Great win great video Courtney ive been feeling like absolute rubbish top recently i do think its this change in weather. Salah's goal was an absolute beauty. That ref though Montenegran Anthony Taylor/Mike Dean wanted to make it all about himself that Tsimikas yellow was a joke and i thought he was gonna give a pen too when Macca clearly wins the ball! FWIW, here's how the new CL format works, Courtney (might want to grab a cup of tea first):
Liverpool, like most major clubs from the strongest Leagues, qualified directly to the 36-club League Phase that is being played now. Smaller clubs from smaller Leagues had to play their way through up to 4 qualifying rounds. Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava, for instance, entered the competition in the very 1st Round and defeated Struga (N.Macedonia) in Round 1; Celje (Slovenia) in Round 2; APOEL (Cyprus) in Round 3; and Midtjylland (Denmark) in the Playoff Round to reach the League Phase.
The 36 teams that qualified for this League Phase were ranked 1-36 by club coefficient. (Real Madrid were #1 with a 136.00 coefficient; French club Brest were #36 with a 13.37 coefficient...Liverpool's 114.00 put them at #5. Slovan Bratislava's 30.50 put them at #28.
Teams in the League Phase were then divided into 4 pots. Teams 1-9 went into Pot #1. Teams 10-18 were in Pot #2. Teams 19-27 in Pot #3. And the remaining 9 teams in Pot #4.
Every team then had 2 opponents drawn from each Pot, one to be played at home, the other away. LFC drew:
#1 Real Madrid (home) and #8 RB Leipzig (away) from Pot #1
#10 Bayer Leverkusen (home) and #18 AC Milan (away) from Pot #2
#24 Lille (home) and #21 PSV Eindhoven (away) from Pot #3
#32 Bologna (home) and #33 Girona (away) from Pot #4
All teams compete in 1 humongous 36-team table, with each team playing a total of 8 games. After all teams have played all 8 games on their CL schedule, the teams that finish in the Top 8 get a bye to the Round of 16.
The 8 teams that finish 9th thru 16th are seeded in the next round, the Knockout Phase. The 8 teams that finish 17th thru 24th advance to the Knockout Phase, but are unseeded. The draw will pit the unseeded teams against the seeded teams. Seeded teams typically play the 2nd Leg of the tie at home. Winners from this Knockout Phase advance to the Round of 16 to be drawn against the 8 teams that got a bye from the League Phase to the Round of 16.
Tie-breakers in the final 36-team table will be:
1. Goal differential
2. Goals scored
3. Away goals scored
4. Wins
5. Away wins
6. Opponents' combined points accrued
7. Opponents' goal differential
8. Opponents' goals scored
9. Lowest disciplinary score (red card = 3 pts; yellow card = 1 pt)
10. Club coefficient
