Nuclear Flask Traffic from Dungeness

  • Back in the 1990s, the nuclear flask train from Dungeness was largely handled by the ubiquitous class 73 locomotives using diesel power on this non-electrified corner of the Southern Region. Today, the Dungeness branch remains open from Appledore to sidings on the site of the old Romney Junction where the original branch to Dungeness left the line to New Romney. Atomic Waste is taken one mile by road from the Dungeness Power Station and is transported away by rail. About half mile of the trackbed of the branch has been converted into the main access road to Dungeness power station. This film was shot on a warm spring day in 1997.

1 min 30 in and in comes thd sight of our families station house, my father was station master at Lydd from 1964 to its closure in March 1967, we stayed on in the house till 1971 as my father then looked after from Appledore to Winchelsea till moving to Maidstone West Station in May 71, many many memories the station at Lydd was our playground, where some of film was shot was from the only bridge on the branchline.

Hello John, another great bit of history. I am retired now from the Railway after 41 years. I was a Signalman at Ashford IECC and sometimes operated Workstation 3 that controlled this area. If you had been 18 months earlier the old Appledore Box would have been controlling this area.

Hi Phil, I think there is some video of the old box that my mate took previously. I'll see if I can dig it out.
