Since there are not that many comments yet, I would really appreciate a reply from you (if your time allows) to the following point: The pressure on both flanks didn't stop. The Russians gained even more territory back during those days than the Ukrainians managed to capture newly. I am just confused by your remarks regarding the operational level. Assuming that the couple of independent sources I am using are not completely wrong, I am surprised that you didn't take this aspect in your analysis into account.
* Russia gains all the coal mines and anything of value. * Ukraine gains some farm land. Bargaining chip? This will go down in history as one of the greatest military blunders in history. Happens every time a politician takes control of military strategy.
The most likely reason for this exadurated attack is to overshadow the news of kurkove falling. Russian gov announced just before. They have done something similar every time. From bahkmut, avdivka, vuladar, and so on. Every time. Example the 2-3 times they did raids into belgorod area
Everybody talks about NK soldiers on this front. But nobody provided ANY real proof that they are really there. I am aware that there is a video of a dead soldier who has "Asian looks" and they provided with a paper in Korean BUT after a day or so it was prowen that written proof was a lie. UA showed us some drone footage where we can see soldiers in a distance getting shelled and they told us that they were Koreans. HOW you can recognize who is that soldier belongs to from a couple of pixels. As of today (16:00 8.1.2025) we can see that RU didnt stop the "squeez" and gaind more ground near Shudza and other places. (Sorry for my bad eng)

Hypothetically, could the counter arrack have been used to enable a withdrawal of troops in the northern sector of the Kursk salient? If that were the case, where should it have been directed? I do agree this counterattack has been a waste with little achieved. Another great clip, thanks.
I believe You are overthinking this action. The only reason for it is to distract media attention from the loss from Kurakhova. This pattern of spectacular offensive action after a loss is a common thread trough this war.
@Toonioni there overshadowing action has been obvious for 3 years. Go back and look at the time-line when the raided into belgorod area 2-3 times. And what was announced captured those days
@9:05 "Was not followed by at least another company" @9:40 "Has a good reason for losing a platoon" My guess would be the politicians demanded an attack. While command understood the futility of it, didn't want to waste a whole company but still wanted to show the boss he was following orders.

Based on the interviews of the Ukrainian POWs the second company of the 225th regiment was used in the attack. Due to prior losses the company was already at 50% strength and was essentially the size of 2 platoons. The POWs themselves were Storm-Z type convicts (one an actual criminal, the other was a former deserter). It looks like the company was essentially destroyed as a result of this action. Given the low amount of forces used, the only objective must have been PR.

I've heard speculation the reason this attack took place was because the Ukrainians wanted to take advantage of a bungled rotation, like how the Russians did to them in Ocheretyne after the fall of Avdiivka. Maybe the Ukrainians had bad intel, or the minefields and drones slowed them down enough for the Russians to send reinforcements. We likely won't know until after the war and historians get to cross-reference the battle diaries of the opposing forces.

There's literally no strategic objective to the direction of this little so called offensive
