  • In this video I am in Pescina, an Italian town in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo and precisely at the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Marsican municipality is located in the eastern sector of the Fucino plain, along the Giovenco valley. The north-eastern sector of its territory is included in the protected area of the Sirente-Velino regional natural park, while the south-eastern side falls within the external delimitation area of the national park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. Talk of a cathedral in Pescina only began at the beginning of the 16th century when the seat of the ancient diocese of Marsi was transferred from the church of Santa Sabina to Pescina. The temporary seat of the chair becomes the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, already mentioned in a bull of Pope Lucius III in 1181. The building between 1579 and 1596 of the new cathedral dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie is due to the bishop Matteo Colli. It was consecrated on 6 August 1606 and in 1613 officially received the title of cathedral from Pope Paul V. The church underwent several enlargement and embellishment interventions in the following centuries until the last intervention with the construction of the dome between 1863 and 1865. This construction, seriously damaged by the Marsica earthquake of 1915, was rebuilt in 1930 and damaged again by the bombings of the Second World War. In the meantime the seat of the diocese had been transferred to Avezzano (1924), for which the church was given the title of co-cathedral. The building, rededicated after the restorations of April 30, 1961, was elevated to basilica of the diocese of Avezzano in 2016. The facade is divided in two by a stone frame. The lower part consists of an atrium punctuated by five arches onto which the three entrance portals, from the Renaissance period, open. In the upper part there is a double order of windows and a small late Gothic rose window. On the right side stands the bell tower. The interior of the church has three naves divided by pillars. Each nave ends with an altar of which the main one is surmounted by a ciborium and crowned by a semicircular apse. In this is placed a wooden statue of the fourteenth century depicting Santa Maria del Popolo. Three rooms face inside the cathedral: the sacristy, the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament and the chapel of San Berardo, patron saint of the city. In the latter, in addition to the relics of the saint moved in 1631, there are the tombs of several Marsican bishops: a plaque commemorates the names of the bishops with the phrase Hic quiescunt Marsorum pastores. San Berardo dei Marsi was an Italian cardinal and bishop, a close collaborator of Pope Paschal II. His episcopate was marked by his commitment to the moralization of the clergy and his concern for the poor.
    The bell tower of the Basilica houses interesting and fascinating bells in its parts:
    FIRST COMPARTMENT
    Campanone di San Berardo - note C#3 - cast by Angelo Mari in 1806 - jammed due to the manual impulse sound;
    Campana Media di San Berardo (damaged) - cast by Alessandro Marinelli of Agnone in 1858 - fixed jamming;
    SECOND COMPARTMENT
    There are 4 jammed and electrified bells for momentum and hammer touch. They were made by the Pontifical Marinelli Foundry in the Holy Year (1950) at the behest of the bishop don Nazzareno Baroni. Their notes from minor to major are B3, A3, E3, and D3, respectively.
    CORNICION OF THE SPIRE
    Small bell of San Berardo, recast by Marinelli and Orlandi in 1853.
    In this video we see the ringing of the festive Angelus performed on the 4 electrified bells of the second compartment. After the 12 strokes of the major bell, which strikes the hours, the ascending expanse of the 3 minor bells starts. The ringing was resumed on a Saturday in April 2022 at 12. All 4 bells were supposed to ring but the large bell unfortunately had a motor problem.
    Good vision!
    The use of headphones is recommended for more accurate listening.
    I warmly thank the parish priest Don Giovanni for the great availability and welcome he has given me.

      Grazie mille! In futuro arriveranno altri video ma non riesco a prevedere quando. Pubblico a piacere quando riesco a montare; non seguo una scaletta precisa.

      Ho fatto delle riprese col drone 2 anni fà e l'anno scorso ma per il resto non anticipo nulla. Spero prima o poi di riuscire a pubblicare anche quelle riprese.
