Hello Kris, I just recently got myself one of these in Chessie from an 2009 run, I had a similar problem with my on the rotation of the crane house from the platform, looking at the instructions I noticed 4 screws that would hold the cab around the center pivoting point, just slightly loosen those screws and your crane should pivot just fine. Great review!
Ah, did you notice the crank tool in the ox? It goes into the round holes on either side of the body to raise and lower the boom, and to adjust the hook height. It’s basically the same model Athearn has been offering for over 50 years. My first one came as a Blue Box kit in 1968.
It's the same crane from the 60' & 70's set, they did add grab irons. The 2 holes (one on each side) are where the "crank" goes, one raises the boom the other raises the hook, check the box for them or they may be inside crane body, if not get another crane on ebay This is a steam powered crane that's why the large stack. It' looks nice , but unless they added weight and put better trucks on it , it won't pull well. here's an Athern crane with the crank tool $14.95 + $8.40 shipping on Ebay www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1950s-ATHEARN-HO-Scale-PRR-200-Ton-Crane-RTR-Good-Condition/133575767179?hash=item1f19bc748b:g:yFUAAOSwjXtfrzCV
@@GoViaorgohome It used to be a small wheel with a shank sticking out from the middle with a square end. If you look at the blow up of the crane you can see the thread wrapped around the shafts with a bigger end towards the holes in the side of the cab. If you don't have the "crank" try using a wooden kitchen match to see if it fits in the end of the shaft, or if you have a lot of styrene pieces for scratch building see if you can get anything to work it a little so you know what size the hole is. Oh a plastic tie or wooden tie might be a good place to start. At any rate RR is looking great and you do awesome videos. Let me know how you get it to work, Chuck from the old RVRR
It should have came with a key type crank handle there is a small hole on each side the key goes in the small hole one side is for the boom and the other side is for the cables
This is on their site Rotating boom Boom raises and lowers Blocks raise and lower Flat car with boom support arms Fully-assembled and ready to run out of the box Highly-detailed, injection-molded body Painted and printed for realistic decoration Weighted for trouble free operation Trucks with machined metal wheels and RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track Body mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers Window packaging for easy viewing plus interior plastic blister safely holds the model for convenient storage Replacement parts available Minimum radius: 18”
It looks really nice. It's too bad it just have any adjustable features but at the same time there is less to go wrong and since there is no weird controls it looks super realistic. Great unboxing!
The couplers are too low on the car the crane sits. I had a problem like that with a Walthers Proto Type car. I had to change the wheels to 36" from 33" and add washers to the trucks. It looks good but in my opinion not worth the cash. Seems to be a Rapido price without the detail. You really need a coupler guage.
I got one of those kits from Athern back around 2005, if I’m right then there should be a hole on the side of it that allows you raise and lower the crane that I think came with a key of some sort in the package. Hope this can be of some help
It’s a. Nice but,..... so not to be a Debbie Downer, but ONR never had 200 ton cranes. The paint scheme is correct for the piece as it was the last version they painted on the remaining crane they did have before retiring them in favour of wreck contractors and side boom dozers for wreck clean ups. As for positioning the boom, check the underside of the plastic shell it was delivered in , I’m betting the small s shaped Allen key is taped on the back. You should be able to raise and lower the boom and adjust the main hook and the auxiliary one. The boom should fit in to the cradle on the idler or boom tender car. Full disclosure, I modelled a 200 ton crane in ONR in the scheme previous to yours, using a Rocco/ Model Power crane. To get an authentic one would take a lot of scratch building from parts and other kits to get close to the 150 toners that ONR had two of at one point. Lastly try a drop or two of oil one the turntable so the crane housing swings more freely. If it’s that tight it will probably derail the tender car in allot of curves and tight crossovers.
It`s a good basis for a kit-bash conversion if you are willing to develop the skills to model. Thus the term "model" railroading. This is the way Athearn began many years ago before your time. As it stands it is very "toy" like in it`s execution and somewhat of a money grab by Athearn. Cheers.
Wow it seems alot of manufacturers are shitting the bed on quality control. For the price they are demanding now the execution is far from excellent. Simple stuff like coupler hight should not be an issue, among the other stuff wrong with this model.
Great review as always. Too bad about the couplers. Can’t wait to see it fly around your layout and destroy low hanging structures. :) That’s something I would do and have done.
I like your collection. However, I noticed that you got a lot of Ontario Northland rolling stock. I guess you do not do interchange with other railroads outside the ONT?
Thank you. I love my onr and that shows. The second would be Via rail and Go transit. I have started collecting more CN as there is a CN and CP interchange in north bay. The north bay shop does a lot of CN repair as well. I am yet to expand on that though I have thought about what could be next. As soon as my CN is in a good place I can and will branch out a bit more.
Kris that looks beautiful! I have one of the older releases that is SP. Mine came with a little wrench that I can use to raise/lower the boom and both hooks. I wish they made a version that has little motors on the inside. Also looks like you might have to add washers on the trucks on the boom tender. Let me know if you need me to create a video to demo mine, even if its an older release. - Jason
Really enjoyed your review and unboxing. After I get moved in I'll have to show my antique crane car. Also check out this athearn animation of a similar crane to yours. I think it will shed some light on how the crane operates as well as how low the boom can go for clearance around the track. th-cam.com/video/RXpvp5mIXvU/w-d-xo.html

I found it after. It was small and reflective. It was taped to the inside so not easy to find. Really hard to find.
its suppose to come with a little tool to put in the small holes on the sides of the crane to raise and lower it
Very nice, Kris. Thanks for sharing. Nice review.

Thanks. I will check the box again as nothing stood out to me.

That flap on the roof lift upward to raise the Boom
I got the exact same one! Happy with the detail, but could easily be a bit better IMO.
little metal key that was in the top corner of the plastic sleeve.
So I did find the key... basically needed a search team for it. It’s super small and I can see someone loosing it. But it works so not bad.
That is a great looking crane, thanks for sharing. Dave

I ended up finding it in the package after. It was small and silver so I did not see it at all.
Thanks for watching

This is neat. I had one when I was younger but never looked at new ones. Amazing that you got it in Ontario NorthLand aswell.

At this point I honestly do. It would help me a lot lol. Next big purchase for sure.

Yep, Athearn couplers aren’t the best...had to change out all of mine...nice car though. Keep it on the layout on your MOW track
Nice video, make an ebay seache on "Roco Crane" and you will see many more cranes like this but in other color schemes.
looks just like the old blue box units from a life time ago. round holes in the side are for an allen wrench to bove boom and hooks

Nice video I have one in the works

That would be a cool idea. All the little trick to make something run or work better. The community could always use more of that.
