    I really liked how this one made most of the characters feel like bad guys, of course they end up doing some good but it's not like the movie is trying to say they were heroes all along or anything. They're not outright evil people but they're not heroes either.
    Far better than the first one where they're all like "We're a family!" after spending like a few hours together.
    Loved the whole thing between Bloodsport and Peacemaker, it's funny how it makes a joke at how similar a lot of comic book characters are whilst also making them unique and fun at the same time.

      @@giovan5219 I thought that as well on first watch, like I thought the reason that he took a liking to her was just because he “saw his daughter”in her which is somewhat the case, but if you listen to the conversation it makes more sense. Bloodsport is disinterested the whole time she tells him her story until he realizes how much of a good father she had and how that affected her for the better, and then he reflects on how much of a jerk his own father was to him and how it affected him personally for the worst. and this causes him to realizes how he is making his daughter feel by being a shit father, which makes him want to change. On rewatch it was very clever Imo.

    Val was incredible. It was so heartwarming to see his excitement in being with his children, the old footage showed that was his focus all along. Praying for his recovery, he’s got some guts to put himself out there like that.

    Idris Elba has always been a phenomenal and powerful actor. I think it's sad that in the modern movie landscape, people don't really recognize your greatness in the art form unless you're in a 200 million dollar comic book movie. But in just about everything he's ever done, he's always given Denzel Washington-levels of commitment and gravitas to the role. There's a reason that he was recently considered to possibly be the next James Bond. Too bad it looks like that will never happen...

    • @HungNguyen-sy4oz
      @HungNguyen-sy4oz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it's age. Like, he's 48 now, meaning, if he were to be the next bond, it could easily be another Roger Moore by the last film in the "Idris Elba run".

    • @samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319
      @samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@HungNguyen-sy4oz Are we speaking of acting/presence or the goofy nature of the Moore Bond films? Because if it's the former, I don't see that as being a problem. Edris is like a fine wine, he's only gotten better with age. Whether it be his ability to emote or his physical prowess. And I've never seen him in a role that he hasn't 100% committed to. If it's the latter...well...that all depends on the script writers and the directors. But an actor of Edris' caliber should be able to spin gold from whatever straw he's given.

The documentary wrecked me because my dad had throat cancer years before passing away of pancreatic and the man I crushed on as a young girl watching movies now reminded me of my dad. It was a bizarre transition to realize just how sentimental and human Val really is. I particularly loved his monologue as Mark Twain when he said " all you need is confidence and ignorance ". I started my TH-cam channel on my late dad's birthday with that same sentiment. Val Kilmer is one of the faces of my era. Born in 1970, I was a teenager in the 80s.
    I just caught a movie yesterday, that I somehow missed when it came out in 1985. It was called "Top Secret" and it was so very 80's in it's goofiness, I felt like Val came to me here in 2021 in a time traveling DeLorean. He did the one, also, where he was the genius college kid. He gave us all of that silly stuff when we were teenagers where we got to stop thinking so damned much and take a break to laugh.
    And then he gave us the iconic roles. Make no mistake about it, it was he and Tom Cruise that put me in the Navy. He did Jim Morrison and...man oh man...perhaps his best role ever was the time he was everyone's "Huckleberry."
    And he was never a phony. He always made it clear to us that he HATED those roles. What is not to respect about a man who refuses to pander, and tells you the truth about how he feels? Moreover, what is not to respect about a man who delivers his level of excellence to jobs he hates?
    So, he made his money doing our stuff, and then he no longer had to work for a paycheck and was free to go out and start doing the stuff HE liked and wanted to do. That is a far cry from the whiny little kid who wants only to do his "art" while begging for other people to pay for his life. Done correctly, and making your own money to pay for your own life first, as Kilmer did it, that is not just "respectable," hell, that's the American Dream! Good for him!
    Now his health got in the way and he lost his voice. I am saddened by that, but for him and not for me. As far as I am concerned, Val doesn't owe us anything else. He has already earned his place in our anthology and I am just glad that it was his voice he lost and not his life.
    Enjoy the rest of your life, Val! You have nothing left to prove to us!

    Since I was a little kid and first saw willow, Val Kilmer has been one of my favorite actors and he has always had an ability to be a chameleon and disappear into his characters. I've really missed seeing him on the big screen. I'm not a documentary guy but I guess I'm gonna have to watch this one

    Chris, thank you for reviewing both of these titles. I actually streamed them a couple of days ago. 😊 VAL (2021) was an excellent autobiographical documentary, which I'm partial to to begin with. I always knew I appreciated Mr. Kilmer as a performer, but now I love him all the more as a human being. And, like you, that scene when he was at the convention and had to stop signing autographs reached right into my core. 🏆 THE SUICIDE SQUAD (2021) was all the irreverent fun you described. I love stuff like that... which is borderline offensive, especially if one doesn't have a developed sense of humor. But the more twisted, the better, in my opinion. ⭐👁️ I hope every cinephile gives both of these flicks a chance.

I am a filmmaker myself and last year diagnosed with lupus with it attacking my nervous system taking away my ability to walk and having to go thrrough the healing process to recover what i can back being in my late 20s doctors think i can. Maybe emotionially i can pick up something from his story

    After seeing the promotion of the movie "Batman Forever" in Australia where he basically refused to answer any questions asked by the interviewer, left me with no sympathy for Val Kilmer. Yes, I thought he did some good acting in some of his movies I saw him in but that was it for him. The director even said that he was "psychotic" to work with and things like insisting the crew address him as “Mr. Kilmer", arrive to set late and covered in blankets, stubbed a cigarette out on the face of a cameraman, and muttering his lines so quietly they could not be heard. So much for artistry. Critical Drinker did a video about The Island of Dr Moreau and good ol' Val did not improve. Like the director stating, "Even if I was directing a film called The Life of Val Kilmer, I wouldn’t have that prick in it”, nice one!

    I honestly don’t understand why some people do this. There is room enough for both indie films and big budget films. I say this as a film student who worked in LA… Both films can be great! There’s no reason to exclude bigger budget films because you want indie films to get recognition, you can do both. Put the big budget film first and then follow up with an indie film review. Give people choice… don’t force them to follow your beliefs or ideas or go elsewhere… Especially to those of us who have been with you for years. If that’s the way it has to be for this channel, more power to you, this will be my last video on this channel then. SMH, why not both? Sad.
