Odyssey: Iceland's Midnight Sun in 4K

- The light during midnight sun in Iceland is a surreal and unforgettable experience. Hues of pinks, purples, reds and oranges that you may be lucky to see for a few minutes during a normal sunrise/sunset can explode for hours in an epic display of nature's masterful artistry.
Shot over two weeks from late June through early July in Iceland, finding the best spots to experience these conditions was not easy. We had to navigate Iceland's fickle weather. The southern half of the island was storming most of the time. Knowledge of the island's various micro climates and scenic locations were important in figuring out where to go for any given night. So was staying mobile and keeping all options open. Each day was a new and unexpected adventure.
Over the course of the trip, we covered most of Iceland's varied landscapes, traveling a complete loop on the ring road as well as spending time in the central highlands in the middle of the island.
You'll see scenes from Snaefellsnes peninsula in the west and various mountains and coastal areas in the north, to the fjords in the east and the Vatnajökull glacier region in the south. Perhaps the most unexpected of all was catching the large plumes of clouds being generated by the cooling lava from last year's volcanic eruption in Bárðarbunga.
In the end, the odyssey is about the journey and its experiences rather than about the destination.

+Aaron Palabyab My reaction too. Red cloud so sun either already down or not yet up. Earth in shadow but it doesn`t matter if you have a camera with huge dynamic range. The shot actually makes me rethink what the most attractive landscape light really is.

That's so beautiful! There are different things to see at slow speed that don't make themselves apparent at normal speed. These are gorgeously lit and composed, and have a drama all their own as they evolve.

What we see in the nature, is the dance of the nature. Do you usually watch a ballet 10 times or only two times faster? Do you listen to music two times faster? I'm waiting for the original clips, because I don't like it. Especially the water falls.
+Kristóf Fogolyán You miss the point of timelapse, which is to bend time so we are able to perceive changes and movements in nature that we normally cannot see. Many aspects of the Earth, and the Universe at large, operate at a much grander scale. We humans can only perceive changes that happen in seconds but not slow changes that take minutes, hours or days. With timelapse you have a whole new way of seeing the world. You are able to see patterns and transformations the human eye normally cannot detect. The waterfall wasn't just about the waterfall but the entire scene: especially the lenticular clouds which when seen in real time would look still, and also the moving mist. This is why I love shooting timelapse -- oftentimes even I can't predict everything happening in a scene until I actually process it. It's a great way to learn about the rhythms of nature.
