I was just in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia after an endoscopy. I was stuck in the ER for 16 hours while they found a bed. I had IV antibiotics but no IV fluids. When I got to my room I hadn't had any thing to drink or IVs and they still wouldn't let me have water till they had orders. I tried to explain how quickly I could get dehydrated with my ileostomy but ended up frustrated. The charge nurse finally got me water

Several years ago, my husband thought he had a kidney stone. To try and pass it he drank tons of water all day at work. I ended up having to take him to the ER. When they tested his urine, it turns out his sodium levels were so low, that they had to rush in and exchange his IV for one with more sodium in it. When they released him they said "In all my years as a nurse, I've never had to tell a patient this. "you need to go to McDonald's and get some fries, eat some tomatoes and put a bunch of salt on them and drink gatorade".

What a brilliant video, Maggie. You are so well-informed, and put across the information so well. You are such an asset to the ostomy community worldwide! (I'm in the UK.)
I make my own rehydration/electrolyte drink daily. It's full of natural organic ingredients and it is delicious.
Juice and zest of 1 lemon
1 tsp pink Himalayan rock salt
4 pitted dates (wholefood sugar much better than refined sugar + you get the added nutrients from the dates)
1/2 cup kombucha (I make my own - excellent probiotics)
1 cup coconut water (rich in potassium)
Top up to 1 litre with filtered water.
Blitz in a high speed blender for about a minute.
I store it in the fridge and drink it throughout the day.
Your account of your serious attack of dehydration took me back to my first visit to Israel in 1988, pre-stoma days. I got seriously dehydrated because it was mega-hot and I wasn't drinking nearly enough. The leader of our party was an ex-nurse and he got me some rehydration powders and told me to drink 2 litres over the next couple of hours - the first mouthful nearly came up again and he said if I hadn't kept it down I'd have been in hospital. I managed to avoid that. I had all the symptoms you listed (apart from the stoma ones of course, but I had diarrhoea and thought I had a stomach upset). I couldn't remember when I'd last peed. A totally horrible experience!
I drink loads. Apart from my litre of rehydration drink, I also have cranberry juice to help stave off UTIs as I had 2 just recently. I always have water, and also tea and coffee in moderation (I know they are diuretic, esp. coffee so I limit my intake). I don't drink alcohol.
My ileostomy output is always thick. I get a lot of pancaking. I have a parastomal hernia that has already been repaired twice - the last repair failed as I got sepsis due to a post-operative infection caused by a huge infected haematoma in my abdomen. I have been waiting about 3 years for this 3rd repair, due to government Covid policies completely messing up the NHS and causing interminable waiting lists. At least I'm not in pain like so many others waiting. With all the liquid I drink, I would hope the output would get thinner but it all goes into my bladder! There seems to be plenty of advice on how to thicken up runny output, but nothing on how to make it less thick. It tends to get stuck at the top of the bag around Kermit (my stoma) and pancakes, and I have to change the bag really often now, as the hernia has got bigger. Over several years I lost a great deal of weight (deliberately) and my belly skin is very loose which makes the parastomal area quite floppy and unstable, so the surgery I am going to have will also involve a tummy tuck as well as the hernia repair. If it ever happens, that is!!
For the past about 3 years I've been eating whole-food plant-based, very rich in fibre and high in unrefined carbohydrates, and I've noticed that the amount of output I produce has increased, but it's always been thick since things settled down after my initial surgery. (It is also much less smelly since I went plant-based!)
I was interested to hear what you had to say about the ilium taking on the properties of the missing colon. I asked a stoma nurse about this once and she agreed that it might happen. I think it certainly has in my case, because of the thickness of my output. I haven't been able to find out much information but I'd be very interested to know if the gut microbiome, usually residing in the colon, migrates to the lower part of the ilium in ostomy patients? Do you have any opinion about this?
Do you have any advice on how to make your output less thick?
Keep up the good work - I love your videos!!

I wish there was a company who made an oral hydration solution that didn't contain Stevia, sucralose, or other types of artifical sweeteners. I've stuck with regular Gatorade because my kidneys don't like the artificial sweeteners. I'll have to try a couple of the recipes.

I can’t believe you are talking about dehydration as I have felt like I may have been a bit dehydrated during this heat wave. I realize I do not drink enough for sure!! I’m sure a lot of it is getting into the habit of just continuing to drink more throughout the day. I get busy and don’t think about drinking until I become very thirsty, exhausted and my legs begin to ache. I am truly making a conscious effort to always have water or any fluid by me at all times. Your video is so helpful and very informative as always.

Plain water wasn't cutting it because it just gave me horrible diarrhea... Using nuun helps me absorb my fluids so much better and helps my woozy feeling and high heart rate come down... Great choice... Thank you

I'm in West Virginia, with a j pouch, in a major Crohn's flair... and the humidity lately is just awful. Trying not to to drink enough, not faint or overheat is a full time job. Trying to have any sort of fun is overwhelming. Not being able to handle your symptoms without visiting the ER is awful.

This is the reason I am terrified of having this surgery. I practice positive thinking and 'you won't be able to absorb water' pops up in my mind. When I hear ‘ER bill’ it just makes me mad for people living in the USA. When you need the ER, the last thing on your mind should be whether you can afford it. In my country, we have compulsory health insurance (if you’re poor, the state helps you out with the costs) and when you go to the ER you don’t get a bill. Not even if you have the lowest insurance level.

I was a water-drinking rockstar! They documented my water intake (because they needed to refill my water). They started me with a hat in the toilet, but I ended up overfilling it more than once ... then I got rid of the hat and would just record the times on my whiteboard. If I dumped my pouch also, I would put an * beside the time.

Stupid question...do you have more fluid at night in your colostomy bag? I had mine in 2016. I thank God I was able to do a colostomy reversal. Same. Last time they scoped me, they made me do the "regular" colon prep, and I tried to insist I don't need that, because I don't have a colon, but she insisted back. I got so dehydrated, I nearly passed out in the shower, and then when I got to the endoscopy center, they couldn't find a vein. (I have good veins.) I'm foggy on what happened next, but three or four people later, someone finally got an IV going, and they had to rehydrate me before they could even do the procedure. Now I'm having trouble with my stomach, so I need an upper GI every few months, and they tell me not to drink past midnight, but I can't do that, or - no veins - dehydrated. So I found I can drink water up to about two hours before the upper GI, and still be good. Same thing with blood tests. "Nothing to eat or drink after midnight." If I do that - we're not going to get any blood. So I drink a full glass of water before I leave the house....
