100$ is a lot, but comparing it to the Starwars sets, value vs price vs what you actually get I think it's a much better value
But, JP is my all time favorite movie and I'll probably pay double for this set. still worth it

I prefer the brick built T-rex. Having it be made with bricks just seems more in the spirit of lego creativity to me. Plus, articulation is always great.
Also, the proportions look more like the t-rex from the movie than the molded one imo. So technically it looks more accurate to me

I actually like the rex here, it's successful at being close in size to the molded version while still having a really nice shape and details. The only thing really bad about it is the neck articulation and the gaps in the tail.

If the had included the parts to finish off the second car, this would totally be worth the price.

  • @callumpears1523
    @callumpears1523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

Regarding only getting one spare even though the part was in 2 separate bags, I've noticed that with quite a lot of sets within the last couple of years. Even if multiple of a small part are used across several bags, you only get one spare.

  • @anakinskywalker4325

I do agree that both of the cars should've been fully built up or at least the one in the mud should've had some suggestion of an interior cuz in the scene from the movie when the tyrannosaurus is standing on the car and pushing it down into the mud both Lex and Tim are trapped inside the car and with this seat you can't really do that. I know it's not that big a deal and probably would've upped the price some more but for me that little attention to detail and accuracy would've been great. Other than that I think this set is phenomenal

  • @MichaelB-jw5po
    @MichaelB-jw5po 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

I think it's pretty reasonable that Lego didn't include an extra wheel for the destroyed Explorer. If they did that, then everyone would just complain that they didn't include the rest of the pieces to make a full second Explorer. After all, most people wouldn't have the extra pieces just lying around to finish the build if that wheel was included. I think it's much simpler for them as a company to just say "Here, you only get one complete car and one destroyed car, and that's what the set is."
Of course, it would be nice to have the option to build a second explorer, but then the set would probably cost $120, and it's already expensive enough at this price.

I made a comment a few weeks ago about the moulded v lego dino, and now having built it, I would say 100% lego dino. The build experience was lovely, and I feel more attached to the set than I would with just having a mould. I also love the look, the number of studs v SNOT really works in my opinion; the designer did an amazing job!
As for the set as a whole so far (I’ve yet to build the crushed explorer), the build has been fun and engaging. The dino was great but the explorer is my favourite part.
Jurassic Park has been my favourite film since it came out when I was a kid, and my love for it is intense (I know the dialogue by heart etc.) This set just brought back so many memories as I’ve been going through, and I have loved the experience so far. I would highly recommend it to any fence sitting AFOL JP fans. Break through that fence (the power’s off) and get it, you won’t regret it.
Looks great in person, will make a nice display piece.
The instruction manual is peppered with scenes and info from the movie, and it’s cover is a nice touch.

I just built this set last night, and I gotta say it was a real treat as a huge JP fan to see all the small details. I think the Ford Explorer is a little off looking but I think it’s probably the best they could do. The T Rex was fun to build, and while the gaps in the tail are a little annoying, I think my biggest problem is that the face looks kind of goofy at certain angles. Overall though I think this set is a great value (especially compared to those Star Wars diorama sets) and it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had putting a set together

Just bought this at the Lego store yesterday. Currently working on the fencing as the next part of the set.

The undamaged Explorer is a gem! Detailing is fantastic on it and the T Rex was a fun build.

I think the color printing issues can mostly be attributed to being printed on black, which is notoriously difficult to do, though I think they've gotten better over the years.

I'm on the fence with this one. I was in the right dinosaur-liking age when the original movie came out, but I'm not a super fan. I might pick it up if I happen to run into it on a good discount. Maybe. But I can say that if it came with a specialized molded T-rex, I would definitely NOT buy it. That would make it loose a great chunk of the appeal. But that's just me.

I'd personally really like to see a revamp of the tactics/parts used for dinos and other large animals, namely coming up with a few smaller but still substantial chunks that can be put together to make for a potentially more possible toy, and ideally make them in a way that they can be a little more widely used among various different creatures to hopefully reduce the sheer size and specificity of most of the existing Dino pieces

Great review, Jang! As always! This will likely be the first year since I got back into seriously collecting and building LEGO in 2020 that I will be getting any Jurassic World sets; I love the new designs and molds for dinos this year!
The debate between brick built vs molded dinos, or in this particular set the t-rex, I fall kind of in the middle like you, Jang. I also like the molded dinos, I like the way LEGO has designed and painted them. However, I also really like brick built animals, there is so much joy and satisfaction in making them and experiencing the final product. And when done well, they can look pretty fantastic. But for this set, I personally would have preferred the molded t-rex. Just because that mold for me is also so iconic and suitable for such a nostalgic set.

Compared to some Star Wars sets the price seems decent, especially with 4 exclusive figs and the brick built dino. A partial interior on the second would have been super nice, because Tim stays stuck inside the vehicle, he doesn’t make it out until the tree scene. I’m kinda glad this came out now because no way would I have been able to afford it as a kid, or convince my parents to fork out for it as a present! The moulded dino does look better in my opinion, but the lack of articulation would really hurt the displayability of the whole set.

With this set being a display piece, the brick build T-rex was the way to go. The molded one is a bit too toyish.
Strangely, I’m quite fine with the price. Of course, cheaper would have been better still, somehow it doesn’t feels overpriced.
Edit: I think I got why the price feels right: while being a display piece there’s still a play value. I definitively could see a kid have some good fun playing with that set.

As far as brick-built versus fully molded dinosaurs goes, I guess my main issue is the fact that they switch between the two approaches in different sets. I probably prefer brick-build overall, as it seems to invoke the essence of a building system like LEGO to a higher degree, but, honestly, I'm just a bit bothered by the contrast; it makes it seem like two different systems, when you get the same exact animal but using two completely different design philosophies depending on the set. I think this might just be a personal issue of mine though, and I do recognize that both directions have their own advantages and legitimate reasons.

I thought the T-Rex in this set was going to be significantly larger than the moulded version, so to scale better with the tour vehicles. So seeing the two next to each other, and the size of the dinosaurs almost matching, surprised me. With that being the case, I think Lego should have gone with the moulded T-Rex because it's consistent with the line and looks much nicer with the set. If I pick this set up, I shall be swapping out Rexy.

    For a diorama/display: brick-built Dino.
Though I’m just not a huge fan of the mostly-one-piece animals, period. It’s just not very Lego-like to me. I like specialized pieces to make them more life-like, but want them to actually be built, and thus more easily modified. The Elves dragons (and assorted other large-scale creatures) are about the perfect compromise, to me. CCBS would be another great way to have buildable but less blocky/square creatures. Or something like the specialized building pieces from the 2001 dinosaurs line, which I think is another happy medium between “completely brick-built” and “completely specialized molds”. If it were up to me, molded animals would be reserved for the smaller animals (minifig size and smaller) where building them is hard or impossible.

Actually, I like T-rex in this form better than molded one. It's Lego. We're supposed to build things.

If I get this set, I would probably try to buy another explorer separately and use the number 4 sticker from the sticker sheets

So the first thing that came to mind with this set is that Transformers just put out a two pack of figures for around the same price as this. It doesn't have 4 minifigures and a background but both of them transform and also I think the trex is a little bigger than this one, the ford would be around the same size though.
The Dino looks bigger than the creator green dinosaur but not by much, maybe like 80 more pieces? $30 is about right for him.
As with the Star Wars dioramas though, I just don't like the stand and the quote with it. I can't describe why, but it feels like they are adding $20 by making it more "collectable" and "presentable". I don't hate the information placard with all the UCS vehicles though, probably cause those are like a $2 tile with a sticker most of the time.
I would have actually found it kind of funny if they had a ford explorer placard with like the engine and year, but then include one for the dinosaur as well with like Hight and weight.

Got this thing on sale for $70, definitely a nice set for that price.

So I know I'm late to this video, but wanted to share a point about the tail articulation. If I understand correctly, the tail intentionally can only horizontally - the vertical ridges on the fossils found suggest that, especially once wrapped in muscle, the larger 60-70% of the tail literally couldn't move vertically more than a few degrees. I'd say this set AND the giant T. Rex model set both nailed this ratio.

I’m just gonna come right out and say it… “where’s the goat?!?”

Lego should make the bathroom scene where the T. rex eats the lawyer
