- A high-speed crash involving a Porsche driven by a drunk minor in Pune, has reignited discussions on the influence of power and privilege in law enforcement. This tragic incident that killed two young people, calls for a closer examination of the dynamics between wealth, influence, and adherence to legal regulations. Karanjeet Kaur, journalist and former editor, Arré, argues in this column.

For middle class if pollution certificate is not there for vehicle .we will be fined for 10000.Our Judiciary system is corrupted.
yes been through it jus for 30ml i was made to go through dates and pay heavy fine.. that too din harm anyone.
What is new in this? You delay your EMI payment by 1 month and gundas reach your door step. But if you are Mallya or Choksi or share the last name of a vishwguru, then you can leave the country and enjoy life and privileges and live harmoniously saying sab changa si
Piss on the judiciary system
I see the victims names mentioned everywhere yet the culprit keeps being referred to as a "17 year old juvenile". Such irony.
His name is also shown at many places... Vedant Agarwal
Also, till he is convicted - he remains an accused where as regardless of the verdict Aneesh and Ashwini will remain as deceased victims in the records. Hence the dilemma regarding naming him. Many have named him but the protocol per law is to name them only after conviction. As far as victims are concerned - there is no such protocol unless they stand to get defamed, embarrassed or ridiculed e.g. in case of molestation or rape.
@@user_1abc he has already been convicted.
Then asked to write a love letter to the judge.
@@hs6736 He hasn't been convicted, just being prosecuted. Rub your bish somewhere else.
Law prohibits disclosing names of juvenile accused.
Human life is cheap in India. The poorer the person, the cheaper the life. Vishwaguru?
Vishwaguru is a joke
Get lost you stupid congressi😂
Ghanta Vishwaguru , ye desh rehne layak tkk nhi hai
She puts things fearlessly. Great applause
It was already known by whole India
The tragedy has shown that even the law ,powerful officers and judges kneels down before money and are all powerless before money.
That corrupt judge should be raided and put in jail.
I would urge the Government to enact a law which allows traffic police to CONFISCATE the mobile phones of those found talking on their mobile while driving.
In this case, the accused person used mobile while hitting the victims?
@@cochinlab I’m not talking about this case. All Individuals caught driving while talking should have their mobiles confiscated
Whenever govt tries to bring strict laws, we are the same people including opposition oppose it by sharing fake propaganda. What happened to hit and run law that was brought by central govt recently? All states and including opposition opposed it because truck drivers doesn’t want it.
As a person from Pune, I live nearby the accident spot and have so so many times travelled by that road as my friend used to live there. I usually used to travel on weekends and return by 1 or 2 am. Scares the sh*t out of me what if I someone had hit me like this??
Pune's driving culture is the worst in MH. No one follows any traffic signal.
Pune roads are flooded by many errant drivers who are either village goons or high profile juveniles. They have scant respect for law as they wield big clout with the politicians and the police. They do not stop at signals and often drive on the wrong side of the road.
I am a punekar. I can confirm that nobody in pune, and indeed entire India ( except NE state's) has any discipline or traffic sense. The only rule to follow, is to break all rules. This case is getting a lot of attention because of the car being driven, and the fact that the driver was a rich kid.
But what about the fact that most people in pune refuse to wear helmets? Despite the fact that pune has the 2nd largest no of 2 wheelers in any city, after Delhi, a much bigger city. So our entire society is f×××d up. Not just the rich and powerful.
The judiciary system has now became neked. You can purchase the judgement of you have money.
What do you mean "now become naked"? When was it clothed? Justice is for rich, law if for poor - that's the norm.. that's the fundamental nature of our world.. this is how the world has been.. before NDA, before UPA, Before independence, before British, before Mughals, before Sultanate, before Harshavardhan, before Gupta Empire, before Mauryas, before Alexander, before Buddha, before Parshwanath, before Krishna, before Ram, before Mahabali, before hiranyakashyap, before very first Chakravarti.
In fact this norm is the very basis how Brahma created the universe. First sound in the universe was not "Om".. it was "bhrashtachar"
The court is become a house of pro***tes. We should stop calling it Hon'ble High court or any terms that glorify it
Isnt it the case in every walk of our life as Indians. Law and rules do not apply to rich and powerful in India.
If you’re rich in India everything is your “slave” significantly (legislature, executive, judiciary and media)
i.e: Vijay Mallya, Neerav Modi and Lalit Modi and so on
Its high time we shud question the credibility & accountability of judiciary/judges also. This is one of many incidents of court passing infuriating court orders regarding heinous crimes. Last week they released Kejriwal and this week they released this rash driver Agrawal. Both are highly dangerous judgements. How can court be so partial & biased and release a criminal just bcoz he wants to campaign for election. How can they release a rash driver by asking him to write just an essay for k!||ing 2 ppl on road? This is highly frustrating. This raises serious questions on credibility of judges.😡😡😡😡😡😡
Modern India's judiciary has lost its credibility long time back for which everyone is accountable including you and me. There's no practical mechanisms in place in India to pull the plug on judges and this alone gives them the audacity to do anything and everything making mockery of the justice system of the world's largest democracy. An HC/SC judge can only be impeached by the parliament. What will a citizen of this country do if judges are involved in wrongdoing? Judicial corruption is an inescapable reality in India. High time to have a mechanism where judges can be brought to the book. Rest in Fridge Judiciary!!
Yes even amith shah case was closed after BJP came in 2014
@@sanjeevkumarc3686 Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi's case was closed. Robert Vadra's case was closed.
One interesting thing - the name of the judge never came up. He has not been interviewed. No one in the judiciary has been questioned. Which is why this would happen again. As long as someone is beyond reproach, she can do anything
There are many people involved in this decision. The JJC has social workers too who operate like a jury. The final responsibility is with the judge. But the entire system is rotten to the core.
I got electeocuted after falling into a loose top cover manhole which was a pedestrain path, i was literally walking on the foothpath. Near death experience and i totally lose hope for india and the quality of public safety standards we set for 1/6 of the worlds population
Wow what a hard hitting honest and critical look at the Indian society. Kudos 👏
We need to stop blaming the police .. if you want police to stop this .. they have to be everywhere .. and then we will complain about a Police state .. with its consequences. It's the judiciary that is to blame here .. after all the boy was appropriately arrested by the Police. .. who cannot mete out justice ... so why blame them. Please be honest and factual .. rather than a hyperbolic reaction that only leads to riots and more damage .. and encourages politicians
If we don't talk about what we see is corrupt the politicians will continue collecting their salaries and be smug about their positions
Well written and well articulated article. However, the sad truth is, as a politician once said : "Any news fades away from public memory after 7 days!" So will this one too. Unfortunate in the world's 4th largest economy
Thats how humans are made unfortunately. Forget, forgive and move on.
The Pune Police must be taken to task immediately to instill confidence of the people of Mahabharata in Police. There was serious erosion of credibility of the Police during MVA regime. Now is the time to restore it.
That was due to court/juvenile justice board passing infuriating bail condition & in within 15 hrs.
@@YourAgn That murderer was served pizza in the police station
@@TheKakarot_itachi Yes that is also wrong.
This is all results of not arresting the then DGP of Mumbai in MVA regime and subsequently owner ED for clear-cut involvement in extortion money racket with the actively hand of Sachin Waze
Media should also highlight role of judge of the juvenile justice board judge and bring them to justice.
Modi has already told that India will be for the wealth creators and we have become developed nation by 2047...so money is now everything...so don't complaint if the poor getting died...
This Accident exposes the new MODI CULTURE of Indian Capitalist society where money is everything and public servants are scared. . No, Modi... India is still backward
@@skarr7985It's not about Godi v.s Khangress ! Both are 💩
But about true, real, sensefull development of India in all of its aspects. Social issues in India are still today too huge for making India a truly "emerging" country. Social indicators in India are lagging behind even Brasil and more close to those of the Subsaharan African countries which are dirt poor.
How would you feel if one of your family members was killed in this way? Are poor people not human beings?
This shows why moral science classes in schools are strongly needed. We need firstly a change in edcuation system
Moral values need to be at home! By a loving father and mother.
@@MariaSingh-iv4svMoral values taught both by parents and teachers.
Good coverage but lets stick to drunk driving and how the elites can escape punishment for severe crimes while average person is harassed for nothingburgers.
No point strecthing to other topics such as deaths in sewers, death by public transportation, etc. They can be covered in a different piece.
Agreed! If we generalise nothing will get solved and this will shortly turn into BJP vs Congress supporters and the accused will laugh away.
Agreed. More importantly, showing just BJP's logo & emblem won't solve this problem. Everyone is corrupt & the judicial system itself needs to change.
Why Not? It's a system failure for every neglected govt structure!
@@Uncool-vn5vz Very cleverly one political party was shown in the Video. They should say that the system is corrupted. Correcting the System is the responsibility of each citizen.
And this prejudice from journalists washes away the seriousness of the issue at hand.
As far as the serving of liquor to underaged people is concerned, no bar in the country would be abiding by that policy.
Go to any bar/pubs, there are plenty of underaged people sitting in each other's laps and making out while drinking and smoking. Not even a single bar checks any age proof. Nowhere.
Precious lives lost families destroyed for ever and law of the land is a joke..
There's so much uncertainty about the speed at which the car was being driven. Some channels saying 200km/hr some saying 220kmph.. this woman saying 160!
Although that doesn't matter, car was being driven too rashly and two people lost their lives as a result of that...but still..
Indian police and judicial system feels like a joke😢
To the crew at ThePrint: Can you please change the title of this video to not use the word "accident" and instead label it a "crash" like you've done correctly in the video description? This was not accident and the words we use to label incidents matter. Thank you for your work!
Nobody is talking about system near school kalyani nagar has Tonique and liv mansion wine shop mall and 14 to 15 pubs operating upto 4 in the morning
But which school is operating during those hours, doesnt make sense. Most pubs are in business only during the evening when students have aldready gone home.
A drivers competence is not established by the type of vehicle he drives, but by his ability to keep safe;
himself, the vehicle he drives, his co-passengers, pedestrians on the road, public/private properties and other road users.
Change Ur Style.... to keep yourself & others safe.
Ma’am. You hit the nail on the head. More and more a lot of us feel like we are treated less as citizens and more as mere statistics.
The kid has to own up to his actions, its for his good only. He knows the results of intoxications, effects of driving under influence, still he did it.
True...If you are a powerful and rich, influence person then...Law is just an option !!!
Perfect analysis far more accurate than other media reports
Largest Democracy where human life are belittled than any...
not a child just a rich brat . 15 days work with traffic and write and essay will this give back two life . Nothing will happen 2 LAW FOR TWO CLASS . Even in the state like kerala nothing happen fews months before in pala .
A well balanced exposition of the real truth. Thanks. Dr Barnabas mathe, Kerala.
Ayase hi chalta aa raha hain...

The judges need to be prosecuted as they did not give value to the lives of victims and failed to understand the seriousness of the issue. They thought its an every day case where they can take bribe and give judgement.
Thanks to the Print for this information.
The court must & should give capital punishment then only things will come to order
Very good video. However there was no need to guilt trip people for outraging in some cases but not others. It's always true for everyone that empathy is not equal in all cases.
Very disturbing trend and very true. It's not just one person but the apathy of the government in all sectors. Hence ppl are so keen on going abroad for a better quality of life. Apt wording "systemic negligence."
One day it might be us on that road , that night
Karanjeet, it took one more accident to motivate you to make this video as this incident make for a juicy headline. How long will you follow up on this serious issue?
Price for the selective empathy is paid for in human lives
Thank you for such a nice talk… Socially responsible and to the point…. Unlike some of your bosses who seem to revel in divisive talk
The spirit of Mumbai comment 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
7 yrs for father. 5 for the son driver of car...+ No more driving for at least 30 years from now. Compensation to the dead, etc as per rules. Tho value of life is not by money.
You nailed it!! How the authorities allowed the car to be handed over to the buyers without registering the car
Highly condemnable. The parents should spend their future days with the Minor in kail, they being promarily reponsible.
What is never considered before permitting such vehicles to run on the Indian Roads?
Are there enough roads capable of withstanding such
high speed vehicles?
Does our roads, any where in the country, have the capacity to allow such high speed riding.
Why permit such vehicles to be sold if the roads can't accomodate.
Restrict the licensing to those which have such speed limits acceptable to the roads.
I think the Modi govt should interfere in these kind of state affairs as well ! since the sates in india are in efficient and lawless
If these issues are not addressed, all the development and chest thumping is waste
Well said madam
We can bark as much as we want, but the fact is the Police itself has cleaned up a lot of crucial evidence even before filing the FIR when the MLA was sitting at the Police Station. This culprit will never get punished. Many eminent lawyers have echoed this opinion.
Aside being about rich or poor, parents are one of the main problem. The rich encourage underage driving in luxury cars, the upper middle class gives the steering of their car to their minor kids and put those pics on social media with pride, the lower middle class or poor families handover their 2-wheeler to kids without even teaching them about rules/regulation. Apart from corruption and loopholes in the law, our society is to blame for most of such incidents.
That can't be DEMOCRACY ☝️..
Let people make it function the way it ought to be 👌👍💐🙏
Check how much the judge was paid and get him. Check his mobile it will be very clear. Why are the RTO. cops not pulled up for letting them drive a vehicle without proper papers. All this shows the corrupt systems. Who is to blame, but the ones sitting in the high chairs. Life of the poor in India is very very cheap.
Great presentation of the content - one of the examples to understand the culture & System - and how they function.
“Without strong watchdog institutions, impunity becomes the very foundation upon which systems of corruption are built. And if impunity is not demolished, all efforts to bring an end to corruption are in vain. “ -
Sad , we need to change this. Automate things and don't depend on corrupt police and judges.
Grat report. Brought so many facts in just one video.
Logical and rational. The judicial system in India keeps kowtowing to the rich and powerful. We can be sure that the system will go into overdrive to protect the culprits in this case as well
Absolutely.
The Local MLA of NCP (Ajit group) who was employee of Agarwal before electing as MLA, rushed to accidental spot to save the accused minior driver, Agarwal from public and also visited police station influencing release of accused on bail, the Law Degree of judge needs to be verified, original or chal dhal chap....
Our RTO officials are busy collecting no parking fines, they don't see the caliber of the speed car before authorizing the sale , knowing very well that our city doesn't have a proper infrastructure
This reporting is both accurate and sad. This is what happen when national pride overtakes national welfare. Making example of this kid won’t make any difference Unless the law is uniformly applied. “Our compassion is often conditional, circumstantial and not meant for everyone” absolute truth about our society including me implicitly.
Pls name and shame the judge who presided this case! O one is above the law, let it be a 17 year old brat or Salman Khan, shame on these ppl!
hard hitting truth... very well written and presented
Why and who verified his age before filing F.I.R. ? It has to arrest the person and produce before the court first, then his age is verified in the court. But here they first verified because they wanted to make it juvenile case?. Gave him pizza and burger?. Got bail for him in 12 hours ?
Very pertinent point talked about in this video. This is something that we all need to ponder over. We do not live in a utopian world yes, but that should not dictate our assessment of how biased our judgements and reactions are to fellow humans.
Victims should be compensated very a heavy amount as they are highly educated people.
I saw this car that day in the afternoon in kp I just came out of lean 7 that traffic place then the car drive off but at then when i saw the car in the afternoon closed to 4pm he was driving fine only for me to here that the same car i saw in the afternoon got an accident in the morning and kill two people i was so surprised because i saw the car in the afternoon with my two eyes 😞😞😞
I wonder if our RTOs issue licences to drive or to kill.
Your hard hitting words will never be understood by us ever . That’s the crux and saddest point .
In depth reporting , kudos madam
Before I get negative replies - has there been a proper validation of the victims ? were they sober and were they driving safe? were they obeying lane driving? were they following safety protocols ?
heart goes out to the victims and the driver should be punished but do we have enough information before we all go slamming one side? Asking a very simple question and not challenging the person behind the wheel should be punished. But should the investigation not be a bit more open ?
True analysis of our existing system 👍
Were the victims wearing any protective headgear? This could also be investigated.
Please...if you are middle class and have any chance to go abroad to a more civilised country ..leave ASAP
Why India is like cursed by God ! A section of people are thinking and fooling others that country reputation worldwide is full of respect, admiration, and even fear ! When all the world are laughing or shaming about Gaumutre, Mulle or Rappers !
Indian wasn't such humiliated at the independance, because most of politicians had true dedication for the nation instead of their ego or babas ! Now, it's always busy of speaking of Vishwamitra, Sanskaar or Minorities, but with equipping their own children with Angrezi Rani ka Passport !
That's how it has always been and it will always be. 😅😅😅 Master morality
Is it any different in other parts of the world !
The Price for our Selective Empathy is Paid for in Human Lives 💔💔💔
well said Ma'am well said
If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.
A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Liked your straightforward talks. However, we look forward to your equally honest assessment on the merits of farmers' agitation and activists from a particular political party not being allowed entry in parts of Punjab.
Same case happened in Kolkata. Killed security personal.
Journalism at its best. Good job Karan…!
I have always believed that it is dangerous to go out late nights, perhaps because I belong to an older generation. While our youth have modern thinking, our systems have not been upgraded to secure night life properly. While the video lists various contributors to the tragegy, some very slow changes in our society such as the break down of family oversight of teenagers, late night hoteling/pub culture, the emphasis on "showing off" and the pressure to show that one has "arrived" are undoubtedly the subterranean contributory factors. Brining up our children to be good, aware citizens is our national duty.
6:19 the issues you raise are all about corruption in society. Do we as a society comply with the law? What kind of methods would you like to see in a party manifesto to address these issues? Each time a person overspeeds, or bribes a cop or any official, or takes a bribe, or installs illegal wiring, should the govt install a switch in the brain which will stop his action? Or an alarm to beep loudly and alert everyone around?
Wouldn't such stringency lead to fascism, something that the govt is constantly accused of?
Doesn't "system" include colleges, clubs and other institutions? Will any college welcome such a person as its student. Shouldn't the major clubs (such as Poona Club) come out banning him from its doors forever. Please think about it
Karanjit madam
My reco for preventing such accidents is disallow cars to run in India which can be driven at speed over 100 kph.
The sad take on this event is that it confirms the corruption and decay of the judiciary in India today - which in the past was thought to be above corruption and politics . Now they too seem to be swimming in the cess pool along with the police and the politicians . Sad state of affairs indeed
The police commissioner should be sacked. His police kept him in the Snr PI's cabin and ordered pizzas and fries 🍟. And then he says that the police has done everything. Yes police has done everything to shield the accused.
6:28 u mentioned bjp warcries here but not others like , caste survey , wealth distribution, 1lakh/month ?? Why selctive journeyl-ism 🐷
Thanks for sharing ! I would like to add that we consume chemical laced foodstuffs on a daily basis . Our pavements are deathtraps that force pedestrians to step onto the roads at peril to our lives . The liquor permits are another matter for corruption .... at one time , these weren't available to women in parts of Maharashtra , " because women don't drink alcohol " Thanks for the sexism ! This results in liquor being served indiscriminately !
You are right!!!. They don't value common people's lives. though we pay taxes to pay these people's salary.
Make laws stringent so that citizens don't dare to repeat the same.
This is called minimum gov maximum corruption.
If the family of victims decide to fight; how many years to get justive
We all are responsible for every death occurring in the streets of our country, we are so much into the use of four wheeler and two wheelers, whether, they are actually required or only to show off ourselves, someone, who is significant in life or to people in the known sector. Do we need them as a needy or just for the sake of or inflow of money or reasons, I already have mentioned. I feel ashamed as a human being on this planet and this flamboyant society.
Spot on.
Good journalism .:: why don’t journalists address these issues
