Hello, i have an MH 685 and i can't figure out if the machine is factory filled with transmission oil, or not.
I filled it with motor oil but i can't find any information in the manual about the transmission oil. Can you help me with this information?
    Thanks a lot!

Hi, thanks for your comment. The MH 685 will come with gearbox oil so you shouldn't need to fill this yourself, it’s just the engine oil you need to keep an eye on. We do recommend that a STIHL Approved Dealer changes the gearbox oil if necessary when it’s being serviced. If you notices the gearbox getting noticeably louder, we also recommend taking it to a dealer and they can check if the oil level is too low. We don’t sell the MH 685 here in Great Britain so it's worth confirming this info with your local dealer or the STIHL subsidiary where you bought it from as they’ll have the specific expertise on this product. Thanks, STIHL GB

@@STIHLGB Thank you for your quick response, it is really helpful since I'm already using the tool.
Indeed, the machine was purchased from Netherlands. I will look for a local dealer to help me with the service and maintenance for my MH 685, BR 800C, RM 756 YS and the small MS 181 C.
      Have a nice day ahead.
      Victor.

Which one for rough garden with rocks the size of your fist?

    • @STIHLGB
      @STIHLGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, thanks for your question. Tillers are designed for breaking up soil, not picking up rocks, so if the soil is particularly rocky, we would always recommend going over it first and removing any larger stones or rocks. Similarly, for rough, uncultivated ground, it's worth forking it over first to break it up a bit before using a tiller. For hard-baked ground, you can also use water to soften it up before using a tiller. If the tiller does turn over a large stone during use, we would suggest removing it at that stage so that it doesn't damage the tines. I hope that helps, thanks, STIHL GB

The tiller comes disassembled in a cardboard box. The assembly instructions are the worst I've ever seen. Moreover, there are nuts and bolts that have to be tightened which are in very awkward places where no socket/spanner I have can fit. I've spent two hours so far and am giving up until tomorrow. Beware.

Hi, thanks for your comment and I'm sorry to hear that the instructions aren't clear enough. I've passed your feedback on to our product team but in the meantime, we suggest speaking to the STIHL Approved Dealer that you bought it from as they should be experienced in assembling the products and they should be able to help. If you need any more assistance, you can also contact our Customer Services team on 01276 20200 or enquiries@stihl.co.uk. Thanks, STIHL GB

@@STIHLGB Thank you for your reply. Having now completed the installation, I'm being more specific, as it will be more helpful:
      1. The instructions at the start are all pictorial... it was only after I had completed that I saw that there were some words to help later in the manual. However, the words aren't very comprehensive either and use some strange vocabulary - bad translation?
      2. Several of the actions needed are difficult and fiddly. For example - tightening the nut and bolt on the top (the shape of the bar underneath makes it very difficult to get a spanner underneath and my socket set certainly wouldn't fit). There was one of the bolts on the "wheel" mudguards that was tricky too. Also, attaching the T-shaped throttle wire to the handles was difficult and took me about 30 minutes to complete.
      3. Instructions are sparse or non-existent on some actions - one appears to need to make a mistake and figure it out for yourself. For example - tightening the bolt for the handlebar adjustment - one only realises later that it needs to be left loose so that the black handle can be used to tighten. Similarly, it's only with trial and error that one realises that the throttle wire needs to go into the last of the three sockets - if you use either of the first two it springs out again.
      4. I cannot yet find any mention of what oil grade to use.
      5. Several tools are needed but not supplied. IKEA for example, provides allen keys of the correct size in each pack - nothing here for something far more expensive. I had the tools, many may not.
      6. All in all it has taken me about 5 hours to assemble - much longer than I would have hoped. Now googling for which oil to use.
