Maybe my heating unit is too far away but, usually, it takes me at least a whole wasted pot's worth of water to bring the temp up... Otherwise... "I'm cookin' with COLD, baby!"
Feng shui tip: water and fire should not be on top of each other. Water takes away fire. So they are against each other. Best to put them far away from each other.
No dishwasher in my kitchen. I have a dual sink, but is a bit small for things like half sheet pans and my cast iron skillet. It's doable. For my 1950's small kitchen I opted for more storage and I have 3 children and a husband that help with dishes so it works for us. More storage for all my cake decorating supplies was a must.
We are planning our kitchen renovation now. I am dead set on 2 bowl shallow sink. I have done dishes in those deep 1 bowl sinks and they are back breakers! I can’t believe others don’t say that. Also, we might have things in one side of the sink and then it’s time to drain the pasta or potatoes. That’s another reason I like double bowl. So yeah, that’s my 2 cents on that.
Cathy- very good points! For how you use your kitchen and your needs those are very good points on the sink! I love a big, deep sink because that works for me! Form is great but never over function! Thanks for watching and your comment!
As someone who has worked in a bunch of kitchens, I personally dislike the big sinks so much. Also, it's one of the biggest reasons way most of my friends get behind on dishes because they are "hiding" all their dishes in the sink for later. A "smaller" sink requires you to processes more frequently, and therefore, your work never piles up.
I still prefer a two bowl sink as well. I will hand wash items throughout the day on one side and let them air dry on the other side. They are still out of sight- for the most part- when they are air drying. I don’t want to see clean dishes drying on the countertop all day. 🤷🏻♀️
I think it depends on the one basin sink. Some are definitely back breakers. I have had three spine surgeries, all failures. I love my farmhouse sink; my sink is shallow but wide. The reason I love it, I think it’s easier to wash cookie sheets, crockpots, large bowls, and all the things I don’t put in the dishwasher. I just thought I’d offer that there are many sizes. Check the depth to your height before purchasing any sink😊 My sink bottom is at my fingertips when I’m standing flat footed, which makes for a very comfortable yet deep enough sink.
I have also heard from plumbers that pot fillers are a nightmare, so I’m gonna skip that, because I am 60 and it’s safer for me to drag the pot over to the sink and empty it. Also one thing you didn’t mention is you need a sink big enough to put a turkey in! And you can always buy a plastic tub if you want to separate. Our renovation is in a 1780s circa home, talk about difficult!
I did a kitchen reno 2 years ago and you are correct about everything . I also opted to not have pot filler because it was pretty pricey . For countertops I did dekton (manufactured stone) and it is great! It doesn't stain, very resistant and very easy to clean. For storage I did open shelving and flat modern cupboards. I initially wanted shaker style but was talked into it by my designer and I am happy with them because they are so easy to keep clean. It took me 4 months with the arquitect to decide on the kitchen design because for me this was the most important room in the house and I love it.
Your kitchen sounds amazing and so modern! I love very modern design but I get intimidated to fully commit to the style. I’m sure your flat cabinets are stunning! And not collecting dust either! I totally agree that time and money needs to be invested into the kitchen - it is the heart of the home. Food, family and design! All my favorite things! Thank you for watching and for your comment!
I never understood the rage about pot fillers. Yes it’s convenient to fill the pot at the stove but unless there’s a pump to empty the pot you’re going to HAVE to carry the pot to the empty it in the sink anyway!!!
We spent over 9 months designing ours. Get it right on paper no matter how long it takes and spend the money on the design and blueprints. So worth it! Overthink things before you order them.
"Do it right the first time" are words to live by when remodeling. I had a conflict with my contractor who wouldn't run the cabinets to the ceiling (part of the original plan) and I have always regretted giving in to him. I could go on, but contractors seem to come in only two kinds: horrible or heaven sent!
That’s because the job of a contractor is challenging and no one really appreciates the amount of thinking and work that goes into things because they’re simply not used to hard work. So it takes a great individual all around to be a Heaven sent contractor.
@@katarinahinsey3931 My experience with contractors has nothing to do with being challenged. They don't like moving out of there comfort zone or having to deal with their own screw ups or those of the designer. The bottom line is get it done and talk your way out of any issues the client may have. Thankfully when we did our full house renovation we were able to do all of the inside work, save for the floors, tile and counter tops. which turned out beautifully. We did all of the plumbing, electrical, kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, framing, drywall and finish, including paint. We've seen some poorly executed work foisted on our neighbors during their renos that, thankfully, we were spared having to deal with.
@@oltedders you have to either be willing to pay top dollar for a decent contractor or do it yourself, and you’ve chosen the latter, which is great. If it’s to your satisfaction and holds up over time or improves the value of the home, there’s nothing better than saving that money by being a little smart and willing to work.
I enjoyed hearing your viewpoints. Good lighting is, in my opinion, one of the most crucial design requirements for any kitchen. A bright kitchen is necessary.
Currently in a reno & I was hell bendy on not having the refrigerator built in because I thought…”no one uses those cabinets”….now I’m going to build it in because it looks sooo much better 🙃
I’ve been on the fence about the pot filler bc it’s not really necessary. You convinced me! Thank you for the nudge. I was being indecisive and now I’m going for it👍
I think one of the most important design specifications for your kitchen is good lighting. A well lit kitchen is essential. Good under cabinet lighting, lighting that illuminates your work area/task lighting, island/peninsula lighting etc, are key. Consider how a light might cast a shadow where you will be working, will a ceiling fan cause a strobe effect.
Yes, 100%. Lighting makes or breaks the atmosphere and in a kitchen atmosphere is important in terms of presentation and being comfortable and awake while cooking or just hanging out.
You are right NOT TO GET the pot filler, those things will always eventually leak (according to my plumber friend). Just walk around and get your water. Saved you 2K!!!
IF having a pot filler, one should have a sink right under it. A)You'll want to flush the pipe that's been holding water since last use. B) You will also want to empty the big pot after cooking.
But both sides are so small. Always straggling to fit more than 2 or 3 things on each side. I'll be renovating my kitchen in a few months, and one large sink is the way to go. But modern one that accessories and multifunctional. It's about 400 on Amazon
@@shirazpervez2405 I agree. We are getting new countertops and I am getting rid of our double sink for a large single bowl. The double sink is just not practical at all for us.
I have little kids that don’t rinse there dishes and so I just have them put their dishes on the “dirty side”; then I rinse them when I can get to them. This makes it so I don’t have dried on corn flakes on everything 🙄. It think the farmhouse sinks too, but I just can’t do it!
First time seeing your channel. I read all the comments for input because I am debating about the sink! I am so impressed with the positive and non combative way you responded to the negative and rude comments some people left. That's real grace and elegance.
That’s so nice of you to say! Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I couple times I was a little snarky back, but I try to steer clear of engaging too much in that! Always better to be kind! And hopefully you found some help with the sink! People seem pretty split between a big basin sink (which is my preference) vs the divided sink.
Flooring. At my flooring store I tell people to take the sample home and drop some flour and dirt on it, and see if your ok with what sticks in the voids.
Doing a renovation this summer. The house was built with soffits (that did not have drywall behind them- insulation was blown in from the attic), but I wanted cabinets that are ceiling height, because I am nearly 6’, and my ceiling are only 8’,, so had someone take out the soffits and put in rough drywall. Doesn’t match the rest of the wall or ceiling at the moment, but will be covered by the new cabinets and crown molding when added, so not a huge issue for me at the moment. It’s only a temporary situation.
You are so On Point! I wish i would have listened to this BEFORE I started renovating my whole house. 😢I made several of these mistakes! Especially installing a jacuzzi that will now have to be torn out because it really is in the way of the rest of the house! 😭😭
Good tips! I am in the midst of a kitchen renovation and I think we covered most of these except the pot filler and the counter depth fridge (ours is in the corner-it’s just worked better for us). We are doing all the plumbing but we’re in your camp of us not needing it…why? However, in the spirit of pot filler……we are refacing our existing kitchen cupboards but adding more new - I wanted all new. The budget has been so steep it feels like there is little for aesthetic
I hope your renovation is going well! How has it turned out?! The cost adds up quickly! Make sure to pay for things that you can’t change later! But things like appliances, the hardware, the lighting etc can be upgraded later if you want! Thanks for watching and I hope you are loving your kitchen!
I asked people on a popular web site about pot fillers and the open shelves. Most said no, dont do it. Pot filler will eventually leak some said, etc. The open shelves by a range will get grease on the bottom from food splashing up. My sink is not too far from the stove, so not sure I will do the pot filler.
My thoughts exactly on the pot filler! I love the open shelving but it’s a commitment to cleaning and having only pretty things on display. We didn’t go for open shelving for those reasons but I do love the look of it! It’s just understanding the pros and cons and if you are okay with that! Thanks for watching!
I totally agree with you on a lot of these statements for the kitchen. Back in 2008 I was building a home. The builder was so incredibly difficult about my husband and I making changes to the kitchen. I wanted an eight burner cooktop and I was told I couldn’t get it because of venting issues, which were totally false. Then I wanted my cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling with glass doors with lights in them to showcase my finer pieces. He said that that would be way expensive and against code. The whole situation was a nightmare. I also wanted an oversized island however that would never come to fruition due to the fact that I was told that the weight of the new slab would damage the floor. Which was hardwood. After all the trouble the grief we ended up moving 2 years later. doors
This makes me sad! Unfortunately some contractors want to do what’s easy and what they are used to and your requests weren’t unrealistic but he made you feel that way! So sorry for that! I appreciate contractors that get your vision end do what they can to make that happen! Yes the price might be higher but if you are willing to pay then make your vision a reality! Best of luck with your future homes and renovations!
This is what we did. Kitchen cabinets were taken to a car body shop and painted with white car paint. We used invisacook induction stove. The cooktop is under a granite countertop. We went higher end with SubZero. These refrigerators run for 25 to 30 years. two compressors, and air scrubbers. This has cabinet panels. The big mistake is the pull-out trash bins. The tracks in every single one we bought has failed.
I’m jealous of the subzero! An amazing product if you’re willing to splurge! We have had our cabinet pull out trash can bins for going on 8 years now and now issues but over time it a a very heavily used cabinet and I could see issues down the line! Thanks for watching and for your comment!
I agree with just about everything you said. I am just about finished with our all first floor re-flooring (to tile) and kitchen and bathroom reno. Been a long staggering 2 months. And I am so glad I tried to fight with the up to ceiling cabinets, I didn’t win because it would have added weeks to our timeline due to customization but I won in the all wall, up to the ceiling backsplash. I also won in getting the quartz counter I wanted vs granite and I won in choosing the large modern kitchen sink with apron. The only thing I was against, which my husband suggested and I’m still glad we’re not paying extra is the filler faucet. Like you, we don’t eat pasta everyday. But the thought of the faucet fixture getting greasy from my husband the chef, frying steak or fish, overtime would drive me nuts. All great advice!
Your kitchen sounds amazing! I’m glad it’s coming together just as you want! I love people making their homes their own and a happy place for them and their families! Thank you for watching!
My thought on the pot filler is, what if over time it starts to leak. Second thought is here in the north it can't be placed on an outside wall or it will freeze and possibly burst in the wall.
I saw many people put their dirty dishes into one sink. If you need use, you need wash or put away. Double sinks one wash one dry. I don’t see your dry dish on your countertop? If you have only one sink, you don’t like to dry the dishes( bigger pan can not put into dishwasher) on the countertop, what do you do?
For bigger pots and pans I don’t wash in the dishwasher I just lay out nice dish towels on my countertop next to the sink to air dry and put away later. Or just manual dry and put away. Although at the moment I have a sink full of dishes but that’s due to laziness, not the utility of my sink! Thank you for watching!
Well let’s discuss about the sink… It’s functionality is not solely for washing dishes but to cook. I still want my sink to be double sink but the new double sinks now have the dividers a little lower so you could wash you baking sheets easier. I still want a double sink cause if I’m washing chicken on one side at least the other 1/2 could be used for other things. Double sinks would avoid me getting sick from mixing meat and whatever I’m doing on the other side. Also sinks should have round corners for easy clean up. I know that the trend is to have one really big sink with rectangular corners, but the owner of a kitchen cabinet store suggested to me once that avoid those trendy sinks as it would be cleaning up nightmares! Kitchen is really a personal space, you do what works for you and make sure it is functional. Sometimes trendy stuffs work but not just the one big sink. I still love a double sink! Dishwashing? Well you have a dish washer to do the work! Sinks supposed to help you wash your veggies and meat And etc…my two cents cause I cook! I know what is functional and what is not in sinks!
You make excellent points on the kitchen sink! And above all, as you mentioned, a kitchen and the rest of your home as well, should be functional! And everyone issues their home a bit differently, so absolutely make your home functional to your family and do trends that you like and that fit into that! Thanks for watching and for your comment!
@@christinalnelson my contractor just installed this double sink with lowered divider in the middle this morning I got from Amazon and it is beautiful! If you wish I can attach a link! I did have my cabinets white and all the way up. It is interesting that you mentioned we should consider having the backsplash all the way up as well. I will think about this. Thanks
The most important thing we did in our renovation was ask where we would be walking. We have a separate dining room, and there are cupboards with dishes right next to the dining room door. When dinner is over, dirty dishes are collected and rinsed in a small sink right next to the dishwasher. The dishwasher is also close to the dining room. Things that need hand-washing are washed in a double sink close to the stove and close to the cupboards around the stove, where they are stored. Cleanup is efficient, and we are not bumping into one another.
I cannot emphasize enough how important the big single sink is! You can wash a big pan with a handle flat in the bottom. Once you’ve had the big farm sink, you’ll never go back to a ridiculous divided sink.
Great tips! I love a big sink. I use some enormously big pots and pans; some are cast iron and can't be put in the dishwasher. Also some of the big electric appliances need to be carefully hand washed. If I was stuck with a double sink, I would have to wash some of this stuff with the garden hose outside. I am getting ready for a remodel and we are putting a 2nd sink in the island. It's nice to have options for people who use their kitchen differently.
Great tips! I will incorporate in my renovation. Interesting conversation about double sink. Definitely makes me think. I am thinking of keeping my stainless double sink.
Thank you so much I’m renovating my kitchen and I thinking about the cabinets and when I so your video I said I will take it all the way to the ceiling thank you so much
You are so welcome! I hope everything goes well with renovation! It can be stressful but I'm sure it will turn out beautiful! Thank you for watching Miriam!
what shade of white do you suggest? What shade cabinets do you have in the video? We're building our home and currently working on a kitchen, thank you.
I would do an ever so slightly warm white. It will give off bright white but not be sterile or blue looking. Mine are close to Dunn edwards creamy or Benjamin Moore simply white. Best of luck!
Interesting. Our Norwegian house was built in 1963, and we have lived in it since 1989 (34 years). We are finally remodelling our kitchen, now that we are retired, and have time to do so. The cabinets are home made in my woodworking shop from solid pine, with solid oak countertops and a table for two that is foldable and immediately in front of our kitchen windows, so that we can see the garden and wildlife (usually assorted birds, and some squirrels). Our ceiling is 8' (2.4m). At the very top there is enclosed perimeter shelving for long-term storage that is 2' (60 cm) deep and ca. 1' (35 cm) high. Below this there are 1' (30 cm) deep and ca 2' (65 cm) high units for more general storage. Below this there is a workspace using 2' (60 cm) wide countertops. Below this is additional storage, that is almost 2' (55 cm) deep. Throughout the kitchen most of the cabinets feature sliding doors. We have a double sink because it is more effective for food preparation. We wanted our kitchen bright and colourful, so the walls are painted in a light yellow. The sliding doors have an inner sliding door on the left in a brighter yellow and an outer sliding door on the right in a bright green. The drawer fronts are also painted bright yellow (left) and green (right), mirroring the sliding doors. The ceiling has white 2' x 4' (60 cm x 120 cm) tiles, while the flooring consists of 1' x 1' (30 cm x 30 cm) linoleum tiles in bright yellow. The splashboards are white. The appliances are also white, except for the black induction stove top. About 30 years ago, we replaced the original plastic handles with metal ones throughout the kitchen. These have been retained to give a sense of continuity to the kitchen. We have no desire to have a kitchen that looks high end or stunning, just practical and comfortable. Building a DIY kitchen costs less than a third one would expend on a commercial kitchen.
I love your use of color! That is so bold! I’m a black and white gal! I’m too scared to go for color! I’m sure your kitchen is lovely! Thanks for watching!
I appreciate hearing your opinions. It is always helpful to get ideas and to avoid pitfalls. I agree on most of the ideas you shared. My only comment is in regards to the sink. I chose to get the double sink because of water conservation. I thought that it would use less water to soak dishes in a sink that would get deeper, faster. I have a small side and a large side to the sink so the dishes do fit fine in the larger side. My other side of the sink is not as deep and has the garbage disposal. I sometimes put dishes to dry in that side.
We have slowly been completing our kitchen renovation and I agree with you on all of these points. We opted for a single basin sink as our old double basin actually caused a permanent warp in my cookie sheets because I couldn’t lay them flat when scrubbing. We are also opting to take the backsplash all of the way up because it’s easier to clean the splatter. My dad suggested we just header off the top of the cabinets but that little extra space is perfect for my seasonal platters and whatnot.
I’m sure your kitchen will come together beautifully! I love my big basin sink! And I like how you are making your kitchen to your preferences like with the cabinets! That’s what kitchens should be! Thanks for watching!
You are so right about the sink! I'm not sure who likes washing a crock pot or a dutch oven/pot in a divided sink but it is not easy. We are just beginning our kitchen renovation and a large stainless steel farmstyle (SINGLE BOWL) sink is what we're getting. :) I agree with cabinets or molding going up to the ceiling too. It just looks more professional - AND not dust will gather! Knowing exactly what you want and researching what looks best in your kitchen is key - don't get something that is so taste specific it will look dated in 2 years. Love your backsplash btw. :)
I totally agree about the sink! Your kitchen will turn out beautifully! Such good points you made! Thanks! I love the marble herringbone backsplash! Thank you for watching Sheila!
Hi Christina! Great advices. I am from Spain where the average kitchen fits on the kitchen islands that you showed on your picture :D But most of the advices apply pretty good. In our case cabinets all the way to the ceiling is almost a must to maximise space. The fridge, in our cage, we usually "blend in" to make the kitchen look high end, so it is camouflaged with the cabinets. Our fridges are usually smaller as we tend to eat more outside and to buy fresh ingredients on the market almost daily. I had never seen the pot filler in my life! Well, it's an interesting idea but, unless you already have water connection on that wall as well, I would skip it due to the huge cost that can be just to take the proper water installation on that wall, having already a sink a few meters a way (in our case it can be 1 or 2 meters away) :)
Thanks for watching Natalia! Your insights from Spain are very interesting and the cultural differences can effect how we design and use our home spaces! Thank you for the comment! Lots of love from America!
I tend to sear my fish and meat and it leaves "crackle? in the frying pan if I'm not making a gravy or sauce for it. I aways add water after removing the cooked food and then let it get hot and use the spatula to loosen it. It makes for easier clean up when it comes to putting it into the deep sink to wash. :-) Granted, I don't sear food everyday, but I do tend to steam the veggies. Bottom line to this comment, I think it depends. I don't think of it as just for pasta. However, perhaps I can use it to fill up my plant bucket to help keep it fresh. By the way, I agree on a big sink, otherwise, how do you wash and clean the turkey.
I like all your decisions.. except about the pot filler. You need to carry the hot water to the sink to empty it, so you are not avoiding a task. I have 42” cabinets and they don’t go to the ceiling because I have 13 ft ceilings. It is a lot of dead space, but I have a huge pantry.
I agree if you have 13 foot ceilings my advice about cabinets would apply! And I don’t miss the pot filler - my husband does though! But I think he just likes the look of them! Thanks for watching!
I have 42” cabinets. I still have the space above. I love to see the crown molding and have light accent with accent piece. basically, it’s the Open shelf concepts but not taking up cabinets space. I rather have more cabinets because I cook a lot have a lot of pots and pans, large dishes. I don’t want to see you so I keep them in the cabinet. The only mistake I’ve made in my renovation, is listen to designers I don’t know shit. You are the one who cooks in your kitchen. You know what you want, and you are paying for it! And paying alot for it! So if a cabinet like like should open to the right you make sure if opens that way! Stay on top of things. They tell you it will be ok but insist on meeting the designers and contractor and yourself before that last signing of paperwork!
Very good perspectives! And very true to stay on top of things! I am always nervous to speak up and correct contractors but better to do it right away and regret it later!
Lol! I agree with your double sink issue! Even if you wash your dishes in the sink a partition is not helpful at all it just limits the area to work on
Wondering your thoughts about having to have two ovens and/or two dishwashers in a "high end" kitchen. Planning a remodel and having problems fitting those doubles in!
If you have the space I say do it! I have double ovens and love it for hosting. a way to get two ovens in could be to do a single wall oven and then a range stove that has an oven also. I just have a cooktop and then two wall ovens. I don't have two dishwashers but I know that people that do love having both! if you host a lot or have a big family, its smart! Maybe not necessary for everyone! Best of luck with your remodel! I'm sure it will be beautiful!
@@christinalnelson Thanks so much for such a thoughtful response! I'm pretty sure that once the kitchen gets done and an occasion arises where having that second oven would have been useful I'd immediately regret not having done it. Appreciate all your helpful videos :)
I watched this video a long time ago and now I’m watching it again as I’m going through a kitchen renovation. I must have taken a lot from the first watch because we have done everything suggested in this video 😂
14 foot ceilings is an exception to my point of going all the way to the ceiling! But definitely take advantage of design with the high ceilings! with lighting or something!
I have a very large Kohler Riverby double sink and it is the best sink! For food prep, it keeps the food and dirty dishes separate. Plenty of room for big items
I have lots of counter space so I just do it to the side of the sink. But some of the large sinks have inserts as part of the design so dishes can dry on a rack in the sink. Kohler makes a great large basin sink!
The only one I really disagree with is the sink. We have one big sink right now, and we absolutely HATE it. We really really wish we had a double sink and that one one of the things high on our priorities for our new kitchen. Absolutely need a double sink. But hey, that's just us. *shrugs*
My previous house had a double sink and HATED it lol! So I guess this just must be a preference issue! I guess our kitchens should function for our lifestyles! Never form over function! Thanks for watching!
I agree about the double sink. It is a must for me as I am not always use a dishwasher and do not like to pile dirty dishes in the sink. I would rather quickly hand wash my 1-2 plates than keep it in a sink. I wash my dishes in one sink and put it to the other sink to dry so I don’t have to use kitchen towels. Besides, no one can see my drying dishes in the sink in opposite to drying it on the countertop and no wet towels hanging around the kitchen
I’m going for it. I’m actually putting my range where my sink used to be so adding the pot filler is kinda a no brainer since the plumbing is there already there.
I’m so glad you learned from my “mistake” (though I still love my kitchen!). I’m sure your kitchen will be beautiful! Thanks so much for watching - it really helps my TH-cam channel!
@@chemistryflavored so true about already having he plumbing- makes it so much easier and cheaper! Best of luck and I’m sure it will be great! Thanks for watching!
Hi Christina. I really enjoyed your suggestions,Thank you,l can’t help noticing though that your all units look low to the worktop…Positives,…Don’t have to reach up so far,Negatives…Can you fit a nespresso or toaster,or kettle etc underneath? Greetings from UK
I think it’s just deceiving in the video. There is quite a bit of space. They only thing I haven’t been able to fit under the cabinets is an industrial kitchen aid - but the standard domestic ones do fit. But I can see you’d want to be careful to leave enough room to have appliances to be most functional! Thanks for watching from the UK!
We are building and will have a black faucet and pot filler with white cabinets. Black and White Island. I’m not sure about the hardware for the cabinets. Rather brushed gold or brushed stainless would look best. I’m not wanting black hardware. What are your thoughts? Thanks
I love brushed gold and that’s what we did in all our bathrooms (but with black cabinets and a white marble top) and stainless steel is a classic kitchen metal and often matches with many appliances unless you’ve specialized those to have panels or different handles. But I’m not against mixing gold with stainless and black! We did stainless in our kitchen (mostly because my husband didn’t like the brass 8 years ago when we did the kitchen but he has since embraced brass hence the bathrooms!) I fear I’m not helping with your choice because I think both are beautiful! I’d say go with which ever your gut is telling you to do and then you won’t regret the choice. And I also reference Shea McGee’s kitchens when you aren’t sure which metal to choose or how to mix metals - she does it so well. She’s good and incorporating the metal into the lights or the faucets etc to bring it all together! So I’d say copy what she does! Best of luck! I’m sure it will be beautiful whatever you choose!
I have questions. Who actually uses a pot filler? And if you do, how do you dump the huge 5 gallon pot when you done? I have and love my double sink. One side is huge. The other side is still pretty good size and has the garbage disposal in it. I have a single sink in our log home elsewhere and it drives me crazy. What do you do if you need to dump coffee out while you are washing dishes? Some items just do not belong in a dishwasher( really good knives). About the refrigerator...is that pricy when you need to buy/ replace the actual unit? Where to source that?
From the comments I’ve seen in this video people are very split about the pot filler and the single basin sink vs double sink! I don’t care for the pot filler but it was something my husband really wanted. I could go either way on that one! And it only half solves the problem of casting around water! And as for the sink - I’ve had both and I hated the double sink! I think comes back to function and how you use your kitchen! And I do think the built in fridge is more of an expensive. Thanks for watching!
Nice tips! We just updated our Kitchen, it’s hard living 3 mos without a kitchen! But we went all out and everything retrofitting to modern appliances and cabinets. It’s worth it! Thanks 😊

With the no double sink idea is that also important for a kitchen remodel that needs to be done (because it's horrible & outdated) for better resale of a house?
Not open shelves!! Akkk!! Great for a restaurant but a mess, critter and dust collector for homes. I personally love a double sink. One side is dishes being staged for washing or rinsing before putting them in the dishwasher. I do this to spend time with my guests not to press them into helping me do dishes and the other side is still functional for another use like dumping out the rest of the old coffee and starting a new pot. You don't have coffee all over the dishes already in the sink. I agree about the fridge.
Thanks for your comment! Your points are something to consider in a person's kitchen design! It all comes down to what is functional for you and what you love. Thanks for watching!
I agree on the double sink. I was taught to wash on one side and then pile clean dishes in the other side until I was ready to rinse them. I'm not sure how I would do dishes in a single basin sink!
I have a pot-filler I never use. Even though we have a whole-house water filter, it's not RO water which we prefer. Now the seams of the faucet are turning green. It's also potential for water damage in the walls. Not to change the subject, but this house also has a ceiling bath "faucet/spout" - ooh, how trendy? It's actually ridiculous, and splashes everywhere. I NEVER use THAT; when I fill the tub by pushing on the control "button" with the hot water, sometimes the ceiling spout will splash cold water on me (even though I don't use it, apparently seals can disintegrate, idk what the plumbing issue is) > my point is extra water lines are a nuisance; next home I'm simplifying.
Love these tips!! I did most of these except the pot filler!! But my sink/ stove are literally separated by one corner cabinet! So there really wasn’t that need! I did run the quartz up the backsplash, but only since my parents convinced me since . It’s coming back in style from the late 90s!! They still have it in their kitchen.
Agree with you on the full height. I agree with you on the backsplash. Double basins only make sense for people that keep kosher. Get counter depth fridge if you want to stay on the cheaper side. Agree splurge on the countertop. Yes get the pot filler, it’s useless but it looks sharp. I would add get the biggest sink you can. I would add finish every exposed side with finish panels. Go big or go home on the backsplash.
You do get less fridge - you’re not wrong! I am just willing to sacrifice a bit of function for how it looks! But no wrong way to do it! Thanks for watching!
I have a small L-shaped kitchen that I’m renovating. Short end is the refrigerator. Long end has sink, dishwasher and range/oven. Is it a mistake to go with white appliances to make the kitchen look as big as possible? I’m concerned that stainless steel might break the continuous look of white cabinets.
I think all white could look really good and seamless. For the best look, I’d go as high end as your budget allows for because they usually have nicer esthetics than the budget options. If your style is modern, Samsung has a fridge and appliance line that has white glass for the front and it’s very minimal and is bespoke to your desires. If you have more transitional or traditional I love GE Cafe line! (Though currently hard to get!)
Best of luck with your remodel! My best advice is to speak up if something is bothering you with your contractor! I’m sure your kitchen will be beautiful!
I have never been a fan of the pot filler trend. You have to lug a heavy pot to the sink to empty the water anyway. I, personally, just fill my pot with a pitcher while the empty pot sits on the counter next to the stove or on the stove itself. I think, in the long run, you will be glad you did not get the pot filler. I have never quite understood why someone would want something that could possibly leak water or become layered with a film of grease over their stove. Because, eventually, everything breaks and needs some sort of repair. Better to repair a leaking faucet over a basin rather than over an expensive range.
What if you like you cabinets shorter due to your design style, I find that it looks more modern where mine is French cottage and I prefer it this way ! 💋
I completely agree with you! My style is on the modern side and my tips reflect that. But a more traditional or cottage style may have other preferences! Thank you for your comment!
Disagree on the pot filler. Have one now (was already in when we purchased) and only use it to soak dirty pots NOT for cooking. Unless you are using it multiple times a day, the water just sits in the pipes. At best that will result in odd taste and at worst a bacteria issue.
Agreed! That’s why I didn’t want one! My main point was to emphasize that you should do what you really hope and dream for and don’t choose the easier or cheaper option because you’ll end up compromising your vision on every decision and end up with a kitchen (or bathroom or anywhere!) that you don’t love and that’s what I want people to avoid! The pot filler was just the example of that! Since my husband loves them! Practical or not! Thanks for watching!
Great video. I appreciate all of these suggestions. I definitely will be incorporating some of your ideas as I start to re design my kitchen. Do you have a video where you suggest certain cabinet conveniences? Thanks
I don’t have a video on that topic - but I love door cabinets that have internal drawers. I also prefer drawer cabinets over just door cabinets that don’t have internal drawers. We also did a spice rack drawer and a drawer that holds baking sheets. And we also did built in garbage/recycling drawer. Those would be my suggestions. But also consider what things you find useful and incorporate those into your cabinets! Everyone uses their space differently! Thanks for watching and I’m glad you found this video helpful.
Love these tips. Redoing my kitchen right now. No pot filler though, the sink is so close and I dont like the look with smaller ranges. Great if your cooktop is 36 inch or more. I spend my days inspecting restaurants so I was sure torn but I'm so old...... fashioned. I love to display beautiful vases with dust collecting silk hydrangeas at the kitchen corners on the upper cabinets and other weird eye catching trinkets. Perhaps and ode to my grandmother. Ps Love the out takes! Perhaps a pot filler in another year when I add the mini snack bar and water line to my new larger living room. Shared wall so it will work.
Thank you so much for your comment! And your points are very fair points! Sometimes the pot filler isn’t really necessary or doesn’t quite look right. And I love that you make your kitchen to what you love and makes you remember your grandmother. Thanks for watching! It really helps my channel!
Yes I agree! For ceilings that are slopped or vaulted I would go with as tall of cabinets as you can - like up to spot where it begins to pitch up. But this would only really work if the sloping starts at around max 10 feet. If you had a ceiling in the kitchen that is like two story and the sloping starts much higher I would just do them to the height of around 10 feet still -maybe higher for the right design or house but it could start looking strange to have such tall cabinets! I hope that helps! And this is just my opinion of course!
My sink is the brand Blanco - it is a granite composite- mine is white and I do regret choosing white because it stains easily and I have to bleach it often - I think a dark gray or black would have been better. The width is 30.5 in, length 17.5 in, and depth 9 in
Yes to one big sink, but my kitchen is small, and counter space is limited, so I highly recommend one of those dish racks that you can put over the sink for the dishes to dry right over the sink. (I hate dishwashers.)
The newer energy saving dishwashers seem to take forever to run a cycle, then more time for drying. So I typically just use the dishwasher as a drying rack, helps keep the counters clear.
@@christinalnelson I agree about handwashing the dishes. Dishwashers don't seem to get the dishes clean enough without you handwashing them first anyway,. Menards sells the rack. You can probably order one online if there is no store near you.
@@UserError7861 I just always keep my racks spread above the sink. I can set pots on them when I need to fill them with water, and the water flows right through the racks when I'm washing dishes. Love those racks. Such a convenience.
Mr. Clemens, I’m not an expert on that - I don’t mean build it in so tight that there is no air flow - just enough to make it look purposeful with the cabinets and intended for the space. I hope that helps! But I would say to look at what the recommendations for your fridge model are from the manufacturer. Thanks for watching.
Our kitchen has 11 ft ceilings; we have 36” cabinets, plus a smaller cabinet above. That still leaves plenty of space, but this is our retirement home. I cannot imagine adding or swapping out the topmost cabinets & trying to access them at age 70. What do you recommend for kitchens with taller than 9 ft ceilings?
If you have very tall ceilings I don’t think it’s reasonable or necessary to extend the cabinets to the ceiling. I would just want to make sure the cabinets looked substantial enough in the wall. If the cabinets are teeny tiny on a wall with tall ceilings they will look so small. So it’s about proportions in my opinion! Thanks for watching!
We place items rarely used in the top cabinets. I have a sturdy step ladder to access. Only use ladder when someone is with you, if you live alone. I am 65 years old and have high ceilings in the kitchen with cabinetry to the top. The space between cabinet and ceiling will collect dust.
I just plumbed in my pot filler. $35 of copper from HD and 2hrs of sweating pipe. The only reason you can’t put it in after the backsplash is you need to install wood blocking behind the drywall . I’d just bust out that tile and do it your self.
We had the opportunity to put it in when we did the remodel - all the walls were open - we just opted not to but my husband slightly regrets it. But a very good point about how if you want to do certain projects they need to be done before tile is up or it’s a lot more difficult and expensive. Where as changing pint color and a light fixture is a much easier project after the fact. Thanks for watching Blake!
Love these tips! I did all of them except the pot filler, I didn’t mind it because My stove is close to the sink, however as I get older and it gets harder to lift heavy pots, I do think it would be nice. 👏🏻👏🏻
I loved your mistakes. I have an old farm house did Ikea cabinets they go almost to the ceiling Should I put up crown molding to make them go to the ceiling? I did butcher block counters and a 37" Farm sink. I love, love the sink. I love how big it is and it is Ikea for $129. I couldn't believe the quality.
I love butcher block! So beautiful and economical! I can’t answer your question about going to the ceiling- all depends on how big the space is and rest of the kitchen. But generally I like when the cabinets go to the ceiling, but every home and kitchen is different! Thanks for watching!
No sure - I’m guess standard or slightly deeper - we have a big space and big kitchen and my husband is tall so we did everything a bit bigger and higher for him to easily use. Thanks for watching!
I have mixed feelings on both! I have a granite composite sink which I love and hate! I love how deep and big it is, but I got a white one and it does stain so i have to bleach it often, also it claimed to basically be indestructible but mine has a couple small gashes. So I’m not sure about that! The brand I have is Blanco. Stainless steel is easy to clean but can also scratch easily. So it’s just weighing out the pros and cons. If I could do it again I would get the granite composite but in a black color so the staining wouldn’t show. But there is also porcelain to consider too! Best of luck with your choice!
What is your opinion on the pot filler? Team for or team against!?
Team for!
Against the pot filler, but agree with all of your other points, in fact my kitchen is being built right now and I've done all of them.
I love the pot filler and should have added it. This is months later that I can totally see doing this!
Certainly in older homes a dishwasher isn’t always an option! But if you have some helpers, who needs one! Thanks for watching!
Mine came with a smaller sink insert that I pull out when I need it and put away when I don't (which is most of the time).
Wow! 1780s! I'd love to see what you've changed and what you've kept original! I'm sure its amazing! Thanks for watching.
Okay but not really. Vegetarians and vegans don’t need that, although I have bathed a rescue chicken in the sink.
Very sound advice! Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching!
Amazing advice! So true! Thanks for your comment!
That’s because the job of a contractor is challenging and no one really appreciates the amount of thinking and work that goes into things because they’re simply not used to hard work. So it takes a great individual all around to be a Heaven sent contractor.
@@katarinahinsey3931
My experience with contractors has nothing to do with being challenged.
It's your money. Spend it how you WANT... he's still getting paid!
I enjoyed hearing your viewpoints. Good lighting is, in my opinion, one of the most crucial design requirements for any kitchen. A bright kitchen is necessary.
So true! Great lighting and a bright kitchen is a must! Thanks so much for watching!
The pot fillers are a personal choice. I think they are unsightly. Your kitchen looks beautiful and clean without it.
Thank you! I agree! I appreciate you watching!
Currently in a reno & I was hell bendy on not having the refrigerator built in because I thought…”no one uses those cabinets”….now I’m going to build it in because it looks sooo much better 🙃
It costs a bit more but I think it looks so nice this way!
I’ve been on the fence about the pot filler bc it’s not really necessary. You convinced me! Thank you for the nudge. I was being indecisive and now I’m going for it👍
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching Emily!
So true! I didn't even think of this! Thanks for sharing and watching!
So true. I wish I would have done it
Totally agree with this!
I’m always happy to save some money and future headache! Thanks for watching!
IF having a pot filler, one should have a sink right under it. A)You'll want to flush the pipe that's been holding water since last use. B) You will also want to empty the big pot after cooking.
I agree with everything except the sink. I love and need a double sink. It's not a fashion statement, but it's super practical.
That’s a good point! And homes and especially kitchens should be functional out what’s the point! Thank you so watching!
Is not, it was the first thing I ripped off from my kitchen, you can only put 3 plates and that's it. I hate double sink
We opted to take our kitchen backsplash up and around the window. It creates visual appeal and a sense of flow. I agree with you on this option.
I’m sure it looks amazing! I love tile that has some drama and continues around the kitchen! Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Flooring. At my flooring store I tell people to take the sample home and drop some flour and dirt on it, and see if your ok with what sticks in the voids.
That’s a great tip! And getting a sample and seeing how it works in your space is great a great idea! Thanks for watching!
I’m sure the renovations will turn out great! Annoying to move soffits but many times a good decision!
You are so On Point! I wish i would have listened to this BEFORE I started renovating my whole house. 😢I made several of these mistakes! Especially installing a jacuzzi that will now have to be torn out because it really is in the way of the rest of the house! 😭😭
Oh no! Renovating is hard and we all make some mistakes and regrets! I am sure your home is lovely! Thank you for watching!
Wow! a lot of great content. Side note: your choice of blouse is very distracting and takes away from your message on good design.
Thanks for the tip!
I think she say you look so good on it, thank you for the ideas
I’m doing a remodel right now. Cabinets going in even as I write! I avoided ALL the mistakes! Yay!!

Good point about the filler faucet. Husbands rarely think ahead about cleaning, I wonder why 🤔
Sinks supposed to help you wash your veggies and meat
And etc…my two cents cause I cook!
Thanks
I agree. I'm a cook, and the double sink works best for me!
Yes that flow in the kitchen is so important especially if you host and cook! Your kitchen sounds amazing! Thanks for watching!
Excellent points! Very good advice!!!
Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!
I cannot emphasize enough how important the big single sink is! You can wash a big pan with a handle flat in the bottom. Once you’ve had the big farm sink, you’ll never go back to a ridiculous divided sink.
Thank you! I hate the double sinks so much.
th-cam.com/video/zD-qjt141ws/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely! Fabulous for bathing babies too.
@@kjeanne249 I still bathe my 3 almost 4 year old in the sink! Very functional hahah
Thanks for watching and best of luck with your remodel!
Great tips! I will incorporate in my renovation. Interesting conversation about double sink. Definitely makes me think. I am thinking of keeping my stainless double sink.
I happy my video was helpful! Thank you for watching!
I was so skeptical when I clicked on this video but your perspective is so helpful!
Thank you very much! I’m always happy to convince a skeptic! Best of luck with your kitchen.
I followed your advice here and took the tile all for the whole wall all the way up and down. Very good advice!!!
Ashlee, Oh my goodness! I’m so happy to hear this! And I’m so happy you love it! I’m sure it’s gorgeous! 😍😍
Thank you and thanks for watching! I think doing what is most functional for you and your kitchen is always best! Thank you for your comment Irma!
Amazon has these double sinks with lowered dividers so you could wash those cooking sheets too. Double sinks to me is more functional.
THANK YOU!!! I have a small kitchen and I hate all that wasted space above my cabinets. I don’t hate it enough to remodel…yet, but one day soon.
You’re welcome!
Actually have a friend who has a pot filler and hates it because the water is never fresh since it doesn’t get used often enough.
That is such in interesting point! I hadn't thought of the water just sitting there in the pipes!
Im 5'1', and I'm now all about pull down shelves, like Rev-a shelf. Its expensive, but sooo nice to get things from the upper shelves.
That’s a great idea! Thanks for watching!
I never thought of the cabinets going all the way up now it’s on my list.
It’s a bit more of an expense but I think it makes such a difference! Looks very custom and high end!
Great video. I wonder about pot fillers, though, with induction ranges. Water and electricity seem like they shouldn't go together...
Usually that’s a bad combo! I’m not sure!
Even if you wash your dishes in the sink a partition is not helpful at all it just limits the area to work on
Yes! My thoughts exactly!
Exactly!
I’m so glad to hear it! I’m sure your kitchen looks amazing Amanda!
So.. I have 14foot ceilings? Not practical to put cabinets to my ceiling. How would you reach them? A 12 foot ladder.
Love a huge sink! Thanks for watching!
Hi Christine
If I get a big sink where does dish rack goes? Not every thing or all the time we use dishwasher!
Thx
I much prefer one big sink. I've had both. The big one worked best for me.
Definitely two!! it's a matter of preference. Is not a mistake.
I agree with the double sink. There is no way I would have a single bowl sink.
You just convinced me on the pot filler. I am in remodel phase and want the pot filler, but trying to justify the cost. I am doing it!!!

Always had double sink. With one big sink i would put some kind of tub inside to keep from overfilling wash water while rinsing.
That’s a good idea! Thanks for watching!
GOOD JOB!! VERY HELPFUL TIPS!!
I am glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching and checking out my channel Acqullia!
@@christinalnelson Thanks for your thoughts. It does help. I appreciate it. I will also check out Shea McGee
I agree with cabinets that go up to the ceiling. A must!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
I completely agree with the first part; cabinets that don't reach the ceiling just end up becoming dust and grease-catchers on the top.
So true and basically impossible to reach to clean on top of them! Thanks for watching!
Thanks 😊
I’m sure it looks beautiful! Thanks so much for watching! Helps my channel out!

With the no double sink idea is that also important for a kitchen remodel that needs to be done (because it's horrible & outdated) for better resale of a house?
It doesn’t need to be done, but a beautiful big sink is important when doing a remodel! Thanks for watching!
I love that, simplifying! Such good points you made! Thank you for your comment and for watching!
Your kitchen sounds beautiful! Isn’t it crazy how trends come and go and then come back again?! Thanks so much for watching!
I agree about the counter depth fridge! Once our fridge gives out that is what we will do! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I agree with everything except the counter depth refrigerator.where you get less for more money.
@@christinalnelson Thank you so much for the advice! It makes sense to go as high-end as possible. I appreciate the quick response too!
Woah. This video blew my mind. I didn’t even know pot fillers existed!!! Great tips thank you!!

I just made a contract for my kitchen remodeling I am very excited and I need all the advice I can get.
Very good point! I’ve saved myself some future hassle and money! Thanks for watching!
Definitely agree about taking cabinets to the ceiling. The stacked cabinet look with glass, like you have, looks amazing.
Thank you so much! A bit more of an expense in a renovation but really makes a big difference for a grand kitchen! Thank you for watching!
I agree 1000% with everything you said , im literally fighting tooth and nails with some clients about every single thing you mentioned
Sometimes people can’t see the vision and that these small investments really pay off on the final product! Thanks for watching!
My ceiling slopes, what do you suggest instead of taking it all the way up. Because it would definitely look crazy lol
Absolutely agree with every word you said about the sink.
Thanks for watching!
Christina, please let me know the size of your single sink and the material you chose. Thanks
I have a dishwasher but most of the time I like to handwash my dishes, its therapeutic for me! I need to check out that drying rack!
The newer energy saving dishwashers seem to take forever to run a cycle, then more time for drying. So I typically just use the dishwasher as a drying rack, helps keep the counters clear.
I agree. That’s what I got by Ruvati. Search YT. I love my new sink. I’d get the super extended one if I had the space.

QQ, when building in a fridge. Is that going to damage the fridge? The manufaturer advises to leave space on the sides, back and top? Thanks.
I'd keep in mind that refrigerators are getting taller and wider. You will be stuck to that one size if you have a growing family!
You were spot on!
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Love these tips! I did all of them except the pot filler, I didn’t mind it because My stove is close to the sink, however as I get older and it gets harder to lift heavy pots, I do think it would be nice. 👏🏻👏🏻
I guess as we get older we will have to stop eating pasta so no more filling up heavy pots! Thanks for watching!
Why not take a boiled kettle to the stove - it would be lighter and easier.

How deep are your cabinets? I also did white cabinets with black granite.
No sure - I’m guess standard or slightly deeper - we have a big space and big kitchen and my husband is tall so we did everything a bit bigger and higher for him to easily use. Thanks for watching!
"Why did they choose that granite?" Lol I know right. Kinda my thoughts on that shirt too.
Snarky! And it’s a dress, by the way.
@@christinalnelsonthey’re miserable. I love the dress on you. Very flattering 🤍
We are in the process of choosing kitchen sinks and what’s your advice about a granite composite sink vs stainless steel?
I have mixed feelings on both! I have a granite composite sink which I love and hate! I love how deep and big it is, but I got a white one and it does stain so i have to bleach it often, also it claimed to basically be indestructible but mine has a couple small gashes. So I’m not sure about that! The brand I have is Blanco. Stainless steel is easy to clean but can also scratch easily. So it’s just weighing out the pros and cons. If I could do it again I would get the granite composite but in a black color so the staining wouldn’t show. But there is also porcelain to consider too! Best of luck with your choice!
@@christinalnelson thank you for the advice about chipping and staining of the granite composite- none of the internet article mentions this
