When in Kanazawa, plan for a day or two at a nearby hotspring. We stayed at Yamanaka Village and it's a beautiful, peaceful place to enjoy a great soak, and of course delicious, locally inspired kaiseki food.
I looooved Kanazawa when i visited. Not so much a touring city, but it would be a lovely place to live! The people are so nice and the neighbourhoods are adorable. Also, don’t miss the ninja house!
2:53 Welcome, Charles, you're doing it well. Next level videography as expected. When in Kanazawa, don't forget to take a walk thorugh the Higashi Chaya district northeast of Kenroku-en and alongside the nearby Asano River, where many local restaurants and pubs are situated. As Kanazawa is considerd a rainy city (in comparison to cities at the opposite coast), I'd bring an umbrella. Kanazawa station is probably the most beautiful train station I've ever seen, prove me wrong. Good work, keep me inspired (still miss you sam).
James Chicks chaya district is so shit, the narrow streets and architecture are very pretty but that’s where it ends. The shops are all the same and super expensive, selling pottery etc or very expensive sweets and desserts. Unless you’re willing to spend a lot of money, the walk through the streets is really not worth travelling there for. Apart from the gardens which are incredible, DO NOT waste your time going to Kanazawa. Omicho market is shit and so is chaya district. I would recommend a couple of hours at most in the city before moving on
Thank you very much! If you get to Kanazawa pretty early you would have time to do both the castle and the Chaya districts. Hope you'll have a great trip!
@@japanguide Thanks for replying. I will stay overnight because visiting Shirakawa-Go the first day and got free 2nd day before going back to Tokyo. Ok thanks, I will see if I can do both :)
Thanks and welcome to the channel! I'll probably be in a few videos, but 99% of the time I'm working as an editor :) Hope you'll enjoy the content! - Charly
For a night out, I'd recommend the Shintenchi bar district, which starts one block west and north from the Katamachi scramble. A street and a half of tiny bars, of which Pub Dylan is my pick. A friendly welcome with English-speaking staff and (usually) customers too.
Very nice video on spending a day there. Japan Guide made another video on the top 5 things to see in Kanazawa, which differed from this one since it recommended visiting the Samurai and Geisha districts. So I'm hoping you can help recommend a few things since I play to visit Takayama, Shirakawago and Kanazawa. Would you think that you could spend a day seeing the sights in Kanazawa, and then take one additional day to visit Shirakawago & Takayama? Do you think Kanazawa a good place to get a hotel and use as your home base? With the upcoming fall festival in Takayama, the hotel prices seem quite high! Since you got there by train, I didn't know if you came from Tokyo....I was actually thinking of travelling from Osaka to this region as it seems about an hour less, than from Tokyo? This is my 1st trip to Japan so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again for the great video. Wish more videos were like the ones Japan Guide makes. Great job!
Great, short and informative. We'll go there in march, and will follow the same route. NB: Please do not rise the volume on that pinball machine tune between talking, as it felt a bit overwhelming.
Having been wondering who would replace Sam, I am glad to know that Charlie is the new host since I was a fan of his 2 min. videos though I do miss Sam.
Honestly the castle wasn't my cup of tea... If castles aren't your thing I would really recommend the Higashi Chaya District! It isn't called little Kyoto for no reason! It is very traditional. Also, whilie in the neigbourhood. Try a cup of gold leaf tea or do a little crafts where you can make your own Gold Leaf Laquerware. I loved this workshop which is just a walk-in workshop all day long!
It’s an odd coincidence: I was looking up the gardens this morning and wondering wether it would be worth taking a detour there. Now I’m convinced! Where did you travel from (where did the train to kananzawa depart from?)
So for our trip we are deciding to take a trip outside of osaka for a day or 2. Would you say kanazawa or koyasan would be better for an overnight trip?
This itinerary takes a full day at an average walking pace. If you need more information we have all the details here: www.japan-guide.com/e/e4213_kanazawa_full.html

Japan has SOO MUCH to see!
I was in Kanazawa November of 2019 and this guide is spot on. Totally worth a visit, Kenrokuen was a highlight of my trip!

I live in Kanazawa. I’m 18!
If you come to Kanazawa.
You should eat sushi! I think kanazawa sushi is the most delicious in JAPAN!
