      Yes, but pretty sure even the official walkthrough guide listed this boss as METAL Sonic/ Metal Super Sonic(Yes it had separate entries for both phases). I guess given how it looks different from Metal Sonic's usual look, it's not that surprising they went with a different name.

    Borderlands 2 has a good example. After a long and emotional slog through the game you finally confront Handsome Jack in a fairly decent boss battle. And instead of rolling the credits, a battered and bloodied Jack manages to activate The Warrior and you get the real final battle. After defeating the Warrior, then you get to kill Jack... or let Lilith do it. Honestly, let the lady do the honors. She deserves it.

    • @Aenorial
      @Aenorial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I'd argue the Warrior is not really a surprise as it is established pretty clearly that it's Jack's objective to awaken it. You also have to remember that the first Borderlands game had a vault monster as it's final boss, so players wouldn't have expected to finish this game without an alien monster boss fight.

      Jack was pretty easy but the warrior was even easier. it would go 'rawr', I'd shoot it, it would go 'rawr' and hide, then pop up somewhere else, go 'rawr', get shot, then it would hide... I don't think it attacked a single time. I don't think I was overgeared or leveled or anything either. I still had sidequests that were like 2 levels higher than me, and my main gun was 2 levels lower than me, and not even a unique.

You can chip away at his health by hitting his feet and wherever else you can reach but it's not how the game wants you to kill him; it also takes 10 or so minutes of constant attacking and dodging to do it. The Behemoth Juggernaut from Warframe. This boss comes at the end of the quest called "The Jordas Precept". The first hints that something is amiss actually comes as soon as you enter the mission, well before you even see the Behemoth Juggernaut, as Jordas, the Cephalon(basically a human conscience trapped in a computer) you have been trying to help thus far begins ridiculing you needlessly, despite being as prepared as he asked you to be for the fight with the golem. I actually took out the Behemoth Juggernaut in one hit, which is surprising. Then the whole ship is torn apart as your personal Cephalon tells you that he is "detecting a larger Infested lifeform. As a player who plays Elden Ring on the first days. Renalla is easy for a reason that it is a matter of finding out how to beat her. And as the game is popular, most people saw how to beat her on the internet even before meeting her. The feeling of fighting her without knowing how to break her shield beforehand is more like the feeling of solving a puzzle than beating a hard boss.
    I would say that beating her 2nd, 3rd or so-on times is kinda repetitive but the first time is fun and unique.
    I would say that she is a remarkable boss.

    Kraid in Super Metroid. When the game first came out, people were only familiar with Kraid from the NES game, where he was the same height as Samus. In Super Metroid, as you’re heading to Kraid’s lair, you encounter “False Kraid”, who is the same height as Samus, but goes down pretty easily. Just a few rooms later, you encounter the real Kraid who is now several stories tall.

    The first fight with Biggs and Wedge in FFVIII. They are slightly (emphasis on slightly) stronger versions of the same enemies you've been fighting in the area, but suddenly a wind sweeps them away and the actual boss fight starts with Elvoret (not a particularly difficult boss, but miles above the first part of the fight).

    • @DarkestFiction
      @DarkestFiction 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elvoret SUCKED the first time I played FFVIII. He just rinsed the shit out of me, and I wasn't allowed to use the memory card, so I had to deal with him ANY time I wanted to play. Then I learned about Disc 1 Lionheart, and he didn't cause trouble. Then you get to Disc 3 in Lunatic Pandora, and Elvoret is just a common enemy there, and you feel dumb about him beating you up on Disc 1.

    • @TheBlank49
      @TheBlank49 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, Elvoret did stomp on me the first time I fought him (I unfortunately had thunder junctioned to my elemental attack which he is strong against, so I was reliant on underleveled summons and magic which I hadn't drawn nearly enough of).

    In UN Squadron on the SNES, on the final level you face off against an Osprey. The game has no mini-bosses. Just a single boss at the end of each of level. So when you see this massive Osprey & thr music changes, you assume it's the final boss. It's super easy. You just equip the Falcon special weapon to shoot the missle launchers it shoots on the ground. It's main gun doesn't even shoot at you. It's main gun is angled towards the ground & it flies so low you are never in range. It shoots missles out the top. Just stay to the left & never fly over it & you won't be hit. Then as you think the game is ending the music changes again as you face off against the Heavy Bomber
    Project 4 Airship. A "plane" that makes the Spruce Goose look like an old time Bi-Plane. It's so big you can't see it all at once. It spans 3 screens. And in the game you'll find yourself in bullet hells for a minute, but if your quick enough & we'll armed enough you can take out everything shooting at you pretty quickly. The Heavy Bomber Project 4 Airship has some weapons that can't be destroyed so you have to keep dodging. It also has planes that fly out of it. Worst of all, you can only defeat it by bombing or napalming the center of the to expose it's core, which you can only do damage to if it doesn't retract. So unless you have enough special weapons left that can be dropped, shot upwards, or the Thunder Laser which is the only weapon that can shoot through the front of the ship to hit the core, you are in for an extremely long boss battle.
    Also, when game music is stressful just mute your TV. The music is designed to rattle you to make the game play harder.

    Funny story about Rennala's boss fight. This was before the nerf so casting still took time and battlebird-achu was still a viable fighting option. When I first fought Rennala I spent more time on the first phase than the second. I hadn't realised the trick to the "kill the right child" mechanic and because from my perspective Rennala was just randomly falling every now and then when I killed a seemingly arbitrary number of cherub pupils, I was mowing through those albinauric undergraduates like nobody's business until I finally reached the second phase. After the cutscene, we swooped in and between pre-nerfed battlebird and my heavy highland axe we interupted all her attack animations stunlocking Rennala to death without ever seeing one spell or summon.

    Boss arenas are suppose to portray how mighty boss is while providing the player a fair advantage against the boss the player can use (unless you count times the arena was set up so that way you use enemy arena to beat them self) but occasionally you ran into boss arena gives you such a severe advantage that wonder why boss had it built in first place. For example the boss arena for monarch in surge 2 ,only time I won against boss without dying and healing (I think I definitely didn’t die) in game I died to almost everything, as her arena make way to easy dodge her attacks (which allow me strike whenever she recovering from exhaustion without worry being hit) even when she does make part floor electrified.

    I'd like to nominate Banjo Kazooie.
    I typical Rare game for N64. cheerful, relatively easy except for some small annoying parts like the rubberbanding failure of a father polar bear. Combat has always been very simple.
    After world 9, you come across a room filled with Lava and play questionaire against Gruntilda. Fairly easy if you have played the game properly and generally just remember the game a bit.
    You win; credits seem to roll, but then you get kicked back into the game to pursue Gruntilda up to the roof of her castle. The actual boss fight has many phases, require a lot of moves you picked up along the way, executed with precision under pressure of Gruntilda firing fireballs at you at a fast rate. Especially the requirement to hit targets with eggs without being able to aim properly while you have to stand still while being shot at is very hard. Gruntilda can also knock you off the roof killing you instantly, hit you with undodgeable attacks that require a limited resource to stop and the general controls of an N64 controller made this bossfight very hard compared to the rest of the game.

    On a related note, certain games difficulty systems, including boss encounters, are built around multiple play throughs were the difficulty increases each time for greater rewards. Back 4 Blood, The Borderlands series and Rogue-lites are some of these types of games. In B4B, players kept trying to play the hardest difficulty their first time out without unlocking a good variety of cards through multiple play throughs that make the increased difficulties manageable. This is why some games even have Story Mode difficulty to teach players the boss mechanics, so they can replay the game on harder difficulties for better rewards while still gaining XP an unlocking things in their first (easy) play through.

    Yahtzee in his Zero Punctuation review of the game raged about Rennala a bit ("moony cow" was used, I believed) because of how annoying phase 1 is when having to repeatedly get through it to get to phase 2 only to die yet again to her attacks because of not having time to learn them. As for that beam attack (azure something), I wonder if that's been nerfed much at all. I watched one guy use it to absolutely melt Mohg in mere seconds because it's so easy to use it while regenerating FP and Mohg doesn't move out of the way of it. The guy even said that it shouldn't be that easy to do that. Beam attacks like that one suck (see Soul of Cinder) if you get hit by them directly and can't get out of the way due to low stamina or no room. Ludwig's wave of magic that goes out from when he slams the sword down is similarly devastating
    I've seen this happen with other FS bosses. Nameless King being one of them with phase 1 not being terrible but then absolutely wreaking players in phase 2. That said, I always expect a trick with their bosses. If phase 1 is nearly the same fighting all the way through the health bar, then expect a second phase (or 3rd in the case of Sister Friede) with its own health bar; see Abyss Watchers, Soul of Cinder, and such. If the fight changes at around the half health point, then the fight will likely end when the health bar is gone; see Iudex Gundyr, Ludwig, and the vast majority of FS bosses, really.
    Love the "Scot-ish" bit, Andy. :D The dog howling in Symphony of the Night sound like a crowing chicken now really crowing properly, lol.

      Azur comet and nope still broke my strong. They did accidentally fix how powerful it was by reducing the time the unlimited FP flask worked from 10 seconds to 5 seconds which meant you got like 1.5-2 seconds of infinite FP before you quickly drained the bar. But then they fixed that because they had no intention of decreasing the unlimited FP flask.
      Honestly when that flask was broken it made using spells that relied on it useless. My deal was using it as a last ditch if I was out of all my other flasks my combo was infinite FP and half HP refill, I never liked the azur comet spell cause it was very cheap - I did use it on one boss to see if it was legit as strong as people said
