  • How To Clean Linoleum Floors!
    In this video I will be showing how to clean linoleum floors. If your linoleum floors have been neglected for years and have stains or buildup, I will give you a simple step-by-step process to follow to restore them back to life!
    Lets go over the general maintenance cleaning:
    1. Sweep or vacuum all trash and crumbs.
    2. Mop with a gallon of water, 1 cup of vinegar and a squirt of dish soap.
    3. Let dry
    4. Remove black scuff marks with a tennis ball
    Restore process:
    1. Spray linoleum floors with rubbing alcohol and scrub with a brush. Wipe away dirty liquid with paper towels.
    Things to avoid:
    1. Never use rubber or latex backed rugs on linoleum floors. This will give them those ugly yellow stains. Instead, use colorfast rugs.
    2. Never use ammonia-based cleaners on the linoleum floors. This will strip the polish and damage your floors.

      I have a new commercial client so I can't afford to mess up, but would white spirit / turpentine do the same job without any damage, because I'm thinking most scuff marks are paint/ink/wax from shoes / furniture so oil based & white spirit works miracles for other jobs

    So I just tried this on my laundry room floor and it works. I had tried all types of cleaners and was amazed at what the rubbing alcohol could do. I used scouring pads instead of the brush as this was more effective based on the amount of build up that was on the floor. I never knew that rubber backed mats were a No-No on vinyl floors. Thank You!

    Dude, this worked amazingly well! I did a test square in my kitchen and all the build up dissolved almost instantly. After that I pulled out my trusty deck brush to scrub, my Swiffer Wet Mop to wipe up and went to work--I am NOT about that hands-and-knees life! LOL I live in an apartment and the floors have been needing some love since the day I moved in but nothing I tried from Borax to vinegar to Awesome worked that well. Now my floors look brand new and I can't get over over easy it was. Thank you so much for sharing. 😄

      Old comment but wanted to add, I just watched another video where the man used one of those drill brush heads. 👍Scrubbed with that and water + Dawn degreaser. Did a second wash w a mop & pH cleaner. Wondering if it was Zep. The process definitely degreased & degrimed. My arms hurt just thinking about the size of my floor & the hand scrub method lol

    Happy to see your video. You helped me to realize, I can make a video as well. I was too busy cleaning everything and cooking. I had to wash my mats in the tub with bleachy detergent water and a broom, and allow to air dry. Baking soda did work with alcohol. I scrubbed until I saw a difference with baking soda and alcohol, and let dry. I then added a little cleanser. I scrubbed until I saw a difference and then I let dry. I then added a little dishwasher detergent. I scrubbed until I saw a difference and let dry. I added alcohol then scrubbed until I saw a difference, one final time, with baking soda. I'm sorry it was too much work for a video (I'd never planned to make a video, but I can tell you it worked. 75% of the stain is gone, and yes, it was hard work, very hard.

      @@cindymaun8952 The relatively new (I presume) drill brushes available at Amazon work great for me, I'm a retired Paramedic & my shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, etc. are shot! I'll see if I can attach a pic or link, but ear protection, a variable speed electric drill, 'ear protection' & old clothes......or even the new Dremel Versa (which has it's own pads) and most importantly, a $5 foam knee pad! I'm not sure if he would recommend it, but since they come in different degrees of rigidity of the bristles much like different grit sandpaper, it worked great for me. My floor had decades of buildup, but the above combination was worth every cent, saved my joints, back, time & the floor looks great!

      I just used one brush with a moderate amount of pressure. You can buy the brush at WaL Mart or most any store that sells cleaning supplies. It should be only a couple dollars. If you are going to clean a big floor I would just recommend buying a deck brush so you don't have to get on your hands and knees.

Online elsewhere it says that an asphalt driveway attaching to the bottom of your shoes and onto the floor will create discoloration issues over time too.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If the stain is very old it may be impossible to remove. But I have a few things you can try. If one doesnt wokr move on to the next.
      1.) Use an enzyme cleaner and just follow instructions on label.
      2.) Apply regular old white shaving cream, let sit for 30 minutes, then wipe clean.
      3.) Use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Just pour some on the stain and rub it with a cloth.
      4.) Mix baking soda with water to make a paste. Apply to stain, let sit for 30 minutes then wipe clean.
      5.) Try rubbing a white non-gel toothpaste on it.
      Hope this helps!

      @@CleanWithConfidence I have a few questions. After you use the rubbing alcohol, do you rinse with water and then polish or just polish? Do you have to rinse with water after you mop with water vinegar and dish soap mixture?

      @@evelyngonzalez8028 You just always want to make sure the floor is completely clean and dry before you ever polish a floor. Polish always comes after cleaning.

    Thanks for the video!
    This is worth a try for me.
    Willing to do some scrubbing for those of us that can't replace the floor yet.
    Was tempted to try peel and stick vinyl squares, for kitchen and bathroom.
    But apprehensive about the bathroom after reading about some that had peel up because of the moisture over time.
    This is worth a try first.
    Good tip about the tennis ball, didn't know that.
    Thanks.

    This video is a miracle. Just moved into my first apartment and the previously white floors are yellow, like piss yellow. I only know they were white cuz I tore off an old piece of tape from the floor 🤮

    Since rubbing alcohol is hard to find these days can grain alcohol or vodka be substituted? Would they work?

    Is rubbing alcohol the same as surgical spirits ??

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it should be the same. I believe "Surgical spirits" is what they called it across the pond.

    Would rubbing alcohol work on lily stains? Someone bought us the flowers and they shedded onto linoleum that was only put down in November.

    • @CleanWithConfidence

      Personally, I would try baking soda for that.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Baking soda is a good stain remover. It will remove stains from just about anything. Stainless steel coffee pots, natural stone countertops, and yes even floors!!

    Have you ever had trouble when inhaling the alcohol fumes? I started using this method today, and while it works great the fumes are pretty bad. I have a very large kitchen too 😵😷

      good question, as a recovering alcoholic, we try to avid alcohol-based products, I'm wondering if white spirit / turpentine would do as good a job without damaging the lino finish, the scuff marks are mostly wax/paint/rubber marks so oil-based
