hey I just came across your videos and heard that you were a member of the DIY th400 group on Facebook which I'm a member of that group as well and just wanted to say that your explanations in deep and detail is extremely appreciated ain't too many people does that. keep up the good work and the excellent videos.
Good stuff. I would like to note for folks, that the old aluminum 400 apply piston is .060 THICKER than the 97 up 80e aluminum piston. If using an 80e piston you must use the 80e metal wave plate on top of the apply surface, if you don't use the wave plate your first intermediate steel in the stack will hit the beveled center support snap ring before the piston comes to complete rest in the bore. I have both Pistons here, and the difference is .060! If needed I have a pdf that clearly shows the difference and why the wave plate MUST be used if anyone needs. I prefer the older thick th400 apply piston personally in my 400s.
@@mikehlad9775 no prob at all Mike, there's not a lot of information out there explaining this difference. I've seen a LOT of modded 400s over the years that have a 80e piston installed.....with no wave plate at all, not good. Easier to just use the 400 thick piston if you can find it.
So is the 91-96 the same as the th400 aluminum piston and only the 97 and newer different? Can you give the thickness of each? I have an 80e in mine on the stand, but I'm not sure if it's early or late. Thanks
Another great informational video as always and one I've been wanting to see for awhile now. Something I've been interested in is the super top secret mods that the pro's and long time builders wont let go of..
Sharing my misfortune. Added a 4L80E Inter. stack and you can't use the .275 flat backing plate or your direct drum will hit the plate and hang it up in 3rd. What he is using is 91-98 backing plate which I will hopefully get Tuesday. I would leave a pic of the scoring marks if I could.
Thanks for sharing again great info looking forward to more is the drum with 34 element sprag the only harden part I can use out of the 4l80 for my th400
Hello , I am new new to your channel , and I have a Question , I have a 1972 Nova that has a TH350 , I want to beef it up , I thought about putting a 700r4 in it but that's just going to add more cost between the shifter and driveshaft , but I know there are parts from the 700r4 that will work in the TH350 , i was just wondering which ones and would what might need to be changed ?
Hi Shawn, i have a 475 that im preparing to build. It has the smooth inner race for the sprag. If i got a 34 element sprag and also the outer race for sprag, would i be able to run the 4 clutches on the th475 drum? I already have the 4l80 pressure plate
@@mountainsgarage thanks for the reply! I dry fitted them on and wasn't happy with how close it was. Was hoping the wider race would fit my drum with the 34 element spag
What is the difference between the tan stock type clutches the 400s use verses the high energy clutches? I've read the high energy don't grab as good but take more heat better. 4l80s use high energy bands too. What is advantage or disadvantage of using high energy material for clutches and bands?
Trying to figure out if all stock th400 used the same thickness intermediate snap ring? I ordered a hd snap ring thats .108" thick and was curious if the original snap ring was thinner than that so i could get a thin steel ordered to make up the difference in clearance.
I don’t follow what you are asking. Yes the HD snap rings are thicker, and can be had in various thicknesses. The thicker the better I think. And yes the stock ones appear to all be the same.
@@mountainsgarage i just finished my first 400 build but didnt know about hd snap ring until now. I have a case saver but was gonna pull it back apart and install hd snap ring. Wont the thicker ring decrease intermediate clutch clearance? Im at .050 with thinner oem snap ring.
Thanks for the video. Question. Im running a 66’ th400 behind a mild 454. I have a 3 clutch int. Setup that has a clutch pack clearance of 0.085” when measuring between the pressure plate and the first friction. Is this ok? Not much info as to what the clearance should be. ~0.09” steels, straight frictions, stock snap ring.
So I have a 3100 lb turbo LS street car. The car will spin just taking off from a light in 1st. If i quick shift it to 2nd while spinning is it actually running risk of hurting the sprag? It will spin still goin into 3rd so its not hooking and shocking. Thank you for all your info.
Other mods to the valve body and transmission would be required to make your own transbrake, and the reprogramming kit would not be needed as no automatic shifting after the modifications.
@@mountainsgarage is it possible to keep the forward shift pattern if I were to do that? And is it a video that you might make? Or would it just be better to go with a billet reverse valve body?
Hey question for you I just put a new torque converter in and it's vibrating in gear but goes away about 1500 rpm when you are sitting still any thoughts on what it could be it feels like its out of balance or something
@@mountainsgarage just let me know when you get a price I would like to be able to help you and your channel and still get a high quality product thanks again for info
From another builder , good video sir.
These videos are SOOOO Helpful.
Yup, love a clean shop but dread the process of getting there.

Also when in reverse come to a complete stop before going into forward gear.
Voodoo race garage, I believe the 4l80 front hub is also a good upgrade for the th400
Yes!
As always,great stuff brother!

The early 4L80E center support will transfer over. Not much else.
Great info Shawn. One question: The aluminum piston that you prefer, is it from the 400?
Yes it is.
Shawn, What Clearance are we looking for in the intermediate Clutch pack. I can Find 90 thousands clutches easy and the stack measures out to 1.05.
.030 to .050 or so.
What clearance do you aim for in the intermediate? I’m at .104” with 3 thick clutches and steels after removing the wave plate
@@LachlanRiordon It will work that loose but I shoot for around .050-.060

You can run 4 on the TH400 sprag race, but I feel more comfortable with the wider 4L80E sprag race.

That is a lot, .030-.050 range is what I shoot for.

where can i get the 12 spring package? part number? link?

Hi
How much clearance is fine for intermediate clutchs
Hi, can you use both case savers?
I guess with enough grinding you could, but I wouldn’t.
What's a good clearance for a 3 clutch intermediate?
.040-.050 ish is fine.
