I find vessel being masked and anonymous symbolism for a great many other things. And the line about being a vessel being a living drama of your pain. Is very apt. In a way we are all vessel. He is holding a mirror up to us reflected through him. Our loss. Our pain. Our joy. Our love. To seek closure or new beginnings.
For every new sleep token fan there comes "the point". That point is when you get it. Its not about genres. Not about charts. Its about honest music and music that cares just being what it needs to when it needs to through honest lyrics and that's why so many connect to this band. Sure the lore with sleep and everything is a whole other thing to unpack. But your journey with sleep token has been great to watch and when music makes you feel you know its done right.

Well seeing as how you are your soul then the body is the vessel.

There is a certain pain that is in every one of Vessel’s lyrics, this music is love, it is loss, it is rage, sorrow, and yearning, it is everything that we experience personified, a reflection of light and dark.
And I think anyone who has experienced emotions like these, will find comfort in the music, knowing that they’re not alone, that they are NEVER alone. 🤍

What if the toxic relationship led him to try to end himself, but he survived. In a weird way he still loved her, but after he survived she refuses to accept him back???

This is such an underrated and under appreciated song. Most reviewers just concentrate on the vocoder and how it sounds like Imogen Heap or Bon Iver. This song is so much deeper especially with the video. I think it’s one of their most personal songs they’ve written. It’s heartbreaking and raw. I really appreciate how you go deeper into the meaning of songs lyrically while appreciating it musically. This song kills me especially when I think about the lyrics in the video.
You should watch the live version as well. No voice enhancement. Just him the piano and the audience oh and backup singers. You should also listen to Vessel’s message to his fans. It’s very moving and poetic.

I take the vocoder as him wanting stability through his emotions.. It feels like he is crying as he is singing this. I think it adds a lot to the meaning of the song. For me at least.

I have an interpretation where the lyrics are about someone that has died, presumably his partner. Let me elaborate (this is all my interpretation and nothing is based on facts):
The city of ice is Vessel, and although he seems very cold, he is burning in the inside. A burning desire for her.
“The skies” are what separate Vessel and his partner (she went to heaven), and his burning cathedrals turn it into glass. Because glass is made by heating up sand (simply put). So this glass is a metaphor for a fragile and sharp border between him and his partner.
“The wounds of the past” I interpret as his memory of her passing. And “the echoing futures” are his knowledge that life goes on.
“So won’t you fall for me?” Doesn’t mean falling in love to me, to me it means falling from the heavens. And the “fractured existence” is a nice callback to the “glass” lyric, but it’s also the broken existence of his partner.
“From reality”, in reality she can’t return.
He also mentions a “garden” which I interpret as the garden of eden. Which is also a heavenly concept.
And the reason why I think it’s about his partner is because he says “I am yours in the end” which would be a weird thing to say about anyone but his partner.
Hope this is in any way, shape or form understandable to anyone haha, thought I’d share my thoughts on this masterpiece of a song.

Ah, yes, the conundrum of Sleep Token lore. The more you hear, the less you know. I'm not sure there is one concrete narrative. Or no one has cracked the code, yet, and Vessel isn't talking. (literally) So everyone has their theories and they go round and round and shift and change like trying to catch a school of fish. Just when you think you've got it something else comes along to contradict or recolor your perspective and you're back at square 1, building a new theory. But that's also the joy of it - hearing what others see and viewing it through their eyes, building a new world with them. It's confusing and wonderful and we love that journey because it's both personal and very communal. 🙏 PS - the sodden note in the video is paper covered with handwritten lyrics to the song.

This is perhaps your best reaction yet and certainly the best I’ve ever seen for this song.
Your analysis is so good for just a first or second listen. The video really adds so much more depth to this song.
FWIW, I think your interpretation at 16:43-17:00 is absolutely spot on. If you listen back to the songs you’ve already listened to with this idea in mind, it makes sense. This is equally applicable for the songs you’re yet to hear.
If this story bears any similarity to real life lived experience then I just can’t even…

There has been a recent development on this... At the Philadelphia live show (available on TH-cam) the Interludes were recordings of a conversation, presumably between Vessel and Sleep (or The Mask) about their purpose and meaning to each other and the audience. This exchange is very similar to what seems to be the dialogue flashing up in Fall For Me.
Vessel is always talking to Sleep in some way, but occasionally it's very direct.

  • @earthscorcher

Your Atlantic analysis made me realize something that I think may fit a lot of this.
I think she was may have been pregnant, and they were fighting and got into the accident (drove off into the ocean maybe), and they both survived - but their child didn't. "Crumble like a temple built from future daughters." That line confused the fuck out of me for a long time, but I think I get it now. Could be wrong, but it was a thought I had.
This song further confirms for me that they both survived the accident, and were reeling in pain, so they both attempted - either separately, or together. If they lost their child to the accident, it would make sense to want to be submerged together *with* their child.

    • @earthscorcher
      @earthscorcher 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

"And through echoing futures, over buckling sutures, that hold back the wounds of the past." Echoing futures being their lost child's future that never had a chance, and obvious buckling sutures regarding the long sleep.
The more I look at this, the more it makes sense to me.

There’s an ultrasound of a baby in the moon on the cover of TMBTE. There’s also a song on that album that seems to directly address this as well. Could just be me extrapolating out of thin air but I def feel like a child was lost in one way or another (pre-birth)

This song is so interesting, vessel is the instruments in this and it is amazing! This album is massively centred around aquatic themes, each single cover art had a part of co-ordinates which created the exact co-ordinates to Point Nemo, the point in the ocean the furthest from land,
Also, the visualisers all have a meter reading on them, and as you progress through the Album the further underwater the meter reading shows, just sick!

"For the time being, you are still a perfect reminder of what, all of these scars on my arms are for.' Now I can say for certain seeing HD photos that unfortunately there was a unaliving attempt on Vessel's part, which I'm sure is what he references to in 'Atlantic' and 'Are you really okay?'. I believe that this relationship was very toxic to Vessel, and yet Vessel just kept giving and giving until he had absolutely nothing left, and she still didn't love him like he loved her, if at all. 'You don't really love, you just hate to be alone' (When the bough breaks)

Great reaction, and man I love this song. One of the strongest they have, made even more amazing without any instruments. I think to me, this song is written by Vessel, for Vessel. He wants to be able to love himself. Just my view of course, keep up the good work!

  • @HolyBurntTrephines

There is a lot of duality in the lyrics-the struggle between wanting to practically be one with her and reflecting on how unhealthy and destructive that kind of connection is. The price that he has to pay might be as high as his life.
More will come to light on the next album, so you have a lot to look forward to.
I can't wait to hear your interpretation of High Water; it is my favorite on the album and, in my opinion, also the most heartbreaking.

You missed the variation on the final chorus. “With my love as your garden” could be an early call out to Take Me Back to Eden. “I am yours in the end” also makes me think it’s more of a mourning towards the end. There’s a lot of blurring of which lyrics seem to be metaphors and which seem a bit too real.
I think the motif of the 3 albums is about a toxic relationship, that either spurred from or resulted in the loss of a baby. The emotions that follow that and the stages of grief. It ties in with many other songs and creates a beautiful, heartbreaking trilogy of albums.

  • @Calirohe
    @Calirohe 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

That song definitely took me by surprise too and I think it says a lot about it that the shortest song makes your longer video ^^
And I had not tought about the pact, it is a very interesting idea that might shed a different light on some things. I am going to re (re, re-...) listen to the album with that idea in mind, see where it gets me. As for this song, I wondered if he is not talking to himself, at least to some extent. There are other hints in other songs that he cannot live with himself (either literaly or metaphorically) for reasons unclear, and your theory of a suicide pact "gone wrong" (not that it could ever go well, but you see what I mean ^^''), it might explain the "I want to understand to what it is to let go - I want to want to live."
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, hearing someone else's theories always add an additional layer of depth to the songs, imo :)

Sorry I’m late to the sleep token party. What if in this song, the words are to the audience (us). Saying that he will carry the weight of our pain. Perhaps he wades into the water to symbolize the death of his former self to become vessel (pictured in the first frames of the video as the hand coming out of the sand).

Im not so sure that his lyrics are always eluding to his own personal experiences. Songwriters, poets, teachers, comics, entertainers, are typically highly observant and or intuitive/empathic... He could be creatively inspired by any number of experiences in life, his own and other's, both real and imaginary. He's very into fanatasy lore, gaming, philosophy, history, numerology, psychology and i dare say - neo spirituality, from what i understand. All are huge reservoirs of inspiration to draw upon, no doubt.
Ultimately, creatives are story tellers - and im not sure who said this, but 'why/don't let the truth spoil a good story'.
