It was 1967 when a right-wing military dictatorship was established in Greece. Six years later, on November 17, a tank crashed Greek university gates, where students protested against the regime. This was the beginning of the end for the Greek Junta.
“Laiko Tragoudaki” (eng. “Folk Song”) is the soundtrack of a 1984 movie that parodies the darkest moment of Greek history, the 1967-1974 military junta. It was composed by Nikos Mamangakis with cleverly chosen lyrics by Nikos Perakis, and became widely popular thanks to the Greek film “Loufa and Parallagi”.
While the song seemingly talks about a bird, it actually refers to the symbol of the Junta, the Phoenix rising from its own flames. It goes one step further, stating that the bird will eventually fly away one day, and all junta supporters will again crawl back to anonymity.

The video session took place at the SEIKILO Museum of Ancient Music, a unique cultural place with interactive tours.
🎙️ Who is Alekos?
Alekos Tsolakis is a virtuoso of the three-string bouzouki and the Greek baglamas and a keen performer of the rebetiko genre, a term used for the urban Greek music of the poorest during the first half of the 20th century.
Together with various musicians of the city, he serves the rebetiko scene of Thessaloniki and the rest of Greece.
Having a special and intensely personal relationship with the instrument, since he is essentially self-taught, he plays with spontaneity and intuition, usually having as a model the pre-war musicians and their aesthetic. His unique playing, full of creativity and passion, established him on the stage and made him recognisable in this niche music scene.
