    When he said “the first thing you’ll notice when you pick it up is the hoop” ...uhh not the giant red dot in the middle? Lol

      Plenty of heads out there with dots, can’t remember the last time I saw a drumhead with a hoop that wasn’t raw aluminum or white coated...

    There was a blow out sale at a local music store years ago and baught one ply coated Attack heads for my toms and used them w no muffling for ever at a low tunning and they sounded consistently awesome and served me well for a very long time.

    Watch his eyes when he rim shots it the first time with high tuning. It's like... wtf. Nice!
    Also he lost a bit of weight. Cool.

      They are not as widely used as other name brands. If I remember correctly they are cheaper but not necessarily cheaply made. Terry Bozzio has used them for years and they make a signature snare head for the drummer of legendary death metal band Cannibal Corpse.

    I've gone to all Attack Heads on my Tama Starclassic Maples and Starphonic Bubinga snare. I'm using the clear Royal 1 on my toms (coated batter on my floor tom), the Orbit 2 on the bass (with their Proflex 1 black bass on the front), and a coated Royal 1 (no overtone ring) on my snare batter. Absolutely love the beautiful tone I get with all these heads! The coating is by far the most durable I've ever seen. I just can't hardly wear it out... even playing a lot of brushes. The Orbit took a bit of experimentation with tuning to find the sound I wanted. It seems to be a lower pitch for a given tension compared to the Remo PS3 I had on there before. But once I figured that out, I really, really like it a lot! Very glad to see you guys reviewing these heads!

    I am using an Attack Baron for one of my gigs. I snare is a Yamaha Rock Tour Custom, 6.5x14. The head has been on one month so far. The recorded playback sounds great, medium tuning, no extra muffling. Tuning is consistent. They are from Cardinal Percussion. Excellent company. Also check out their Orbit Bass Drum Head, batter and resonant.

    Thanks for the insight into this head! When I was exploring this company I was ver interested in it. I'm curious to see longer term what your thoughts with Attack heads is. The set of heads that I was sent for my kit seemed great out of the box but around the 1 month mark I started having a bunch of issues with the coating wearing off on my snare batter (Royal 1 w/the over tone ring) and the 18" head not fitting on my floor tom(to be clear that issue didn't appear a month in, but right out of the gate). I also found the tom batters (don't remember what they were, but they were 2 ply clear with what looked like a bit of something to cause tone control on the outside edges) the tom batters seemed to lose their "life" really quickly and they just sounded dead and thumpy compared to what I'm used to (either a coated Ambassador or UV1). Not meaning to be negative about the company, but I look forward to hearing more about what you guys think about them. Sorry for the paragraph. lol

    Brushes with a top dot? They used to have Terry Bozzio signature heads that were single ply medium weight (coated or clear) heads & the only heads they made with DuPont Mylar. Same crimped counter hoop. The coating seemed heavier than other brands but, the heads sounded great. I still have ons as a batter on one snare & a bottom head on another snare.

  • @robertlucas9867
    @robertlucas9867 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I preferred crimped hoops because the glue (it didn’t matter if it was Remo or Evans) would eventually break free of the hoop. Not from high tension as some people will comment but from a lot of use. It happens more when the rim is not perfectly round whether it is dented from a drop or came manufactured like that because it was missed in QC. I’m happy to see Attack still using this method.

    • @robertlucas9867
      @robertlucas9867 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And of course the high tension requirements in Drum and Bugle Corp, college and high school percussion causes glue hoops to pop out which is why Remo and Evans does it on marching heads only.

    • @robertlucas9867
      @robertlucas9867 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    First! Thanks a bunch to you and your team, you guys put a top-notch product for us on these videos, which is-actual drum experience and dedication. Now, I play on a renown-gretsch and a Tama-starphonic brass snare, I play for cover bands, with Latin-percussion tracks, so I’m required to play a solid punchy back beat for a rock/funk song and be able to switch to a bossa the next song, if I decide to switch my whole kit to Attack heads what would be your recommendation/s??

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words! Glad to hear that you’re enjoying the videos. There are a lot of great options in their lineup and we’ve only just begun scratching the surface. The Royal1 Rev Dot or the Baron work out very nicely on snare. We’ve got the ThinSkin2 model on the toms and are SUPER happy with them. Orbit2 system is on the kick and we dig them but are also excited to try some of the other models. I’m confident you could find the sound you’re looking for with some fine tuning. Cheers! -Ben

    This is wild! I used to endorse Attack and even talked about partnering with an investor to buy them out but at the time, they were not for sale. They always sounded phenomenal but their film was significantly less durable than Remo. The logo was LOOOOOONG overdue for an overhaul. Best that 16" has ever sounded on any of your videos, honestly.

    Thanks again guys, always a good watch from the lads at SLaD.
    Great sounds! (I’d love to hear those cool Swiss-cheesed bass heads they make as well) I’ve always been impressed with Attack, they’re certainly underrated. The only reason I haven’t used them more is they’re not as widely available as they should be... I imagine there’s a kinda drumhead mafia thing going on. The ‘big boys’ make it tough for a competitor to come in and undercut them. Dudes in Fila track suits breaking flesh hoops and whatnot.
    I wonder if selling direct with say free shipping over $25 might be a better model for Attack - set up a well layed out website where I can hear sound samples of different heads, and add to cart right there. Take the big box stores out of the equation, have a better/direct connection with your consumer, and build the brand - simultaneously.
    This consultation is free, but if the folks at Attack would like to consult further - I will work for drumheads! Seriously.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The bass drum heads are actually the Orbit2 model (Swiss-cheese style) and will be covered in the future. In speaking with the team at Cardinal Percussion (owners of Attack Drumheads and product distributors) I don't think they're interested in direct sales as they want to support the music stores (something we REALLY need right now). Having consulted in e-commerce and UX, I'd recommend the same thing but I also really want to see the music stores survive so it would be great to develop the system you're describing (perhaps with video too...?) and direct links to stores carrying the heads. As the brand is a relatively new addition to the Cardinal Percussion portfolio, hopefully we'll see something like this in the not-too-distant future. Cheers! -Ben

    I bought one two weeks ago, special ordered it through Sweetwater and Cardinal Percussion. I put it on my 14x6 1/2 Pearl Free Floating Phosphorus Bronze snare. It sounded best at the high tuning. I play in a Skynyrd tribute band so I like my snare tuned lower. I did not care for the over ring. I plan on using it for a more “modern” project. Thanks for all of your videos!

    I played a few different attack heads back in the 80's and they sounded just that... very 80's, but you can tell with this head that they've actually put some legit effort into their design. It seems as the co has gotten attentive to some of the more specific needs and desires that we're looking to accomplish, and I for one appreciate that. On that thought, I described a snare to you in a comment a few months back, that had been built for me. So far I've tried out a half dozen different batter heads, but at $17 to $26 bucks a pop it's beginning to get a lil costly, especially when I'm not using but a fraction of the life each head had to offer. I'm searching for a head that brings out what this drum had to offer and I'm not ready to put it in a case and pull out another because I can't get it to sound the way I know it can. Though I'm endorsed, it's called at about $2,700, and it took a bit to settle on this snare. It's too pies of birds eye maple, one ply copper, two more bird's-eye, and the inner ply is again copper. The flanged hope are a lil heavy since they were dipped in Rose gold as well as all the lugs. It has a Trick brand triple position throw off and butt plate, a standard set of snares, and the dimensions are 6.5" x 14". I'm looking for a head that has the warmth and fatness of wood but makes the copper ring like copper but without a million overtones. I tune in the upper range because I like the feel and response if a tighter head. I could really use some help getting the right head. BTW I prefer coated on my snare

    • @KaiOwensDrums
      @KaiOwensDrums 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Have you tried the evans hybrid coated? It has a lot of punch but still sounds pretty fat, it made my steel snare sound brass, with very few overtones. I do not know if it would damage wood bearing edges though

    Cody it's so weird because a few months ago I got the idea to cut circles from red plastic folders I had laying around cut to the size of remo cs drumhead dots placed center for tom, snare and kick, adhered with double sided sticky sheet adhesive. The drums sounded thick and boxy if you will. Rather bassy with almost non existant over tones. Very different sound I've heard from any head. Very 80's effect like!

    Non-sequitur, but Ludwig heads (the ones that were/are actually made by Ludwig, not branded as Ludwig) used crimped hoops that were guaranteed not to pull out. I think the Ludwig hoop design was patented, although the patent may have lapsed. In any event, the crimped hoop, as you mention, makes for a much lighter hoop than one using epoxy to bond the mylar to the hoop. And there's no cracking when you first mount the head.

    Kinda looks like the Aquarian collar design. Been curious about the re-branding of Attack heads but gotta tell ya, seeing the visible dents in the head at 1:52 is concerning, that thing looks beat to hell (and i know you guys aren't bashers)! Would love to see a feature on the Orbit kick head, those seem promising.

      To be fair, we tuned this thing all across the range while we were experimenting and hit decently hard at a low tuning too. We wanted to abuse the thing and see how it held up. There's minimal wear on it after we removed it from the drum and nothing we're not used to seeing. Keep an eye out for more features in the coming months! -Ben

    I'm a Remo guy and given the fact that Remo's cheaper Encore-series heads have crimped hoops, as well, makes me a little suspicious of other brands not glueing their heads to the hoops (I am aware of marching heads having crimped hoops, as well). Also, I think you could mix a little more of the room into your examples, to make us hear more what you're hearing, when playing the drum. I must admit, that I don't listen to your videos with headphones, but I think it should sound good either way. By the way: I'm almost always sensing a gate during your examples. Is there something wrong with my speakers?
    Thanks a ton for your efforts, as always! Love your channel!

      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Key thing to remember: crimping doesn’t mean lower quality but rather a different manufacturing process. In the end, the proof is on the performance.
      With regards to the mix, I appreciate the feedback. The primary sound source is the C414 at ear-level over Cody’s shoulder with the close mics dialed in to represent what we’re hearing in the room. This actually sounds quite close to what you’d hear in the room but the room does have acoustic treatment so it’s not quite as “live” as one might expect. We’re not using any EQ, compression, or gates.
      More alternate mixes (room mic only, etc.) of certain demos will be included on our Patreon if you’re interested.

    hi guys! i'd like you to try my trick to have my own batter snare head. i take a clear G1 and i add a 4 inches diameter center dot under. not on top. this the fullest sound i ever experienced. it pops so hard ans sings too. rimshots are similar to the baron in this video. i make the dots with a black vinyl paper. if you want to dry the sound like HD dry system. take a lighter and a thin needle and stab the head between the lugs at 2/2.5 inches from the hoop. you end up with a funky poppy snare drum like OMG.

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So there are a couple of things to clarify- Evans has provided drumheads in the past for our Tuesday Tutorial videos but they have never sponsored us (no monetary support). We define this as a "Production Partner". We hope to continue to use Evans heads for our tutorials as we have the greatest amount of experience with them and I was closely involved with design/development of several of their models over the course of time that I worked for D'Addario.
      Attack Drumheads contacted us about sponsoring some Product Feature videos and we were excited to check out their product line and present our thoughts along with some demonstrations. So far we're having a blast putting them "under the microscope" here. We'd be open to doing this with Remo and Aquarian as well if they're interested in supporting our efforts.
      Cheers! -Ben

    I bought one and tested it out over a couple of days. I don't dampen as I feel like dampening reduces playability. Even when I tune this as high as it goes it still feels like it has a ring or tape on it with a dead feel. I was hoping to find a nice compromise with this but oh well. Looks cool.

I think you folks would be surprised if you only knew how many people have bought these kits or snares do to the way you make them perform and sound.Just maybe pearl and Ludwig should throw some Dow your way for all the free advertising. Promark was the Presenting Sponsor (financial support) for our second season of tutorial videos but had to cut that budget for 2020. Both Evans and Promark are still Production Partners (providing product) for our tutorials though we haven't been able to place a product order since the pandemic. Product features are supported by the brand represented and are outside of our Tuesday Tutorial series.
      We've been grateful for the support of our Patreon members for making it possible for us to even produce a third season. Without them we would have been forced to hold off for quite some time and there's no guarantee we would have been able to start up again. A Ludwig Supraphonic is a poor choice for testing heads. Those drums, as do Suprasensitives, sound great with a wet burlap sack as a head! OK, maybe that's going too far but you get the idea! See if it makes a cheap drum sound good!

    • @SoundsLikeADrum
      @SoundsLikeADrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've gotta disagree- they can sound quite bad when poorly tuned or with poor quality heads. We gravitate towards this drum because it's relatively transparent as far as the tone of the head coming through and we've also used it in a TON of our videos, making it an excellent reference point. These drums can be had for ~$250 too so they're quite affordable by comparison. I wouldn't ever think about a head making a drum sound better but rather a head either allowing the shell sound to come across quite clearly or affecting the tone. In the end it's all relative Cheers! -Ben

      No need to apologize. Not every head is for everyone/every use and not every sound is perceived the same by everyone. We happen to think that this head produced a great sound suitable to quite a few applications and it manages the low tuning range quite nicely. Still, there are some heads that we’ll be checking out in the future that might be better geared towards that. Thanks for watching!
