Keep in mind, all Axel did was say "no" to her. If that's all it took to push her there, as sad as it is, it also implies she had unresolved psychological issues that should have been addressed during her upbringing but, somehow, for some reason, never were; someone handling rejection that badly typically speaks of other, very serious problems.
It also speaks to the fact that him rejecting her could've gone a very different, very BAD direction.
