Spent time aboard a Canadian Submarine in 1972 while serving on a US Navy Sub in Norfolk, Va. Thanks for your hospitality to a fellow Sub sailor. Go Navy!
🇨🇦 🫂 🇺🇸
These 4 submarines were purchased for 750 Million Dollars (newly constructed the 4 would have cost 3 Billion).
And after, all electrical upgrades ( and even repairs of unplanned fire aboard 1 ), the bill still sat at 1,5 billion ( still half the cost).
They use the latest standard of Mk48 Adcap torpedo (same as US), but are equipped with Canadian Sonar (highly regarded worldwide).
Recently, one Victoria class patrolled the east China Sea and performed admirably (the presence of 1 extremely quiet sub stirred fear in possible adversaries, as it could be anywhere).
While nuclear subs do indeed have greater range and speed, the Victoria class (amongst other allied Diesel subs), are much quiter boats. You won't know they are there until it is too late.
The boats, and their crews deserve respect irregardless of the fact that they will soon be replaced.
As a conclusion, any and all US carrier groups are happy to have an upholder in their group, as they are extremely capable ASW pickets.
@mikemurphy2112 and your submarine experience is?
I think you mean a Victoria class in their group.
@@allannantes8583 both names are correct
Thx for the the brief.
@mikemurphy2112 and what do you base this opinion on?
Cutting edge 1980's technology. Far more dangerous to the Canadian crew than to anyone else.
Nope.
Been there, did that and sure got nothing for my time than repairing junk. HMCS Provider. 75>79.
Right!
Sorry how old is the F-16? F-22?
@@Nobber399 Don’t forget F-15…or B-52 (in service 70 years)! People realize these things get upgraded?
Sweden has the best one if a diesel battery is yours choice
Do not forget the German Class 212 A submarines...although not powered diesel electric, but by a fuel cell drive. They are considered among the quietest submarines in the world.
No. Actually they are looking for patrol submarines 😂
Nope, plenty of diesel boats use AIP. And no Sweden doesn't have a blue water navy
“Chee-koo-teem-ee”? Chicoutimi is pronounced “she-coo-ta-me”.
uh... it's a city in Quebec, and usually pronounced in French... in that language it sounds to English ears like: "She-koo-tee-me" there's no "a" sound in it anywhere.
@@petersilva037 You are correct and I stand corrected with my spurious vowel. Still better than “Chee-koo-teem-me”.
Computer generated narration...
A "drought" of 5.4 meters. I believe the common nautical term nowadays is "draft," though maybe Commonwealth countries will disagree.
Exactly. Was just about to comment on 'draft'.
"Drought" = A I.
Also spelled draught
I am a Canuckian and use Draft.
@@TomokosEnterprizeIn Canada, draught is the official spelling. But draft is acceptable as well.
The Brits wore them out and sold them to us for a premium. It's our way.
@@TomokosEnterprize Wore them out? They were hardly used by the Brits! Their British service life was short, with the subs being decommissioned in 1994. The first was commissioned in the RN in 1990, the last in 1993. Worn out my ass. Poorly mothballed? Maybe. Now was the Canadian takeover and getting them in service an expensive, poorly executed nightmare…you betcha.
@@davidkendall1614but they (we) finally got it right. They are a force multiplier in the RCN.🇨🇦
@@davidkendall1614 I'm glad there's someone here who knows what they're talking about. Thank you.
You clearly do not have a clue! They were commissioned between one and four years before the sale, at a fraction of their cost. They were near enough new boats, and state of the art - at least - for the time. The Brits were planning on building 12 of them, to replace the outstanding O class, until some muppet in the MoD decided to go with an all-SSN force.
Bless my country and Bless military everywhere.
These submarines don't look like that anymore. They've all been upgraded with new technology.
Yup. Brand new technology, they added two batteries for the starter making it 24 volts. Now it start better ( faint engine noise cranking but failing to start )
like nuclear reactors and missile?
I'm assuming that's 1 Billion Canadian? That's like $275 US? LOL! Just teasing, Canada... you're awesome!
Big thankx my southern friend.
At the current exchange rate. I’d say 259$…
@@historicbeef about &770 million
For fucks, It’s HMCS not HMSC! Guess editing is a luxury.
The pronunciation of Chicoutimi was pretty cringe worthy as well.
maybe next we should buy some sailboats with paddle wheels. good on them hitting a stationary target though. don't leave the screen doors open when you dive eah!
Well, there's 4 of those Victoria's class subs. But one headed Sonora domo smashed up. So who knows if it labber being service?
That would be Corner Brook, not to worry it is back in the game. Even fixed Babcock’s mess up.
HMCS not HMSC
Right!!!, I cringed every time he said HMSC. lol
Tim Hortons has more advanced electronics.
Il plonge mais ne remonte pas!...
😂😅😂😂
Oh look at the American sailor apparently on a Canadian sub
all the time in the shipyard
Interested in the 2.8l and internal boot and folded seat dimensions
👍
as Rusty as they may Look they are by far the best Looking Subs I have ever seen , While I do not know much about subs as long as the Hull is in Tact and not Rusting out is it not possible to Fix these subs up properly to make them sea worthy? why so many problems , design flaw?
No design flaw, just a lot of human caused error and a lack of funds to bring up to snuff. Much better now as they have received an injection of funding to make them last out to 2035 under the “Victoria Class Modernization” program VCM. Who knows they might see action in the SCS.
Our military is embarrassing and doesn't have the same capabilities as other NATO member countries. Sorry but that's the harsh truth
Lobby your MP to open the purse strings then.
There are plenty of third world countries with more military power.
Canada is a joke nowadays. Even worse, the "lea de r" IS a clown. 9 millions for an apartment in New-York with an handmade copper bathtub… 9 f king millions. For what ? For his friend.

Canada is just watch dog of back yard US 😂
Chicoutimi: shee COO tee mee
Lol. Nice. I thought we still had those damn Oberons.
The Oberons were THE outstanding conventional subs of the cold war.
Does maple syrup power it ? 😂
Yes. But don't tell anyone. Otherwise we have to start guarding our maple trees.
There’s always that one clown 🤡 YOU!
No. But it’s not horse power. It’s beaverpowered
@@historicbeefthat is putting beaver to a good use. The good thing about Canadian beaver is it can always be repurposed for a second life. It has spent too long being attached to the nickel where it just got labeled as a flat piece of tail.
Hauled out of storage in some estuary in Britain and bought by Canada. Blood and treasure in getting these things somewhat seaworthy again.
Nevertheless 12 new subs on the horizon for Canada. Australia is gonna boost their fleet even more.
Held together with dollar store cash glue..
Canada has Submarines?
Cool but we need 2 Nuclear sub we need to start playing in the big league not in the clown one !
2 subs? Whatever happened to the rule of 4?
I served on the O Class boats in the early 80s. The fact that we were the quietest boats in the world made for a big advantage in hunting big ass noisy nuke boats/ships. That and for use on specialized missions. The Victoria class are much the same.
The government just announced plans to buy 12 new Dielsel Electric Subs. The news has already greatly upset the Russians as the Diesel subs can be completely silent.
@@Caesar316 it has not upset the Russians. Don’t be daft ffs. We’ll be lucky to occasionally field one of those subs up north. Max one in the water on each coast at a time. If we have the crew. The Russians aren’t even our adversaries in our North. They have their own coasts to patrol.
Leader is a clown. What do you expect?
Lots of keyboard Admirals out there that know nothing as per usual. If you know nothing... say nothing.
euhh i though we only had wooden boats lol 🤣🤣
The biggest issue with these British subs was the Brits didn’t properly store them, for yrs before the Canadians bought them, salt water corrosion does terrible things over time, should have bought them at 80% off. Personally anything I’ve bought that was built by the Brits was a rolling piece of junk, construction and engineering is the worst.
You got them at 75% off. Which was warranted, given they came with various mechanical issues which needed resolving - and were.
1960s plus
❤
Hiroshima ,,, Nagasaki ,,, Moscow !
You are a sick puppy.
It’s my understanding that they have never left the docks for any REAL patrols. A 500 million dollar waste
They have done many secret missions, very capable & highly valued by the RCN.
@mikemurphy2112only one & that is being fixed by Babcock as they messed it up and agreed to fix it at their expense. They ruptured a ballast tank on emptying it with too much air pressure. That was Corner Brook.
@@allannantes8583 Did they agree to fix it? I thought it was going to cost more to fix than a whole new sub costs. Any link by chance for reference?
@@jeffhedrich3551yes just search user the topic corner brook. Babcock agreed to pay all fixed costs and negotiated for the navy’s budget to pay for some of the variable costs. It will require replacing the ballast tank with a new tank, that requires cutting the sub open completely. Babcock wants to do right by the navy. So much had already been spent on the corner brook already under the VCM leaving it as is would mean all was for nothing. Canada plans on spending $2.5 billion on these four subs to make them fully operational until the mid 2030s. Just type in google “can the HMCS corner brook dive without any restrictions” and you will find the article. Know this that initially Babcock repaired the tank and said they could not guarantee the integrity of its ability the dive to its specifications which lead to accountability responsibilities.
@mikemurphy2112 don't be a clown. Yes they dive
😮omigod 😮
Canadians have a submarine?
In the middle of the ocean??
Who's gonna harvest the maple syrup?
They have the new and improved internal combustion engines. They now make 32,5 beaverpower.
Are you sure they can work again
One has died in a fire crossing the Atlantic on its first crossing. All the subs were worn out. Great deal for the British, not so good for us eh.
@@TomokosEnterprizecatch up would you, stop spreading bullsh*t.
Faint engine cranking noise in the background : - Yup, this baby is like new…

"Canada's Salvation army and Military ". Nothing but hand me down old tech that other countries consider outdated and are decommissioned. Lol
Get some history lessons would you.
@allannantes8583 I don't need any. I've watched many documentaries on our military. Since the early 60's there has been a steady decline in Canadian military, navy and it's equipment. Maybe you should get some history. Ashat!
@@CitAcanadathere are gaps in your history on the subs we bought from the RN. The rest of the things you speak of as far as cuts to Canada’s military is sad but true. The electorate of Canada seems to think that social spending is more important than protecting what we have. Maybe they (us) have to be scared into thinking that anything worth having is worth protecting with a credible military. Let me know when you find the answer, please.
Did you have to plagiarize everything from “A Long Beginning”.
We could have built modern boats with the money wasted on these lemons. The Brits really gave Canada the 'shaft'.
Unfortunately, we could not have built our own boats, as Canada does not have the manufacturing capability.
What we do have are highly skilled men and women able to adapt to any challenge the ASW world can provide.
@@patrickharwood-jones2215we just have open up the purse strings.
Not true, do your homework.
@@patrickharwood-jones2215we actually did have the technology back in the 1970s as the hulls for the U.S. Navy 688 LA class nuclear powered subs were built in Montreal as per “Mark Norman”. As contracts expire you lose the capability, now we have to buy MOTS as we can’t afford the time to gear up again.
These boats were modern and state of the art. Any issues lay in the maintenance, especially after the crazy UK decision to cancel the 12-boat programme in favour of going all-nuclear, when diesel-electric boats are more effective than nukes in coastal waters.
Canadian here these subs are a joke and absolute junk waste of money .We live next door to the biggest military in the world government should bought subs off the Americans . Let's not forget the sailor who lost his life due to the fact of cheap politicians.
Remind me again what diesel-electric subs the US has built for decades? Like the UK, its boat fleet is all nuclear. For the same reasons.

A sinking offshore ship!!! Shame to hmcs bernays
Watch this and go watch the USA or Russia sub capability’s lol let it sink in sad put some money in your military for the love of god
Yeah ok, us and russian have nukes, tell me what do you hear with a stem plant and then tell me what do you here when you turn a flashlight on? That's the difference between nukes and diesel. Plus we also use the mk48
The sound signature of a nuclear powered sub is very similar to a school of shrimp feeding, they have advantages, but stealth is not one of them.
As lethal as a fishing boat. As old as a dinosaur. Shameful and disgusting.
Diesel/ Electric subs are still far more quiet than nuke boats.
Really? It’s quiet, it’s armed with the same Mk.48 torpedo as is carried by all U.S. Navy submarines, including Seawolf, Los Angeles, and Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines, and it has U.S. sensors, sonars, radars, and fire control systems. They are at the end of their life cycle and replacement procurement process has started, but their lethality is far more than you underestimate, as RIMPAC and other exercises against U.S./NATO navies have indicated.
@@davidkendall1614yes it is highly regarded.
So you think a fishing boat can sink a U.S. carrier, because that is what it did.
@@allannantes8583 Absolutely, if the carrier is a decommissioned carrier, with zero self-defense, that will be sunk to create an artificial reef.
It’s not pronounced drought, it’s pronounced “draft”. Canada needs to ditch its diesel electric submarines like the Australians and buy Virginia class nuclear submarines
Why not to simply say "depth"?
@@musa7010depth reflects how deep it can go underwater while draft is how much depth is required for the ship to pass through a shallow area without hitting bottom
Canada is looking at buying 12 new subs to replace the existing Victoria-class (ex-Royal Navy 'Upholder' class) submarines. It is not yet known if they will be nuclear or powered with conventional diesel-electric powerplants. Canada can't afford nuclear submarines, and the modifications the Virginia-class subs would need to suit Canadian operational doctrines and methods would likely be extensive and cost-prohibitive.
Plus, an entirely new training and maintenance infrastructure would need to be created. Before the Victoria-class subs were acquired, the Canadian Navy operated British-made Oberon-class subs, so the training and maintenance infrastructure for the new Victoria-class subs is pretty much a follow-on setup from what the old subs had.
got a trillion you don't need ???
With what money ? Trudeau spent it all on dumb things
It's 2024 and developed in mid 1980's...hahahahaha
The boat that never was, piece of crap
it's worth nothing
We don't have billlion dollar subs what a joke we have the left overs of the British Navy boats they won't use when infact we should build and deploy a new fleet of these at least a Dozen.
We should also be building a Navy with multiple aircraft carriers,Distroyers and Cruisers
The F 35s on order should be changed to the Naval Version and ships should be built to carry them
Canada should build our own interceptor Air Superiority Aircraft right now and all Future Aircraft needs.
We need to actually build an airforce as we don't have one and our Navy is a joke with a hand full of Frigets Support Vessels basically.
We have done all of that already(been there, done that and bought the tee shirt). We have now moved on to a woke society. Did you not get the e-mail.
lol lol entered dry docked and stayed there for 5 and a half years then went to sea sprung a leak and had to go back to dry dock then shoe caught fire like only been operational 2 years and now being retired lol
So you are saying HMCS Victoria is retired. Is that correct?
@@allannantes8583 no they are slated to be retired active process of getting rid of these for new boats even though these just started being operational
@@robertmaheu7583the real process of getting them into an active regularly scheduled maintenance program didn’t happen until we hired Babcock in 2008 to a contract and that was due to lack of funding by the DND. Submarines need a lot of maintenance by their very nature. They are now going through the Victoria Modernization Program in order to have them operational for another 10 to 12 years or until they have their replacements brought online with no gap in capability. That does not mean now being replaced or retired. We wouldn’t be be spending up to 5 billion dollars on them to give them a life extension if they are now being retired. The Australians are also spending 10 billion to give their subs a life extension until the nuclear subs arrive in the 2030s. Everything gets retired eventually but that doesn’t mean today.
Sounds like a money pit to me.
Hardly, do the math. We have made a lot of chicken soup out of chicken bones.
@@allannantes8583 umm if you say so. Mayhap ask your neighbor about there tax bill before you start making “ chicken soup”.???
@@kbbb4227maybe you should ask your neighborhood submariner how well he or she have been able to operate on a shoestring budget for decades? Our military has most certainly not been a money pit of the tax payers dollars, but the social safety net certainly has been.
