- Rain Water Is Better For Your Garden, Pure And Simple! There's no debate, plants grow better when watered with rain water, than they do with tap water. But why is that? What makes rain water so special that our plants and crops literally grow and behave more vibrant and productive when we use it?
Well (ha ha get it?), in this video, I'll show you all the ways that rain water is superior to tap water and what it is about that tap water that could be holding our plants back.

Over the years I’ve noticed a burst of growth after a natural rain vs watering from a chlorinated source. Rainwater picks up nitrogen in the air may be why, plus the additives in tap water are counter productive to growth.😀 thanks Jeff for bringing this subject forward.

If you have to use chlorinated tap water, you can mitigate its effects by leaving it to 'gas off' for a few days. I collect rain water whenever I can,m but sometimes we can get a drought as long as 6-8 weeks. So I fill the barrels with tap water, take off the lids and leave them in the sun. After a few days, at most a week, the water is nice and warm and chlorine free. And oftentimes it already has some life growing in it ready to add to the nutrients for the soil. This mehodalso reduces the shock of watering with cold water.

I got into rainwater a few years back after a good rain. I'd taken a picture of my garden on June 1st. My tomatoes were knee high. I had gotten them out early and was proud of their size. We had a 3 day rain start that evening. I took a picture in June 10 and they'd grown up to my waist. The difference in ten days from the rainwater was undeniable
It really is liquid magic. It's astonishing.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms were in a rainy spell right now. I put my squash and zucchini in the ground yesterday before it started. It's supposed to rain the next five days. I'm late gett'n my rain barrel hooked up and it hurts! I have a kiddie pool and a tote or two situated to catch water for now!

True green thumbers collect rainwater! I have kid pools ice chests buckets and anything that'll fill up some good ol rainwater

I have always used rainwater/melted snow. I wasn't able to at my parents garden in the dry beginning of the growing season affecting overall production. Now I have a rain barrel there.
Its the best. I try whenever I get the chance!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I'm wondering however when using rainwater for hydroponic nutrients and calmag if using all together will create to much nitrogen.
@@blasermann1994 I definitely don't think so. It has some nitrates in it....but not THAT much.
I agree with you 100%. Your point(s) is/are well taken. Here's another. If you live in the country, why waste your well water. We have only used rainwater for the past 50 years. The cost of a well is huge, I know because I had to have a new one drilled last summer. If you are urban, then it saves you the extra cost on your water bill. Water can be hard to come by in some places too. Enjoyed as always Jeff! Take care!

I noticed seed germination and growth after a big rain last month. We just don't get much rain here in California, unfortunately.
Definitely sprouting too! I see that as well.
Very correct as I believe and I always believe the temperature of tap water is cooler and my plants like the ( room temperature as I call it) warmer is better.

I had a Springer Spaniel for about a decade. Organic dog 95%. I haul water home from my cabin up north to drink. By default I'd give it to the dog. In the decade I had that dog, the neighbors went thru 5dogs that all died, 4 from "cancer" and 1 from parvo......
I've yet to drink tap water even thru multiple filters since 2009. And just recently switched to a rain water collection&filter system that I run back to the house to use for normal usage. The city water is beyond disgusting here. And while rainwater is "great"..... I'll take it over poison.

Question for you. Our local department of natural resources, in Maryland, has instructions on their web site about how to make a rain barrel. But, they say not to use rain collected from a hours roof to water plants you may eat, only use the water on lawns and flowers, etc. anyone with differing opinions?
Probably due to chemicals either in the shingles or from people spraying moss retardants on their rooves.
I understand why rain water is better, I can see the difference when it rains. I have a rain barrel , catching the water from my gutter. But my wife did not like it close to the house 🤪, because was scared it would overflow and come into the house. I water issue before, but I fixed it. Can I do the same thing with the shed and I am worried about collecting water in buckets, because mosquitoes

Hi Jeff, I was wondering about saving rain water because someone told me that unless I had a metal roof it's not a good idea but our tap water is full of chlorine and chloramines and fluoride. So if there's a chemical on the asphalt roof which one is safer ? I'd really appreciate your input . The roof is 9 yrs old .
So what can we do if we are stuck with faucet water for our crops? I live in Arizona and we hardly get any rain all year. Is there a way to make our faucet water less harmful?
Just collect what you can Cinthya and if you're worried about soil life, you can always let the water sit in a watering can overnight to dissipate some of the chlorines.
It hasn't rained here in 9 days, no rain forecasted for at least another week. I don't have much of a choice.
My local water has chloramine instead of chlorine, it evaporates quicker. I use the shower setting on the hose to fill a bucket and let that sit a few minutes. For chlorine, I'd water my plants from the bucket, then fill it for the next watering. 'Safe' for fish tanks should help, but using the fish water when cleaning tanks is better!

Thank you so much for all of this! I do have a genuine question still regarding water- i live near a large river, and it would be amazingly easy to collect alot of it for my garden! Is riverwater safe for garden plants??

Right??? So weird. So very weird. Most greens are actually alkaline when you eat them.....but grow better in slightly acidic. You're right, very backwards, LOL!
