  • @leahmarie112

    You’re right about Frodo’s somber mood being from the ring. The moment he put it on it began to change him. Hobbits are so isolated from the evils of the world and Frodo has to learn about them so quickly. He’s essentially suffering trauma every moment he has it on, yet sadly he’s the only one strong enough to carry it...

    The creature Gandalf is fighting in the beginning is called a Balrog. Without getting to nerdy on you, the Balrog is basically Gandalfs equal, just evil (Both are somehting called Maiar, but the Balrog were corrupted by Melkor aka Morgoth who is basically the devil.) Melkor/Morgoth is also responsible for Saurons ( depicted by the flaming eye in these movies) turn to evil as well. Great reaction as always man!

    • @wonderboy13579
      @wonderboy13579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      One thing I was always fascinated with when talking about this series with others who aren't as familiar is people's response saying "if Gandalf is so powerful, why doesn't he just use magic and kick everyone's ass?" Whenever I see breakdowns of the Maia and their powers, I always think it important to mention that all the Istari or "wizards" were given instruction on the role they were to play in middle earth, with strict instruction from the Vala (gods or angels) to not try and fight the threat themselves, but to advise and lead the free peoples.
      TLDR: Gandalf is an immortal being much like Sauron and Balrogs, but he has a handicap on his powers that were enforced on him.
      If any other Tolkien experts want to clarify my characterization of this, that would be most welcome!

    • @andrewmajor2209
      @andrewmajor2209 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@wonderboy13579 Exactly! If Gandalf suddenly started using his magic, the Valar would simply take it away, along with Gandalf. He is meant to be a supreme advisor and a temporary sinew to bind the world of men together. "I am Sauruman, or rather Sauruman as he should have been." The Valar were extremely upset with Saurmans choices (He was previously the most powerful of the Istari in Middle Earth) and therefore sent Gandalf back with much more power and wisdom to offset the damage of his betrayal.

      @@norXmal As I recall, they were forbidden to dominate others (as in, force people to do something, even if that would save them) and they were forbidden to use their powers against Sauron directly. I was never sure how that applied to using their powers against Orcs or other threats the find. Clearly Gandalf felt justified in letting loose against the Balrog, so that is an example I think of a time when the Istari could use their powers.

    • @Haxmaxxen
      @Haxmaxxen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well fellbeasts are really Tolkiens version of Wyverns. The key difference between them and dragons is that they only have 2 legs, while the dragons got 4. In most historical discriptions although varied, dragons are much more intelligent creatures than wyverns. Not all dragons are big however and spit fire like Smaug for instance. In the lord of the ring saga however dragons were created by the first dark lord, Saurons master Melkor "Morgoth". Their origin are not fully established but most experts think they were either Maia spirits like the balrogs that with the help of Morgoth could take that shape. Or they were simply Maia spirits breeded with reptile like creature, probably something similar to a fellbeast , also by the hand of Morgoth. .

    Please correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t know if this has been explained or if you knew anyway but I like talking about it so here you go 😂 Gandalf was sent back as a replacement for Saruman because Saruman had failed where Gandalf still had a chance to succeed. The wizards, or the Istari Order, were not to seek power but to assist against the rise of Sauron who was disgraced by darkness and could not be redeemed. They also only look like old men because it makes them seem approachable and friendly. Their power was restricted in this form, though. Sauron is a member of the same species, the Maiar, and started off much more pure. His power was not restricted in the same way as Gandalf and the other wizards and, after learning how to work metal from his first master, which lead to the creation of the rings, he was corrupted by Morgoth, the first dark lord, and grew famous and revered as his apprentice. When Morgoth fell, Sauron tricked the other races into making the rings, posing as a respectable figure before he lost his ability to shape shift, and then made the One ring to control the minds of those who wore the others, men most easily.

    Tolkien faught in and survived a war himself, which inspired many details of his stories - it is said that the dead marches are inspired by the experience of hiding in the trenches the soldiers dug out, which filled with water when it rained and the bodies of their fallen men would float in it...
    Looking at it that way makes the place a whole lot more terrible.
    I guess having experienced war is also the main reason for the strong theme of mercy, of not killing or harming carelessly in the movies

    The people that Saruman was talking to were the Dunlanders (and they were humans). It wasn't really clear in the films, but they were the original inhabitants of Rohan. The Rohirrim had cone from further east, taken their land, and driven them off. This was about 500 years before the events of the film, but there was still a lot of mistrust between the Two peoples (I think the Rohirrim were still mistreating them), and Saruman took advantage of this to get them to fight for him.
    This was quite a common theme in Tolkien's works: ancient grudges (e.g dwarfs vs elves) or existing hostilities or mistreatment (various human nations) working to the advantage of Evil, and these problems having to be solved before Sauron can be defeated.
    Even the human soldiers fighting for Sauron were portrayed as not necessarily bad people, but led astray by the lies of their rulers.

But as well as this the Balrog which is the demon like creature Gandalf fights is also a Maiar but one which has been corrupted by the darkness, they are still very strong even though Gandalf beat it. If your wondering what corrupted them we will have to talk about Melkor and the Valar (if Maiar are Demi-Gods, then Melkor who is a Valar would be a God), he was the original dark lord and Sauron was his Second in command, the Balrog were his personal bodyguard.

    Loving the observations about the ring and it's owners during these reactions. Interesting to see you note during this one that gollum likes the ring so much that he calls it's current owner "master". This actually ties in with the ring's ability to dominate and control the minds of others which frodo is (mildly) tapping into. It's also why the black riders in the last film were slightly hesitant when confronting frodo on weathertop.

    Fun tidbit: that scene by all the burned orc bodies where Aragorn kicks the helmet and then screams? That wasn't acting; it was actual pain. Viggo kicked the helmet wrong and actually broke a couple of his toes.

    All of these species occupy Middle Earth together. The thing is at this point in “history” the more magical creatures are dwindling in numbers and the race of Men is becoming more prominent. The people attacking that village are also men, but very corrupt and disenfranchised men who Sauruman manipulated.
