- Jen Fulwiler is not cut out to be a mother. She’s messy, lazy, disorganized, and has no maternal instincts. A former computer programmer who once lived in a chic part of downtown, she now finds herself in the suburbs, driving her six children around in a minivan.
From the imposter syndrome that comes with people treating her as a respectable adult to the moment she looked at her backyard and realized her family just might be white trash, Jen shares her many mishaps as she navigates this life she loves but is not cut out for. She introduces us to the colorful characters from her world, including:
- her Ivy League husband who doesn’t want to work
- her Southern Baptist mother-in-law who uses Catholic saints to find lost car keys
- her children, who found some very unusual ways to get around internet security restrictions
Shot at The Riot comedy club in Houston and produced by Matthew Schuler, who has produced specials by Neal Brennan, Pete Holmes, and Mark Normand, Maternal Instinct will resonate with anyone who has ever found themselves failing their way through life.

Jen, my husband and I watched this special while I was in early labor with my 7th baby last month. It kept my oxytocin levels nice and high 😂. Our baby ended up in the NICU for 15 days and has some special needs. Every morning, before I went into the NICU to visit him I would listen to your podcast as I pumped milk for him. You always calm me and make me feel better! Your podcast is one of the very few that I can listen to when my life gets the absolute craziest it’s ever been and still feel better after listening. Thank you so much ❤

I've followed Jen since my senior year of college through getting married, becoming a mom and pursuing a difficult career in a male dominated field. She is basically my life coach and I loved this comedy special - even funnier than her sets that I saw in person in 2019 and 2023. Can't wait for the next one!

Last year I drove for like 2 hours after work to drop off my toddler with my mom and see Jen on a weekday. I had a job interview the next day. I got to go back to the green room because Jen is so good to her Patreon fans, and I probably seemed standoffish because I was so drained and starstruck at the same time.
The show was totally worth it! (Plus I got the job at the Catholic school my kids will be attending)

I listened to her radio show wishing mothers years ago were entertained by someone like her; read her books which made me smile and laugh; now watching podcasts and comedy shows which reminds all that imperfections
