    That was one hell of a project. Relatively simple processes, but getting the accuracy and timing right was really informative.

    The fit just doesn’t get any better than that. You’re absolutely right, the setup has to be spot on with a long spline like that. The errors compound quickly. Hope you find something simple on the Heron electrics.

  • @dutchgray86
    @dutchgray86 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    That Herbert production drill actually looks like a really nice example, most of them are well past it nowadays and with the multi position turret it would be more useful for small batch production work, just a shame there isn't a lot of that work left.
    The limited throat depth is a problem when your using one as a general purpose drill, better off with a big gear head drill.
    I did own a 4 head production drill for a while, only 1 head ran reliably, it needed new electrics really.
    It was more use as a convient adjustable height workbench than as a drilling machine.

    • @swanvalleymachineshop
      @swanvalleymachineshop  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks . I believe it has some drive issues in the turret . The main rotary switch might fit my Herbert capstan lathe , i hope ! It has a badge & machine number on it , cast in a brass plate . Property of Alfred Herbert Ltd , may have been one of their factory ones . 👍

    Nice job Max. A little story about my own spline cutting adventure. I cut a 27-tooth spine 5" long on a differential shaft for a rear end to lock the two spider gears together with a single point tool ground to an involute profile in a fly cutter arrangement. It came out great. Mind you, this was not a paying job, just for myself for my mini bulldozer project. It took me a long time of course but the end result was great. Cheers

    Max, regarding use of a dial indicator at 29:35 on: I can't think of a reason why one dial indicator would swing wildly when another would not, unless:
    1. One indicator has 5 times the sensitivity (distance between dial marks) than the other;
    or
    2. There is a dent in the shaft. When you changed indicators you indicated at a different spot outside of the dent.
    What's the story?
    In my experience, Mitutoyo make excellent instruments - unless you get a Chinese reject or fake on eBay (all Mitutoyo hand-held instrumets sold in Australia come from a factory in China, since they were forbidden to export from Japan due to being mixed up in an international sanctions-cheating scandal some years ago.

    Just a newbie question.
    On that Herbert drill vertical limitation: would a shop made riser block installed at the top/bottom junction of the two 1/2's of column assembly's be practical? Saw something similar on CEE video?

      It needs to come out rather than up . Easily done but i am not going to do it . The table is only good for mounting fixtures as it does not move .
