Jesse, next time you're in town, grab a tube of Plumbers GOOP. It is the best sealant for all threaded fittings. Apply Teflon, squeeze a bead of GOOP onto the threads and smear it around evenly. When the fitting is fully seated, use your finger to swipe excess away, and it will self-level. I've been using it for over 20yrs in the pool industry, and have found it to be amazing. (It's called Amazing GOOP. lulz) It makes future maintenance a breeze, and cleans up really well.
Plan TODAY for maintenance and repair access. After things are built is absolutely the worst time to find out you can't get to stuff to fix it. Leaving room in your conduits for extra wires, leaving a pulling line in there to pull new wires: SMART. Adding quick connects to your plumbing and valves so you can get things apart when needed: SMART.
Suggestion: a simple little thermostat and a 10-watt light bulb inside your insulated box to keep the pump and filter from freezing. Light bulb on at 40 degrees, off at 60. A simple snap-action stat is all you need, cheap and reliable.
I've built many homes and I could never get the roof sheathed and dried in fast enough, that was always the number one priority.
Tip with hole saws is drill from one side then once the tip pokes through.... flip sides and drill from the other side stops tear out.
Btw well done on all the progress, stay strong and ignore all the haters
You guys did it. You will love that hot tub. Had one once out of the wood, and it's nice and very warm....just fabulous! Great work! Stainless steel screws---no rust.
Stainless Steel screws inside (under water) the tub ? If the filter turns red/brown, Rust from standard steel screws.
Glad to see you guys are enjoying life not just living to work... Be safe and take care of each other...
You should plant fruit trees this spring. They take 5 years to bear fruit. Don’t wait till you think you are ready. Do it now. Apples. Pears. Cherrys. Plums. Plant plenty. Then just cut the few you put in a wrong place down. Make an orchard. You will appreciate the fruit, but most of all the blossoming spring and the shade in summer. Don’t wait. This spring folks. Btw. Like your channel a lot. Greetings from Denmark. 😊👍
I know you will hate me, but if you put the shutoff valve inside the tub then you can disconnect the filter/pump and have a dry drain which won't freeze. I am sure you can rig a tool to operate it from above water. Cap the overflow from the inside, the fitting will freeze otherwise.
In the Summer, used a small 12vdc bilge pump with a couple hundred feet of black 3/4" poly pipe on the ground in the sun to heat my wooden hot tub in the PNW. Worked good with a 12vdc solar panel, just a thought...
How about putting the filter and pump inside the tub instead of outside in the freezing cold air? Just a thought...
Why was you turning the nut on the bulkhead fittings @ 10:18 and 10:21 anti-clockwise?
Like someone said below, put an elbow in that top bulkhead fitting, pointing down. It will keep the splash down. Don't worry about plugging the top fitting. It is above water level anyway >Someone else said to put an elbow in the bottom fitting pointing up. Then screw in a 3-foot length of PVC in the winter. That way you can also drain the ball valve to prevent it from freezing. >Just disconnect the pump and drain it when not in use. >I like someone else's idea of using long lengths of black poly hose as a solar water heater. My uncle use 200' of garden hose for hot showers at his homestead many decades ago. Thanks for the video. Jon
Once you get your "box" for the filtration system, you would only need a incandescent light bulb for the heat source. I used a 75 watt one to heat a 5'x4'x2' well house in NY nothing ever froze.
I owned a lawn irrigation company. And in the winter we emptied all water lines with an air hose to protect the water lines from freezing.
Cool thing with videoing things you can review how you took it apart. I do alot of photos when replacing components on high power parts of HVAC equipment. 440 volt stuff is nothing to misswire. Great vid. Use mullen heaters with temp sensor. A refrigerator has those components. You could get the parts out of an old self defrost refrigerator. Use bubble wrap with mylar on both sides. Roofing materials. Strips and wrap. That will have about R19 factor if not crushed too much.
Dumb suggestion... Use your solar panels to heat a low wattage DC water heating element in the hot tub to keep it from freezing?
Would a fire place grate at the bottom of the burner box reduce the risk of the bottom eventually burning out?
Nice to see the tub back on line. Suggestions for you if your going to introduce a filtration system for that puppy. Variable speed pump, much larger filter than you think you need ( I would recommend a plm300. Bigger filter means less filter cleaning and wear on your pump.), 1 1/2” - 2” plumbing, and an in-line sanitizer ( longer span between water changes). Just some food for thought! Cheers!
If you plug it from the inside the water won't be able to get into that fitting, just an idea but I think it'd help so you don't have to worry about it freezing
I've been in stock tank hot tubs that worked out very well.
So...did the hot tub heat up faster now that you relocated the wood heater???
Glad that polar bear is finally earning his keep. Enjoy the hot tub.
No caulk around the bulkhead fittings? Looked like a loose fit, and pressure fit seal is iffy.
Just a suggestion for you guys when you go on grid, you should utilize your solar pannels for you hot tub. You could run an element in it to help keep it above freezing temp like a cattel waterer does. Keep up the good vids guys!
Just a thought about the freezing problem with the spa. Pool salt is a relatively inexpensive solution to reduce the freezing point of water. Not sure where you are located but you can reduce the freeze point to well below zero degrees F. I believe the maximum saturation point of salt would take it to around -20F but with some experimentation with a 5 gal bucket, you could determine how much salt you’d need for the spa volume of water and determine if it’s feasible for your climate. Good luck.
cool shot inside the burn chamber!
Since the snows came, all my wife can do is look through the window. If it gets worse, I'll have to let her in!
At 10:30min You got all of your Crosby clips on your hot tub cables backwards. You want to always assemble them the opposite way from which they are now for best practice, safety and effectiveness.
"Never saddle a dead horse".....I saw that too but decided, hey, it's a hot tub not a 5 ton piece of steel.
You should check into what's called a taco pump way more efficient than a water pump and would circulate water for you guys and I believe you can get one in 12 volt or 24
Left hand threads on plumbing fittings? You'll find that external pipework and filters attract the most damage from frost. 'Spose you can get a mains electric heater on a frost stat when the wires arrive.
UK canal boat dwellers find mains electricity about 20% of the cost of home (petrol) generated electricity, or you need 10times your summer load worth of panels to keep up with winter demand and reduced solar generation. However the further in miles you get from the mains the more risk there is of power outages due to cable damage (etc) SO some home generation facility will always help. -Make sure that your mains/generator switchover is to code.
you know if you use those pliers in the other direction you can apply more torque.
Jess your Crosby clamps are backwards on cables on tub
Love the energy you both convey. It's like you guys are revisiting the start of your accomplishments (1st project) on the property so far. 2018, I'm sure , will show several accomplishments as you move forward Keep Rockin!!
At some point when the house is done I'd make a patio or deck behind the house and move the hot tub closer to the house??
Just a ?....I love the traditional hot tub..but how do you sanitize the water?
Did you notice the sharp point on the metal cover? If you haven't already been cut, maybe take a closer look at the potential hazard.
Cap the inside. If the water spills in from the inside of the tub it will crack the fixture.
Building that hot tub before so many other things was a stroke of genius. Great forethought and understanding the importance of relaxing now and again after working very hard day in and day out. Nice job!
Your top fitting put the plug on the inside, if you put it on the outside the fitting can hold water and suffer water/freeze damage. Looking good and I am sure it felt wonderful.
The Bulkhead Fitting is Left Hand Thread so it tightens up when you add other fitting to it
It might seem obvious but take the red handle off and duck tape it to the inside of the frost protector :-) bright idea from the swiss alps :-)
Styrofoam rose cone used to protect roses from freezing.....
Just curious... why did you put the fire box inside the tub? Since you have a filtration system, a fire box outside of the tub could be made to work and you would have more room in the tub.
Robert Promm It's aluminum. If they don't have direct heat exchange, it would melt into a little pile of slag
Why didn't you line the inside of that sucker with Tyvek?
You can also turn the overflow elbow upright to max out how high the water level can rise before it overflows
That ball valve will freeze and crack pretty easily.
Use a gate valve
kerryithm2 - a ball valve has a hole in the center of it, when closed that hole is full of water, when frozen the ball breaks and yes, it leaks.
The gate valve can freeze and not brake in most applications.
And yes corossion happens to most valves over time
I say build a small enclosure for the pump and filter. Something you can put drinks, snacks and your towels on.
I would cap the inside so no water stays in there. Maybe that little water can't crack it and I'm overthinking it
My fam is from that area.... I'm in ALABAMA but my blood moved west....beautiful country out there
hay guys great video but start using those channelocks in the right direction they work so much easier.
you have solar, build some basic 12volt lighting for your Jacuzzi so you don't need led's strapped to your heads, something outside with remote switch and possible 1 or 2 small LED pool lights.. easy to install and makes the water experience better
isn't that tub all slimey and slippery by now ?? wood looks good when new ... but seeing this ...think stock tank makes more sense!
Warning! Safety Tip: Not to "pile on" or anything like that but at 10:30, there's an old saying that "you should never saddle a dead horse" that applies to that/those U-bolt cable clamps for the hot tub cinching cables as well as for other applications. I'll let the Channel Locks thing slide.
Solar power, for fish tank heater in hot tub. Keep it above freezing. Might have to add water more often but cut down heating time.
Hey guys...
A note to say thank you for your efforts and sharing.
I would like to offer some innovations for your hot tub situation, for your specific area.
I know that water is an issue (considering you don't have running surface water). so some of these may not be the best for your situation.
Insulate...
OVER Insulate... it is such a small area, R50 wouldn't be overkill.
But before you do that, shave down a 2 or 3 foot section of the top of the hot tub, about a half inch or so... You may need to experiment...
This is so you can fill the tub so the filters and stove work correctly, but when you get in, you control where the overflow goes... With some creativity you can even make that a feature.
If the pump can handle it, you may even collect that water under the structure and use the pump to return it to the top.
(think aquarium...) Box the pump and filter with over insulation too.
Alteratively, put that box right on the side where the stove is... Maybe hide it as a seat.
Alter the input plumbing so that with the flick of a lever you can refill overflow.
Be aware that with an insulated hottub with a woodstove, you could make soup, it can get REALLY hot... Might actually be useful at times... 300 gallons of hot water to play with?
Just some thoughts.
Always plug from the inside when possible, no standing water from oversplash to freeze in the fitting.
Less Jessie, more Alissa, less bungholes!
That projecting pointed edge on the aluminum cover plate looks like a lethal accident waiting to happen!
Now you can run a freeze guard to help prevent disaster.
The guy was crying in his beer and his friend asked, "What's the problem?"
The guy said, "I found my girlfriend's name in the snow."
The guy said, "I wouldn't worry about it."
The guy said, "It was her handwriting!"
Hey just a thought for your hot tubs lower valve thermal protection. get a party store Styrofoam ice cooler. you can match the curve of the tub. a simple bungee to the valve to hold in place. cost what $3.00 at the party store.
I keep picturing that sharp overhanging metal edge of the cover ripping into flesh. Please cover it with some foam or something for your protection.
One of life's pleasures
I thought a stock tank jacuzzi would be the jam!
did it leak? did it get hot?
Great update. No gasket necessary?
I like the new robes team!!! I'm glad you're getting a bit ahead on projects and are able to work on smaller stuff, like the hot tub!
Enjoy! Is that a Christmas tree plantation across the way at 11:48?
What about the house construction ?
When you say “special order” is that a custom one-off made just for you? Or was it straight off a website? I special order items off the inter-webs all the time.
YIKES 8:36 Stabbing hazard right there !
why didnt you round off that point on that metal cover!?
If you take the handle off the ball valve the foam protector should fit over the bottom bulkhead fitting :)
a timer on the fill hose..enjoy
use the solar as a heater for the pumps for the hot tub
Why not use the bottom drain used for the recyling of the water. You would be pulling warm water with dirt to the filter and it would help with heating the filter element.
Cody over at Wranglerstar has you back, He made a video about what a Modern Homesteader is
Is it me or do your fittings have left hand threads ? ,!!
John Chapman I think that might have to do with mirror image problem I have been noticing in some videos, but I could be wrong. You might have noticed backwards lettering sometimes.
No, those are actual left hand threads on the outside of the bulkheads. It's made that way so when you tighten the pipe fitting on the inside it also tightens the bulkhead.
No mirroring, it seems to be left hand thread.
Did those bungs have reverse threads?
Hi nice tub, why does the bulkhead fitting have a left hand thread
Way to go you two! And just in case you wonder...YES, yall are inspiriing and are sincerely appreciated. Thanks!
I love how they make all the mistakes and save me tons of money :)
Hmm....something along the lines of a fish tank heater (but larger) powered by solar to keep it warm(er) constantly
Is the image flipped or are they left hand thread
I love what you guys are doing.. My wife now has this fear of.. I'm going to move here & my son out some remote place with a wood burner, and not power or hot water, you guys are doing great things, i am so tired of hearing some on channels piggy backing on things you guys have to comment, i have seen prob everything you guys have out, if I've missed 10 things you've put out it's doubtful. You have a great dream building.. My wife is learning more about your channel, she asked about you having she said a 2nd cat not shown anymore..? Thanks guys..!
They lost 1 kitty to an illness. So they only have 1 now.
Have you thought about making a diy aquarium vacuum so that draining is not as necessary just a thought
Cap inside if water rise some water may go inside that small pipe and while most will leave it does curve so some may still be inside
What other platforms can we watch you on besides TH-cam?
????? How come you haven't used any sealant?
Is there a soft washer on the inside at least?
Have I missed something?
Mind you, I don't blame you in the slightest for getting the tub ready..
I can't think of anything better after a hard days work.
Bravo !
...
Chris England - Same reason no sealant is used to manufacture a wooden barrel used to age wine or spirits in. The wood swells and will form a perfectly good seal without the need for sealant. I think they did install a rubber seal on the inside of the fitting. Cheers.
Yes the bulkhead fittings come with a rubber to seal the inside surface
Is there a link to the music of this video, it's so cool.
You two are doing great! Been watching off and on but now I subscribed. Just block the haters, trolls and other scum and keep on keeping on. Just "Hike Your Own Hike" and let "Satan be gone"!
my parents get their medicines in a foam box. you could probably find something at a mail store or fed X or ups their box is about 1 1/2 inches thick.
Can you put a street elbow on the inside lower bulkhead turned up the cut a length of pvc pipe that you can thread on long enough that it sticks out of the water open the lower drain valve so that it has no water, take it out in the summer ...
I was going to say something about the improper way Jesse has the Channellocks placed on the fitting at 10:20, and that he should have flipped them over to tighten the fitting, but I think I will remain silent this time.( Said in jest, but nevertheless true)
You will probably have to cut firewood , don’t think u have any ? Lol
You make me want to go to some wellness centre. :)
Put sea salt or Kosher salt in to prevent freezing
Fence-y boards? Sound like me. Glad y'all got your hot tub back. Know y'all enjoy it.
if you cap the outside it could freeze you know you can put solar panels on your roof to help the cost of the power and the government can help with the cost right now
You should build a sauna, when time allows.
