    I don't think any version captures the tremendous weight of Beth's passing like this one. Every moment in this scene is just so poignant. Jo murmuring "Oh Beth, I'm not a great writer, I..." and Beth, with the utmost confidence and love assuring her: "But you will be". Perfection.

      Absolutely agree with you on that....We didn't feel the loss in 2019 adaptation as much we feel in 1994 adaptation.
      And in addition to it, the real hero in this scene was Thomas Newman. His music made the scene much more impactful...

      @@shouvikghosh8946 Agreed, I read the book before I watch the movie. However, when I first watched the 1994 version even if I knew Beth was going to die, this movie did give the audience hope that Beth will not die. You see how she caught scarlet fever, and how she got very sick, till the point, even the doctor Lawerance provide said there was nothing much he can do. However, in the end, you see her slowly recovering and getting better. She isn't laying in bed anymore, she even was there for Meg's wedding and was there for Jo when she needed a shoulder to cry on. Then the next thing you know she is sick again when you were so hopeful. Plus her final moment and words to Jo just make it more heartbreaking. With 2019, it didn't focus much on Beth, the question wasn't if she would recover like in 1994 more like when will she die.

      This one definitely captures the precious bond between these sisters, yet, I still love the 1949 Beth ❤ I do enjoy this version’s closer telling of the overall novel, though, for sure.

      It happened to my sister-in-law. My cousin brother was in the last stages of a very rare and brutal form of spine cancer and in his last days he was at home with his family. We all knew it was coming. My sister-in-law closed her eyes for only a minute or two and he was gone. He left behind 3 young children, his wife, his parents, younger siblings, nephews and nieces and all of us cousins. He was big brother, true friend and confidant. Miss you boro bhaia.

    Little Women is in fact based on Louisa May Alcott’s family. Louisa was clearly Jo, the tomboyish writer. Meg was based on her sister Anna Alcott, who married a man named John. Amy was based on Abby May Alcott (switch the M and A around), a very talented painter whose works are still preserved in the Orchard House. Beth was based on Beth, a talented pianist who did die of Scarlett fever at age 22, which was a severe blow to the Alcott family. They really did do plays for their parents and families. Their costumes are still kept in their Orchard house in Concord, Massachusetts.

      "My dear Beth died at three in the morning after two years of patient pain. Last week she put her work away, saying the needle was too heavy ... Saturday she slept, and at midnight became unconscious, quietly breathing her life away till three; then, with one last look of her beautiful eyes, she was gone." - Louisa May's journal entry in regards to her sister's death on March 14th, 1858
      I used to do Young Chautauqua, and Louisa May Alcott was the last portrayal I did before I aged out of the program at 18. Beth's death was the hardest part to talk about during the performance. When I did my audition for the special evening performances, I talked about Beth, and managed to move everyone in the room to tears. I was one of four performers chosen for that night, and they said it was because I was able to put so much emotion into that single story.

    I tend to over analyze things in general, but what I truly love about this film is the attention to detail. You wouldn’t be aware of the “small” things Gillian Armstrong has done without reading the book... This scene with Beth for example. I noticed she is sleeping on Jo’s old bed. Beth also has her favorite doll with her, Joanna. Earlier in this scene, it shows a bowl of fruit on Beth’s desk. In the book, John Brooke provides Beth with fruit she has yearned for, but was too expensive to buy. You can hear it if you listen closely enough, but there are crickets chirping in the background... Beth’s nickname was “Cricket” and there’s a touching, heartbreaking quote from the book that referred to the “silence and shadow” left behind once the cricket on the hearth stops chirping.
    I just wanted to list a few of the many reasons why this will always be my favorite version. Not only the top-notch acting, but the care and love put in makes Louisa May Alcott’s novel and this masterpiece of a film work as one. No, it’s not perfect... But it’s pretty darn close.

      Exactly. I find it frustrating that there are guys who won't watch it just on account of its name. Same with the book. Just because it was written for girls doesn't mean it's childish or overly sentimental. To me, it's a story about a family which happen to include four sisters, but it's about growing up and overcoming life adversities.

      stregadisalem you ought to. i thought it was very good. it wasn’t this, but it was still fantastic. the only thing is that it isn’t told linearly, it jumps back and forth in time, but once i got used to that, i thought it augmented the narrative. i read reviews that called the jumping confusing, but i think if you were paying any kind of attention to the movie, it was easy to tell the difference between past and present. i took my dad to see it who read the book about 25-30 years ago and didn’t remember much about it and he thought it was fantastic and the time jumping never confused him. so i would think book lovers would be able to follow it even more.

    I love Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and the 2019 cast, but I think Claire Danes had a stronger performance as Beth. I also think Gillian Armstrong (director) and Robin Swicord (screenwriter) gave more attention to Beth as a character which made Danes’ performance more impactful and her death more poignant. Gerwig seemed to focus a little less on Beth as a character and more on the event of her death, so to speak.

    When I was in first grade, being the avid reader I was, I found my family's copy of Little Women and read the first few pages or so. I didn't get far- I was an avid reader, not a talented one- but I absolutely loved the character of Beth. Since my name was Elizabeth, I quickly encouraged others to call me Beth. It was quite a shock when a few years later, already firmly stuck with the name Beth for life and no longer so much of an avid reader, I discovered that she dies. I then actually read the book. So that's the story of how I mistakenly named myself after one of the most amazing, profound, and melancholy characters in the history of literature.

    The almost exact same thing happened to me last February. I went to tell my mom and grandpa good morning outside my grandma’s makeshift room in a part of the downstairs of my house. As far as I was concerned, it was another day of taking care of grandma who was bedridden and just given a few months to live. I went back upstairs for a short while and came back down only to be told that she had died a couple minutes ago. It felt so weird to see her looking asleep but not breathing. Shortly before the undertakers came to take her body, I kissed her on her forehead and told her that I loved her. Though I never saw her again after that day, I never said goodbye.

      @Ktayjacks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’ll see Greta’s version... but no matter what, I’m going in thinking of it as “Little Women (2019)”. To me, when I read the book, when I think of the movie, this version IS Little Women. Not “Little Women (1994)”. Not the Winona/Susan/Christian/Claire etc version. This is THE Little Women. I could go on and on, but this is the only version that doesn’t feel like it was made in the decade it was in, y’know? I’m back in the 1860’s. I watch it, the music... UGH the music... and I am there living these coming of age experiences with Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. I am here right now experiencing the devastating heartbreak of letting Beth go.
      I don’t know... just to me, I know Greta will make a quality film. It just won’t be THE “Little Women”. And I think this version always will be.
