    It's disappointing that they didn't mention the most important improvement. None of the PCC cars that were manufactured had air conditioning, which would have been brutal in Texas. These rebuilt cars have air conditioning that you can see on the top. It would also be incorrect to call them trolleys because the trolley pole has been replaced by a pantograph.

    I dont think America understands how streetcars really work. In order to work, it needs to have city wide coverage like in Prague

    • @travelsofmunch1476
      @travelsofmunch1476 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Enmity the Kindhearted They already have that tho. 25 lines throughout the city, over 300 million in ridership ever year and an actually good system. The El Paso Streetcar is a next to useless tourist trap. Many American cities have built singular streetcar lines or loops downtown but they miss the mark. Look up the Prauge Streetcar system and you'll understand why having a system is important

    Looking at one of the photographs! on frame 0:36 it claims that the last streetcars in use made their final trip at 6 PM September 4th 1974.
    But then what explains the El Paso County Detention Center and the El Paso Natural Gas new addition built in the early 1980's?
    As both newest building additions to the downtown skyline are visible.There were some streetcars stored inside an old El Paso City Lines barn back in the 1970's.
    The story is confusing!

    Congratulations, El Paso on bringing back your streetcar!
    I wish I could say the same for San Antonio, but I can't. S.A. is way behind the curve when it comes to diversifying mass transit. 🙄

    It Was TexDOT Chairman, Ted Houghton and not city rep, Peter Svarzbein that was instrumental!
    In securing $95 million dollars for the El Paso Streetcar restoration among having San Francisco.
    MUNI Surveyors come to El Paso to do their analysis study's to bring back the electric streetcars.
    And so Five years later!

    does Sunmetro read this stuff? here's the problem: back in the normal days. Mesa Brio morning busses were stuffed with people going to medical appts and students going to UTEP - but the streetcars don't even start until 11am! And as far as "historical" goes -- i don't remember FREE WI-FI in the old days.

      Then again, I don't live down there so IDK really know much about the operating schedule but I know a lot of systems have taken a hit post covid. Now if this was an issue pre pandemic, then yeah that's a big problem.

    • @serenityrahn5656
      @serenityrahn5656 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blue9multimediagroup - it was an issue pre-pandemic too. That's partly why this is so confusing. City spent millions installing track, refurbishing the original streetcars, big ad campaign - to end up with bond debt and super-low ridership. Weird schedule is at least partly to blame.

    Too bad ridership is practically zero. I always see two or three people and sometimes no one is riding. Doesn’t seem to have been a worthwhile 1 billion dollar expenditure. Money should have been used to computerize traffic lights. When driving in EP just about every traffic signal drivers is red so citizens waste time and gas

    I love public transit but this is a complete failure. The El Paso streetcar only gets 3000 riders per month (yes, you read that right) and is currently only operating 21 hours per week. It cost 97 million dollars to build this. Would have been much better to spend that on an expansive and frequent bus rapid transit network, improved sidewalks and bike lanes, and ADA improvements to the transportation network.

  • @davidgeorge000

    Biggest waste of public funds ever. What a joke, no one rides them. The cars are empty! The only one on these things is the driver. Massive waste if money. Good call Sunmetro. How long until they get shut down? They need to admit it was a failed project and they need to cut their losses now. It's bleeding money! The waste if money is staggering. You just can't get the stupid libs to admit fault, cut the losses and move on.

      it was state money, and riders is only one of its purposes. It brings in HUGE investment dollars. Ridership is increasing as well. And those stupid libs run Dallas, Houston, Austin and El Paso so the stupid libs are what make texas great, not the trump people that will die out in 20 years
