    The most recent data has average diesel cost in the US at $2.936/gal, and gasoline $2.473/gal. What this means is that at 27mpg the Ram running diesel gets you 9.19 miles/dollar, while the Ecoboost gives 9.3 miles/dollar, or another way to look at it is the Ram gets a gas equivalent 22.74 mpg.

      Here's 2 examples: It's pouring rain, you have a couple large items that require both hands. Instead of walking them over, putting them down, opening the tailgate and then picking them back up, you can pop the tailgate, carry them over and pop them in. Another example: You're operating a forklift with a pallet. Instead of having to hop off the forklift, you can press a button and the tailgate will drop. It's the convenience factor

Also, the Ram is not a 6 year old truck, it was redesigned not 2 years ago with the diesel being introduced last year.

      Petrol and petroleum are two unique substances. Petrol is refined from petroleum, just like diesel is refined from petroleum.
      If Denver ever secedes from the British isles and adopts the american word "gasoline" I think a lot of the confusion between petrol/gasoline and petroleum would go away.

    • @MrKeyboardCommando
      @MrKeyboardCommando 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bob Hope What confusion ? Petroleum refers to both both crude oil and petroleum products. Petrol derives from the French ' petrole ' which comes from the Middle English ( derived from medieval Latin ) ' petroleum '. Or, to put it simply, petrol and petroleum both derive from the same word. The only person confused by petrol/gasoline/petroleum would appear to be yourself.

    • @bobhope4288
      @bobhope4288 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrKeyboardCommando Are you so young that you haven't finished your basic schooling or did you drop out? Here is the knowledge you're lacking: auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/alternative-fuels/question105.htm
      Petroleum is the unrefined crude oil, petroleum can be refined into many different substances, like gasoline(petrol), diesel, kerosene and many many other substances.
      Petrol is a refined petroleum product, just like diesel is a refined petroleum product.
      PETROLEUM IS MORE THAN JUST PETROL.
      P.S. I wasn't even the original one to make this point, that was Don Hanson. So your comment about me being the only one shows you lack basic comprehension skills.

      @MrKeyboardCommando 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Hope Bob, I can't help it if the English language doesn't comply with your desires. I'm simply stating what the rest of the world says. noting that the previous F150 with either the Triton 4.6 or the Triton 5.4- This 2.7L Ecoboost out performs both. Both of these trucks are amazing. it just comes to a matter of styling and preference. Last nights Top Gear they used the F150 Raptor and the Silverado Z71 Diesel. They were impressed with both trucks. This made me feel proud because the British Top Gear really disliked American trucks until now, and they are actually considering buying a truck for their personal life. American trucks came a long way and are really good now.

      Acuravigor47 Sorry, but you are wrong on this. The Hennessey VelociRaptor 600 used had no such upgrades. The suspension and driveline were stock. Also, that Silverado wasn't a 1500, it was a 2500. There is no reason that driveshaft should've failed.

Acknowledging that, I would want a steel body over aluminum, but Ford does get cool points for that. To me the 600 pound gorilla is the diesel engine; it's about time an American pickup had a diesel in it. (Dodge had one a while back but it was an import.) I'll wait 'till the trailering test for a real comparison of the two. (Funny, another test I just watched gave the Dodge the edge on the interior; was Dodge set up in this test?

    ok, so, kodose to ram for 27 MPG, but mide you its a diesel, so, ram has 27 HY, Ford has 23 HY, lets say you thake a 100 mile HY trip.
    in ram, that's 100/27(MPG)=3.7(Gallons of fuel)
    so then 3.7x3.0(Dollars of diesel fuel here in FL)=$11.11 to do the trip,
    with ford, 100/23(MPG)=4.34(Gallons of fuel)
    so then 4.34x2.20(Price of reg gas in FL)=$9.56 dollars to take the trip,
    so, with less fuel economy, ford is cheaper to drive than the dodge. and $1.55 can add up over the life time of the truck.

      and, over a life of say 200,000 miles, the fords estimated cost of fuel is $19,130 total. dodge is $22,222, for those with out a calculator, the ford is $3,092 CHEAPER on gas over a 200,000 mile life time.

      National average on Gas is $2.27
      National average on Diesel is $2.86
      Ram 12k a year Fuel COST is 1558

      The02CumminsRAM These are comparable trim levels, the ecodiesel is an expensive option, the 2.7 is not. A good chunk of the cost is that you cannot buy this truck with a diesel without getting the expensive 8 speed transmission. Something to take into consideration aside from the admission price of getting an ecodiesel over the same equipped Hemi truck. Although it costs about $3500 msrp over the Hemi, the actual sale price can be a $10,000 difference, because Ram discounts the hemis a lot more than the ecodiesel. $10k buys a lot of gasoline. Also factor in maintenance cost, and this will go for hemi, or the ecoboost vs ecodiesel.
    Hard to get a warranty approved oil change done on the ecodiesel for less than $200, you can do an oil change on the Ford for the price of the ecodiesel oil filter. DPF fluid consumption, and check how much a transmission filter change costs for the Ram 8speed. Just food for thought.

    Always fun to watch TFL review new trucks. Downside is they never really do apples to apples. If you're going to compare aesthetics, such as the interior of a vehicle, you should consider the trim levels. Lariat to Outdoorsman? The Lariat would win hands down. The upper trims of a Ram do not seem dated, unless you're in a trim below Laramie. I'm sure the XLT trims will have dated plastics too.

      Uncle Deez that's not true. These trucks don't even compare. That's like comparing a ram 2500 cummins vs a F150 3.5 ecoboost......the ford is faster but other than that the ram fucks the ford up in every way. Also wait ten years I bet you'll see all those rusted out warped shit aluminum "trucks" that have holes in the body that are rotting underneath because they can't take punishment steel can. It may be heavier and slower but it can tow more and it will outlast the ford easily. Plus your talking about a 7 year old truck vs one that's been completely redesigned...way t until the new ram comes out it's going to blow the doors off the f150. It's going to have turbo engine choices as well...2.0 turbo base engine with 325 horsepower. Much better economy than the 2.7

    Edmunds actually did long term tests for each of these trucks. While they did encounter one engine stall issue along the way, they apparently approved its mileage and performance and gave it 4.5/5 stars. While the F-150 didn't have the same engine issue, general maintenance like oil changes was complicated and it seems they weren't impressed by the mileage and apparently the 5L V8 version actually got slightly better mileage. They gave it a 4/5 stars.

      Cummins did make an engine for the 1500. The 5L V8. Short of pushing it off a cliff with a tailwind in the bargain, it could never pass 24 MPG. FCA already had a proven engine available from VM Motori, so they said, "pass." Cummins was shocked, but really, they've had enough (more than enough) time to learn how to build modern efficient compact diesels. They finally found a sucker, er, buyer in Nissan. They'll be damned lucky to recoup the dev costs.

    I’ve driven both and picked the f150 with the 3.5. Glad I did, friend of mine tows a similar trailer to mine and when on steep grades his ram struggles to maintain speed even with the 8 speed trans. My ecoboost with or without my tube maintains speed without much of any downshifting and in fact easily picks up speed. I love the idea but to small of a diesel for this size truck put a 4.2 litre with some more ass to it and I would get one.

    EcoDiesels are failing shortly over 100K miles. MAJOR FAILURE. Cam gear slips on the camshaft, since they did not bother with a spline or keyway... only bolt tension holds it. It slips, comes out of time.. valves hit pistons BOOM.... And you looking at BIG BIG bucks. Strangely this is not a new engine.. It's been used in europe for a while seemingly decen reliability.
    If it was me, I would take the 2.7 or 3.5 Ecoboost or the 5.0... if I needed to tow. I might buy the BASE Ram 3.6 engine. If I just needed a lighter duty work truck. The 3.6 Pentastar in the Ram with that 8spd ZF Trans is pretty nice for just driving around, and gives 25MPG.

    • @svt89
      @svt89 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kens97sto171 I would choose the 5.0 over the ecoboost all day I mean failed turbos and shit fuel mileage out the 3.5 is pointless if you tow. But if I tow a lot which I do I would go Cummins and have no problems. Half tons are only good for light towing and around town.

    • @kens97sto171
      @kens97sto171 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +svt89
      failed turbos would not worry me, but just the added complexity of making all that work as the years pass. I'd agree with the 5.0 choice.
      I think the 3.5 can tow more than the 5.0
      and a Cummins powered truck is way overkill for my needs... awesome engine though.
      the base v6 in the Ram with the 8spd runs way nicer than the base v6 in the Ford.
      just not sure if trust a Chrysler product right now.

      kens97sto171 I've owned plenty of Ford,GM, and Chrysler products and Ford would have to be 3rd on the list of reliability haven't been impressed with any of there diesels at all was impressed with my 5.0 mustang though. And the 3.5 eco is no good if its in the shop all the time and can't pass up a gas station lol !

      @kens97sto171 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The last decent Ford Diesel was the 7.3 next 2 were garbage, and too soon for the current one to know.
      have you heard about bad stuff on the 3.5?
      and I agree the 5.0 is pretty nice.
      I'm leaning towards a base Tradesman RAM with the 3.7 V6. plenty of power for my needs, and 25MPG or better HWY.
      what issues have you had with the various brands?

    I know that the ecoboost lineup is very impressive but you have to give it to that 3.0L Diesel. They're known to be super long lasting on top of its awesome fuel economy. I figured that it would take just 4 years to pay off the extra cost of the diesel over the Hemi.

    Interesting about the MPG. When I went to a Ford Round up and drove the big 3 trucks the guys from ford was pitching that the Eco boost f-150 would get 30mpg and that the Eco diesel was getting poor fuel mileage. Now I know why they wouldn't produce any hard facts.

    People who want a truck for work, get a ram. People want a truck to use as a car , get a ford.

    Diesel is petroleum. biodiesel is made from vegetable oil but regular diesel is made up of petrochemicals that you get when you refine crude oil. Unless I'm mistaken the f-150 is flex fuel so it will run on e 85 which is mostly ethanol which can be made from all kinds of plants that contain natural sugars. So both vehicles can run on petroleum and renewable plant based fuel.

    I drove a ford Ecoboost last night on a two hour trip it's one of our new work trucks and the fuel readings don't go with the hype ford is feeding us! Cruse on the whole time on level road was 17.7 and when it started going up hills would drop to 13.8 . This was with no load and cruse on 70. Don't waste your money!

      Are you insane put it in drive and don't mash it to the floor until you hit 70 drivw as though you have a small amount of sense and low 20's is all but guaranteed
