I feel like it’s a wake up call for me to be more purposeful about things, I found its criticism of self-indulgence somewhat enlightening like Etienne’s little story at the end captures what it means to find meaning in staying active
I often listen to new music with as little other sensory input as possible (aka in the dark, slouching on my couch) and though it would be appropriate to do so for this album, however I severely underestimated exactly how hauting and unsettling the album would be. It was such an out of body experience for me and I eventually had to turn a night-light on because it felt like I stopped existing and was aimlessly floating in space (in purgatory one might say). You really hit the nail on the head when you described this album as a museum exhibit! I loved the journey it took me on but I am unsure how often I will revisit it.
@@EljohnMacaranas i think it can be a car album, but more like driving through the woods kinda album, where you shit your pants the whole time you're driving LMAO
I had a *jarring* moment the first time I listened to this album. It was the Eve of the fires that took Los Angeles by surprise as I was standing on the roof of my apartment holding the door open from the dry wind. I listened to the first song expecting something to follow what I thought was an homage to Family Tree (intro) with the hymn and then just stood stuck taking in my surroundings as the drone just stayed dormant under the track. It felt like all the color just left the world as the drone went on to the point where I got scared and went back down to my room where I just let the album play as I slept. 10/10 best first listening experience. Also dw about me, I wasn’t affected by the fires at all save a few days I couldn’t run.
This album has become my soundtrack as I'm studying for finals. The drawn out ambient instrumentals and low lyrical content make this surprisingly good for focusing. AOTY methinks.
I know this isn’t supposed to be in the preachers daughter universe but I can’t feel that some of the songs feel like they came straight from the unspoken horror of the actions the character experiences in preachers daughter, housofpsychoticewomn could’ve come anytime between Ptolmea- Televangilsim, and would’ve fit perfectly into the story. This album is so well crafted I can’t wait to see what the next project Ethel does contains. There’s just so much to dig into on this album alone that my comment doesn’t do it justice, like go listen to this album for yourself
A lot of people have stated that they’re reminded of an artist named Grouper. For me I mainly was reminded of Low, which was a band that tragically ended due to member Mimi Parker’s passing. I wish I could have heard her and Ethel sing together.
Their last three albums were produced with BJ Burton who helped on How I’m Feeling Now. They’re very noisy and glitchy but still have that slow darkness and therefore have them a bit of resurgence. But their most famous projects are their debut and their Christmas EP from what I’ve seen
I held off on listening to this album because I'm sensitive to sounds, but finally listened to it at work while editing videos (news editing). I never had a sound make me feel like I couldn't breathe at times, but I'll probably go back to it when I need to get into a darker head space for my own art.
I honestly thought I’d hate the record after seeing people’s discourse but I genuinely loved it. etienne, onanist, amber waves and thatorchia were standouts to me but etienne moves me so much for some reason because of the beautiful outro
My only gripe is I wish the vocals were a little more pronounced on some of the tracks, but I enjoy this as a lil side EP while we wait on the next installment of PD.
After listening to this album for the first time I had to put on silly videos before falling asleep bc I was so scared and unsettled!! It's my introduction to drone music and such an emotionally impactful album. Vacillator is on a loop for me. Thatorchia is probably my favorite track though.
I have listened to this album since the day it came out, pretty much on a loop i am just so amazed by it and I cannot stop thinking about it. i guess the only break i'll have from it will be the eusexua drop
I've keep on crawling back, cimbing from the great dark to the divine theatre, through the ring, and back again. My fave songs from it are the title track, vacillator, pulldrone. I really love the digitally corrupted way the droning voice talks in perverts, and the way the effect is used again in pulldrone when Hayden says perversion. I found the EP equal parts terrifying, devastating, and erotic. Though I tend to have recency bias, this is currently my favorite project of hers, and my favorite project to come out in the past year. Also, in my mind thatorchia and august underground are sister songs.
I would like to make it clear that what follows is my own interpretation of the project "Perverts": In my eyes, there are many parallels to "The Devine Theatre" in this project. Anyone who has read this book will probably also recognize these parallels. Perverts, the title song, seems like something that pulls you down. Deep down into the pulgery. The following songs sound to me like what is waiting for you down there. Towards the end of the EP, especially in Thatorchia, you don't feel like you are sinking, but rather you feel like you are starting to float. As if you were flying out of The Pulgery again. Almost as if this were the final song of the project. Amber Waves, on the other hand, seems, at least as I interpret it, like arriving in an otherworldly environment. As if you have freed yourself from your fears, or whatever Hayden imagines this project to be.
let me tell you i was on a whole nother planet listening to this album. As early as house of psychotic woman i was like ok let’s come up with something new and skipped through have of the “i love you’s”. but it was okay because we were so back because vacillator is the best song of all time the only songs im still spinning regularly is amber waves and vacillator. this album feels like an educational exercise and a transitional album to see what she could do with the least amount of lyrics possible. the soundscaping is really good but i would cut off some of the fat on a song like house of psychotic woman because we didn’t need 7 straight minutes of “i love you”😭
I never liked Ethel at all but I do appreciate that she knows for sure wants to make. It's refreshing to see an artist with a clear vision in today's music landscape.
Apologies for the delay, I will be prompt next week with Eusexua’s review.
Wait ur covering twigs?!
OMG YES FKA TWIGS I LOVE YOU
the way this video is shorter than pulldrone
😭😭😭
the way I cackled at this comment
I agree when you say it’s not really an attempt to gatekeep her own music, if people don’t like it, they merely can just wait for the next one
The intrigue of the work becomes lost if we see it as just reactionary
@ agreed, it’s still its own piece also lots of love and effort was put into it
i listen to the album a lot more than i expected.. perfect for winter time to be introspective

I agree with the sensory input observation. Like I really felt like I myself was in purgatory listening to this in stark silence.
This album was unlistenable in my car, because I couldn't tell if half the sounds were my breaks giving out
It’s definitely a home album, like Preacher’s Daughter is a roadtrip record fs but this nah

Good to hear you made it out safe! All my love 🖤
Vacillator, Etienne and Amber Waves are the songs I use to go to sleep every night since the album dropped
Etienne’s so pretty
This album has become my soundtrack as I'm studying for finals. The drawn out ambient instrumentals and low lyrical content make this surprisingly good for focusing. AOTY methinks.
I used to study to film score back in the day, this record definitely would have filled that space for me!
Same, because of it I realized that ambient Lofi music helps me focus with my adhd

It’s definitely it’s own small thing but it does feel like a companion piece of sorts like
Wouldn't it fit better during her relationship w/ isaiah, before ptolomea?

Oh I need to check them out!

Literally it’s so suffocating
Perfect time to release a piece like this considering US politics rn
We’re all in hell 😭

Etienne’s outro is proof there’s still optimism in the darkness

i felt like i was on the edge of psychosis
Me when Amber Waves hits at 3am
Ethel is an artist and this is something I’ll visit for ambiance and creative work.
Glad you’re ok from the fires.
Thank you so much! It was genuinely scary, but an eye opener about climate change and the power of community

Thatorchia is such a perfect set up to Amber Waves
They do a great job at rocking me to sleep. This is excellent for meditation. I found that it truly digs at the inner consciousness. ❤❤
AOTY contender for me

Wait, this made the project make more sense to me! Thanks for sharing, damn Hayden really gave us a transcendentalist piece of art!
another incredible deep dive
Thank you 🖤🖤🖤
Not sure if you've ever gotten into Tinashe, but I think you should do a review and analysis of some of her albums; 333, Songs for you, BB Angel
I’ve always been meaning to, I know she’s wrapping up her trilogy of projects so maybe then
I AM SO SAT LEGEND ICON AND KING
💙💙🫡💙💙

Vacillator is so good like 😭
The best song for me has to be Amber Waves like it feels like a good mix of her more conventional work with the drone slowcore sound
Agreed but I adore Vacillator

Everyone wants that hit so bad, she don’t care
