    Of all the Bushcraft Channels on TH-cam, this one is becoming by far my favourite, mainly because I get to see someone work with an environment similar to the one I camp in (I live in Scotland), and I remember this thing that happened to me and I wonder if any other campers were struck with the same fate that befell me and my then girlfriend;
So basically, it was a really good and warm, sunny day. It had been for all week and forecasts had it going longer, we had the perfect time to camp at our spot. This was April 2010. (Some people probably already know where this is going)
So we're there, we've got our camp set up, fire going, wood collected and our sleeping area and shelter built. Didn't foresee any problems through the night.
Unbeknown to us however, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull had released a massive ash plume that brought with it a storm. We woke up at 6am to find that our entire camp was literally flooded that it was the water reaching our backs on our bed that woke us.
I bet your ass you've never seen a camp abandoned so fast in all your life, we ended up just tossing all our wools and letting nature reclaim them, it was like carrying chunks of steel so yeah, lost some good wools and some equipment that day :(

Two reasons why the forest might be warmer than the field. First, the trees create a shelter from cold winds which draw out heat from the environment. Second, the forest acts as one big "fire-reflector". Heat can be transported without mass (air) being involved, the effect is called "thermal radiation". Open fields just radiate their heat out into the atmosphere, while in a forest the radiation is reflected on every tree, keeping it inside the forest.

I find that a modest wooden fire reflector makes such a difference to fire efficiency in cold weather.
    So easy to make.

I love how he said. "Everyond might say im doing it wrong, or its wrong technique...but its right "For Me". I love that. Whatever works for you, works. As long as its not a danger to your life, do it the way you want. Use gear that works for you. I hate these guys who claim nothing works except the gear they have. Or their way is the only way. It arrogant.

    TA Outdoors:
The reason that it doesnt seem as hard of a frost in the deep woods with peaty soul is the heat created by decay. As the fallen leaves, twigs, various fungi, etc. decay it releases stored energy as heat. I am glad i got the chance to exchange knowledge with you. Happy camping.

So many people don't know that... Nice. It's also true and added to that there are the wind break properties of the trees to help cut down on chill factor.

The background noise was too loud to the point of distraction and if one has his own channel then invest in a popper stopper, manage a more remote mic and get a hands-free camera. There are people with good content that hide it by not using some fairly inexpensive equipment upgrades. Also, why can't TH-camrs watch and learn from TV and other YT success stories and copy what works well?

I would choose and Axe no doubt about that! If you get stuck in winter with only a knife you would freeze pretty quickly because you can't get enough fire Wood and it is not very likely that you stay in your survival Situation for so long that you have to prepare game. I use my Gransfors Outdoor axe for more than two years now and it's light enough to do feathersticks and carving. I even use it for outdoor cooking, but I can still chop down a tree with it. Once we had to fell a 15 year old tree in the garden which was about 12 inches in Diameter and this was no Problem at all for the Outdoor axe...

Regarding your cooking you would have been better to heat a large rock at the edge of the fire, assuming you can find one and cooking on that. Rock offers a much more even heat and is less likely to burn your food ie that sausage lol. btw, I would go the Axe given it takes much less effort and energy to cut up wood for fires and everything else, yes not so easy to skin animals but this depends on the design and sharpness of the chosen axe.

It's about 4°C colder outside the city than in it, but all organisms dissipate a little heat while living, including fungi and trees. Since the organisms in a dense forest are more abundant and bigger, they dissipate more heat than the grasses on an open field, which also has more loss of heat through convection (which is why i.e. a ramp to the highway often freezes before the highway itself, even with no traffic (which generates a little heat again)).

Canada here. -4? That's Spring to us. Also, I've seen a sheltered garden that used the trapped heat of the unfrozen ground to keep the winter greens and veggies from freezing. They dug in the earth a foot or so, and I think they used large barrels of water to trap more energy. The point is that the ground may be damp, but it is warmer then the air, and will help regulate the air inside the shelter the closer you are to the ground.

    mike:
if u are having trouble pouring from your billy can, I always find it easier to pour along the axis of the handle, eliminating the need for a stick. since the handle does not pivot in that direction, the can tips easily. Of course, this only works if u only have water in the can; otherwise your handle will become dirty.

The reason the frost is less in the woods versus in the fields is that the trees, especially coniferous trees are dark in color and gain heat during the day. Even though it does not seem like it when you are in the woods it is actually a little bit warmer then out in the open and the trees gain enough heat during the day radiate just enough to not get frost in the trees. The fields dont gain enough heat during the day and dont have enough mass to offset the moisture turning to frost. Hope that makes sense.

  • @mistygroves3503

My theory about why the frost is less in the woods is because maybe the trees hold some warmth in the wood. I live near 5 really big Oaks and on a bitter cold night when I pass by them it is a tiny bit warmer. Some fried onions and tomatoes would have been magic on that sausage bap! haha

Your question about the woodlands not getting as cold is about thermodynamics. The fact that when it changes in temperature, the thicker the woodland, the more resistant to temperature changes it is, and it acts as bit of a thermal heat zone. Likewise, it takes much longer to warm up the woods after it has been cold for a good amount of time. Axe vs knife, I would want a larger knife that can be used with a batten to chop larger trees down but can do so many different duties. I really enjoy your videos, even though my Midwest U.S. ears don't always understand the English accent! Lol...

When I watch these videos, I kind of feel like I am there enjoying the fire etc myself. I love watching your videos very much. I am from Australia and found these kinds of videos on you tube by accident. I was most impressed by the ones you make. My first camping experience was when I was in the U.S in Tennessee and will be going back there and doing another camping experience. I am not young and realize that I have missed out on a lot by not camping until I got old but they say it is never too late to go and love it. I love watching how you make things and am hoping some of the information and ideas will stick in my head. Thank you for all that you share and I cannot wait to see more shelters and camps etc.

The average age in which they die is very different to average lifespan for example Australian aboriginals on average die 10 years earlier than everyone else in Australia. You were talking about the MEAN (average) number which takes all the numbers and divides them by two to give you the mean (average). very different statistics.

    • @takix2007
      @takix2007 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Nope, you're the one mistaken. Mean and average are synonymous : sum up all the numbers and divide that sum by the number of participants (that average age of death might not be the age at which anyone died). The notion you're refering to is a median, that is, the number that splits your collection into two equal bunches (the median is always the actual age of death of someone in the considered population). But you are right in the fact that these two notions are usually two different figures.

Beelzebub is an American Imperial Stout. The intensely smooth and rich roasted flavor is complemented by the unmistakable presence of hops. The bitterness is held in check, preserving the flavors of dark chocolate. This ale is aggressively dry hopped with Citra to cut through it all. PRETTY DAMN GOOD STOUT BEER AT 13.5% alcohol!

Honestly a machete seems like a good mix if both. You can bring a tree down and split it but also be able to fillet a fish.
Of and "Weihenstefaner" brand name 'Vitus' is a strong and very tasty German beer. It is 7.4% alc. I believe!

the decomposing,(rotting) of the vegation in the woods creates warmth, may only be a few degrees warmer but it makes a difrence, also the tree cover holds in the heat radiating from the earth more then out in the clear

and id rather a knife over an axe, the knife is a much more "all around" tool then an axe

when i could only choose one i would take an axe couse you can use it both way. In case of making firewood you can cut down the trees and then split the wood and if you need to and have a good axe you can also make featherstics. So when you have a knive you can make featherstics but actually nothing else like cuting down trees

In response to why it frosts less under trees, that is due to tree canopies trapping heat below them which creates a warmer environment than an area with no cover.

Love the theory time. The Wind outside the forest is just a little stronger and therefore temps drop greater creating harder frosts. Statistics are evil, averaging means semi-lying about semi-truths. And definitely and ax. Keep it up.

I know it's a bit late, but I love ales with a tale haha,. I'd take a tomahawk over a knife, or interestingly, a billhook, they split wood well, clear undergrowth and you can dig with the outer edge of it.

Absolutely lovely video. Your sense of humour is great; your cooking is fabulous, and your videos just make me realize that we should all make time for the simpler things in life. I think natural wood smoke is far less dangerous than the chemical-laden smoke of cigarettes, but I still think your theory may hold up...a bit. All that smoke can't be good for you, can it? You have solved a great mystery of The Human Experience! Well done! Thanks again for another relaxing video. I feel as though I had an overnight camping trip too!

Your best video yet. I have a suggestion for a future video. Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that camping and fire lighting is permitted on a lot of coastal land in the UK. Why not kill two birds with one stone and do a tarp bushcraft video, utilising your fishing knowledge. You could also put a video up on TAFishing on survival fishing. MCQ Bushcraft used a very effective method. You should check it out in his coastal bushcraft video if you haven't already. Keep your excellent videos up.

    Hey,
in the Netherlands we also use emergency covers, but usually they have a gold lace and a silver lace. that is why we always say gold is cold.
which means that when it is cold you have to do the golden side to the body.
I hope you have something to do with this tip.
    greetings from the Netherlands (Drenthe).
    my favorit beer is Grolsch
