I'll be 32 this month and my grandfather on my dad's side was 32 in 1954. He died well before I was born. This video gives me a sense of what was going on when he was about my age now. It's awe inspiring how much the world has changed since then.
Also...the very first transistor radio, the Regency TR-1, was released late in the year...just in time for Christmas. It and its successors were instrumental in driving the rock n roll revolution forward...

I was born on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, '54. Six years later, Labor Day (a federal holiday) fell on Monday, Sept. 5, 1960, meaning my first day in first grade was the next day, on my birthday. Fate has a cruel sense of humor!
DiMaggio and Monroe went to Japan for their honeymoon but cut it short because Marilyn agreed to appear with other entertainers in nearby Korea to encourage American troops fighting a war there. The men gave Monroe an enthusiastic response. Back in Japan, Monroe gushed about her trip "you can't imagine what it's like to be worshiped by thousands and thousands of MEN!" In '54, my dad came home from an overseas job, bought a brand new '54 Chevy for $2400 cash, married my mom, bought a house, and I came along in '55. Took my driver license test in '72 with that same '54 Chevy. A better time in a better town in a better state in a better country.

Whoppers can't be beat! Lived in Miami Beach mid-'60s, and knew BK started in Miami the decade earlier. Those Quarter Pounders cost only 40 cents in '65! Fries only 20 cents. Shakes only 30 cents! A whole full meal for less than a silver-based dollar: 4 silver quarters which were plentiful! But their mintage ended in 1964, so the government could finance the Great Society programs and the increased Vietnam War!
If in 1954 you were driving a Mercedes, like the one at 1:20, people would automatically assume you had considerable wealth. It was that way until the early 1980's when affordable leasing options became widely available. Today, you can't tell if an average Joe is driving a Mercedes, or someone with lots of money. Sadly, leasing has taken the prestige out of driving a luxury car.
This is a fun series! I do notice that the photos do not always match the year. For example the Burger King photo is clearly not 1954 ...there's a 58 Ford Station Wagon and a 60 Ford Falcon.
I have seen a photograph of the first Burger King restaurant, taken about the time it opened. The founders had not yet adopted nor established the iconic designs and logos which would later identify the restaurant.
21 cents for a gallon of gas in 1954. Yet I remember "gas wars" in early 70's with gas as low as 19 cents. Pretty steady gas prices until the "gas shortage" shock of 1973-1974. I remember waking up at 4am and driving my car down to the local gas station and leaving it there and walking home for a couple more hours of sleep until the station opened at 7am. After that prices only went up....
Had to laugh - four years ago I was shopping around for a good used car to use as a beater. Was checking out one clunker at a Ford dealership and dealing with a young salesman/kid who was still wet behind the ears. We talked gas mileage on the car and I told him I was fussy about good gas mileage because of the Arab oil embargos in the '70s. He gave me a blank look and asked me what I was talking about. He never even heard of the oil embargos.

I was born in’54. Grew up in Southern California near Newport Beach 🏖️. Different times, a more traditional era. My Dad worked as a pressman at a local newspaper, my Mom was a homemaker for my Dad and us boys. The Ford Thunderbird premiered in October of that year (possibly why I’m a car guy?).
I know this is too much to even think of asking for, but this series made me want something that would cover even from the 1800's and some time before that as both 1800 and 1900's were both the centuries which shaped our society as we know today. I'll start looking for something similar to this content about those eras, maybe even documentaries and the such.
If this was supposed to be a photo of that year for the Burger King it is not. There are 2 Ford Falcons (60s cars) and 1 '58' Edsel wagon. I am under the impression that all photos in this series were taken during that year.
Interesting video about my birth year. One observation is that when it came to the part of Burger King, the photo would not have been any earlier than 1959 because that was the first year for the white Ford Falcon in the photo.

I think it's useful to remember that "under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance to the flag because we were engaged in cold war propaganda, and most people supported that. We were showing we were not godless, and it's why "In God We Trust" was added to our national vocabulary as well. One correction: The ballet choreographer's name is pronounced Balancheeen. Easy error if you don't know ballet. Try anyone on a ballet video speaking of the man if you want to double check.
Born in 1988. I wished I was born back in the 50s. That would be awesome to grow up and experience the 60s 70s 80s 90s. That would be a the best years to be alive in AMERICA. Then I could seen and experienced the best times in America. Back when men were men. Back when a look in a man’s eyes and a hand shake meant everything. Back when food was actually food!! No gmo No processed shit with red40 in it. Look how obese people are today compared to the 50s. Back when one man could work 40 hours a week and be able to take care of his family comfortably. Back when cars were $2000 new and built to last. When cars was made to where u could actually work on them urself. Back when a nice house was $50,000 new. Those were the times to be alive in America. Today America has gone to hell in a hand basket. Men want to be wemen. Kids wanting a sex change before they even know what they want to be in life. One man can’t comfortably support his family on 40 hours a week. Those same $2,000 cars are $70,000+ and those same $50,000 houses are $350,000+. I could go on for days. It’s sad times we are living in.
It cost me over $800 this morning. Of course that was 250 gallons of diesel in my Freightliner. When I filled my pickup on Sunday, it was "only" about $90.
I was born in 1953, growing up during those times are unforgettable and I wish all kids of today could experience those such wholesome times.

Yeah, Mostly retired doctors drove Mercedes back in those days. The Cadillac was the desired car.

If this was supposed to be a photo of that year for the Burger King it is not. There are 2 Ford Falcons (60s cars) and 1 '58' Edsel wagon. I am under the impression that all photos in this series were taken during that year.

Interesting video about my birth year. One observation is that when it came to the part of Burger King, the photo would not have been any earlier than 1959 because that was the first year for the white Ford Falcon in the photo.
Also, the Whopper wasn't introduced until 1957.

Lovely video. I was barely born, but some of these things are in my oldest memory channels. I think it's useful to remember that "under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance to the flag because we were engaged in cold war propaganda, and most people supported that. We were showing we were not godless, and it's why "In God We Trust" was added to our national vocabulary as well. One correction: The ballet choreographer's name is pronounced Balancheeen. Easy error if you don't know ballet. Try anyone on a ballet video speaking of the man if you want to double check.

Born in 1988. I wished I was born back in the 50s. That would be awesome to grow up and experience the 60s 70s 80s 90s. That would be a the best years to be alive in AMERICA. Then I could seen and experienced the best times in America. Back when men were men. Back when a look in a man’s eyes and a hand shake meant everything. Back when food was actually food!! No gmo No processed shit with red40 in it. Look how obese people are today compared to the 50s. Back when one man could work 40 hours a week and be able to take care of his family comfortably. Back when cars were $2000 new and built to last. When cars was made to where u could actually work on them urself. Back when a nice house was $50,000 new. Those were the times to be alive in America. Today America has gone to hell in a hand basket. Men want to be wemen. Kids wanting a sex change before they even know what they want to be in life. One man can’t comfortably support his family on 40 hours a week. Those same $2,000 cars are $70,000+ and those same $50,000 houses are $350,000+. I could go on for days. It’s sad times we are living in.
Oh boy, I wish gas was still that price. I filled up the other day and it came to $82.
It cost me over $800 this morning. Of course that was 250 gallons of diesel in my Freightliner. When I filled my pickup on Sunday, it was "only" about $90.
