    I was in church on Christmas Eve looking at the columns inside and checking to see if there was proper entablature. Missed the pageant as I pondered archetrave and frieze. 😂

    Brent, thanks for all you do. You have single handedly ruined modern builds for me haha. Now everywhere I go I say things like “that dormer is too big”, “that column has no entasis”, or “those windows aren’t true divided lights and have terrible proportions etc.” it’s so sad to see new expensive builds all over the place where the builders are ignorant of this stuff. Things could be so much more beautiful! My hope is that more people will start paying attention to this.

      I wish more people could preserve historic tradition myself, but the market doesn't require all the effort or attention. I think to myself how people will spend so much money on houses that look cheap or simple, but because of the area, etc, they do.

    I love these Wednesday design videos, highlight of my week. I love the fence design really nice. The garage changes are really good. What needs a lot of work is the house front facade. Remove that ugly front door elevation and replace it with a total door surround with something like a pediment or better yet a full pedimented portico to really elevate the front door and facade.

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is that it changes the story and historic charm of the home. Its doable but I need permission. I also would need to find the right entry for this home. It's hard.

    Really nice. Really really nice. The porch on the front, the hierarchy of materiel, the squaring off of the yard: all delicate changes and additions with huge returns. And all in character. Really nice.
    Might I suggest however, a jerkinhead on the garage's gable, as that would put it into better scale.

    Your idea of an addition to the house over the drive would be amazing. The garage is rather unsightly but your changes help. Maybe a nice cupola with windows, lighted at night on the garage between the dormers would add a nice touch. Overall, your changes really help.

    Happy New Year! Good ideas. I guess the constraints with space will come to bear- whether there's room to maneuver into a different garage orientation or whether they'd let you build the porte cochere so close to the property line. I look forward to these Wednesday reviews. I hope you enjoy it and are able to keep it up!

    Genius on the walls, porch and fencing. Would shutters help the facade? The windows look so narrow for the body of the house, I am thinking the shutters would help the scale.

    Hi Brent, I'm curious about that white panel over the front door. Are you going to replace that? Since there isn't any stone trimwork around the windows and there isn't any quoining at the corners it looks out of place. I thought at first it might be "Italian" but at a distance it looks "chinoiserie".
    Are you going for an English or French cottage look for the property?

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an interesting house. Looks like a European cottage, the inside is all colonial revival. Weird. As a preservationist i don't want to change the exterior. I need to talk to the client. More to come.

    Beautifully done as always, but I walked away with a few questions:
    1) is the iron fence bad because it’s not appropriate to the 1915 era, or are they always bad? I always thought brick and iron or stucco and iron had a nice historical look, but you’re saying the way we do it there’s no historical precedent. Is there a precedent for a way that we should be doing them?
    2) this is something bugging me on my own build: window to wall ratio (WWR). When I look at that front elevation, it certainly looks better with the front porch wall, but I keep thinking it needs bigger windows or more windows maybe to break up that monolithic feeling as it is. Is there a good ratio to keep in mind of wall to window when picking a window size for our houses? I fear in my own build my windows are too small or I need more

    • @BrentHull
      @BrentHull  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, 1. the answer is both. There is good precedent for iron fencing but not like we do it and not on a 1915 house. The brick introduces a new element that is currently not present.
      2. WWR is interesting idea. On this house, I have no desire to change windows because of historic integrity and design. It would change this house too much.
