive shuold be
    -- 3VWS1A1B + [VARIABLE CHECK DIGIT] + 3M + 905710 --
    - 3VWS1A1B is related to VW manufacter in Mexico and type 1 beetle the model with injection fuel (ACD engine produced in Mexico since model year 1993)
    - A variable check digit
    - '3' DIGIT for MODEL YEAR --> 2003. You were right. Remember that also in mexico model year production usually start during the the end of summer of the previous year. So it could be also produced in late 2002.
    - 'M' production plant Puebla, Mexico. I you look to the all new beetles there in US as well as here in Europe they have 'M' in this 7th position from right. Every single NB come from that plant!!!
    - 905710 serial number (I've noticed they started all from 90. So it should be the 5710th of the model year 2003.
PS Last 3000 (but not only, they start from 4M2163 up to 4M5162) Ultima Edition beetles produced in 2003 were having the '4' digit so officially they are model year 2004. So officially this beetle is not the 'last model year' of production but probably the last year !!!! :-)
    cheers.

Eduardo l not 100 percent sure, but I think it’s just needs to be 20 years old to fall under a classic car clause, and you should be able to import. But it might still need to pass your states smog laws, here in California anything 72 and under is smog exempt.

How did you get all the paper work to bring it to USA?

    • @Luisgtm95
      @Luisgtm95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

If you have the same nationality as the car and you are the owner or authorized by the owner, talking about foreign cars, you can go to the US and drive it legally even if the car does not abide by US regulations or is not imported, just as long as it is temporary, you do not intend to sell the car without proper import procedures, and that you provide proof of insurance by a US insurer which is not hard nor expensive to obtain, specially for a few days or weeks . So if you are German and you ship your Opel to the US only to drive it there for a while and then ship it back to germany, no problem, you can do so. Its easier for Mexicans or Canadians who can just drive across the border, not much paperwork needed, just have proof of insurance in case you are stopped by police or asked for it at entry.
