  • Watchet, located in the county of Somerset, is a picturesque harbor town that is definitely worth a visit. Here are some reasons why:
Natural beauty: Watchet is situated in a stunning location along the coast, surrounded by rolling hills and quaint countryside. The town is nestled between the sea and the West Somerset Railway, which adds to its charm.
History: Watchet has a rich history, dating back to the Viking era. The town's harbor was an important trading post in the 19th century, with ships carrying goods like iron, timber, and coal from South Wales. Visitors can learn about this history by visiting the Watchet Museum, which has exhibits on the town's maritime heritage and the surrounding area.
Attractions: Watchet has a number of attractions to keep visitors entertained. The most popular is the West Somerset Railway, a steam-powered train that runs through the town and surrounding countryside. The railway is a great way to see the area and is popular with families. Other attractions include the Watchet Boat Museum, the Esplanade and Pebbles Tavern, where you can enjoy the views and the town's historic harbor.
Music and Arts: Watchet is also a hub for music and arts, with regular concerts, festivals and exhibitions taking place in the town throughout the year. The annual Watchet Music Festival, which takes place in August, is one of the largest events in the area and attracts people from all over the country.
Outdoor activities: For those who enjoy outdoor activities, Watchet is a great place to visit. The town has a number of walking trails and coastal paths, including the Coleridge Way which takes you through stunning countryside to the nearby village of Nether Stowey, where the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge once lived. Additionally, the town is close to Exmoor National Park, which offers even more opportunities for hiking, cycling, and exploring the great outdoors.
In summary, Watchet is a charming town with a lot to offer visitors. Whether you are interested in history, nature, arts or outdoor activities, there is something for everyone. With its stunning location, rich history, attractions and activities, Watchet is definitely worth a visit.
There are many great attractions to see in Watchet, Somerset, but here are three that you should definitely check out:
West Somerset Railway: The West Somerset Railway is a must-see attraction for train enthusiasts and anyone who loves scenic views. This steam railway runs from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard, passing through Watchet on the way. The railway is over 20 miles long and takes you through stunning countryside, making it a great way to see the area.
Watchet Boat Museum: The Watchet Boat Museum is a small but fascinating museum that showcases the history of boats and shipping in the area. The museum is located in a former sail loft and features a collection of boats, including a restored boat that was used to transport iron ore from South Wales.
Coleridge Cottage: Just a short drive from Watchet is Coleridge Cottage, the former home of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The cottage is now a museum and features exhibits on Coleridge's life and works. You can also take a stroll along the Coleridge Way, which takes you through stunning countryside and past other locations associated with the poet.
These three attractions offer a great mix of history, culture, and natural beauty and are sure to give you a memorable experience of Watchet and its surroundings.

T'were a windy night in two thousand and ten
I were blown to the west and then westwards again.
I landed in Watchet, a right proper job
Fearing the locals would eye up the hob.
Daft buggers they were but kind all the same
So now Watchet's my home and Derek's my name.

I've stayed in Watchet, for my 2019 holiday in Somerset, which I slept in Swain House B&B (over the road from the West Somerset Hotel and that sort of area,it's the building with the grey sign, big window and creative looking iron gate). Also my Grandad (Darke) from my mum's side was evacuated to Watchet during the World War 2, where he stayed with his Uncle, who gave him strict instructions not to go near the boats, in which he did anyway where he would meet a few Norwegian fishermen who would give a lot nice sweet treats to the kids. My Grandad Darke had Died in May 2020, but he did used to talk about his evacuation story a lot (according to my mum)

Derek, a female goose, became a cult figure in Watchet on the west Somerset coast after arriving during a storm in 2010 and refusing to leave with the rest of her flock.
She became a fixture of Watchet life, with locals and visitors feeding her cabbage and Weetabix, until her passing in October 2021.

My Special place too. Many happy family holidays from 1974 to 81. Loved it as a boy and loved to see the cargo ships coming and going mainly to and from Portugal bringing back cargos of Cork when it was a working port. @@LittleBearBBQ_Food_Original

My mum’s friend lives here so we stopped by for a visit on our way to Dunster earlier this month. I didn’t see too much of the place-mostly just the market on the esplanade and the museum-but it seemed like a pleasant place. I liked that the heritage railway lets people use the platform as a thoroughfare so my son got to see the steam train without us having to go on it (no time) and the friendly man in the museum gave him a postcard for being inquisitive about the exhibits. I like that the bookstore is a charity one too.

I am lucky enough to live in Watchet. It packs a lot into a small space. In Pebbles Tavern on the third Tuesday of the month we sing sea shanties . Some were collected from Yankee Jack (John Short). I like the format of your video which gives a good impression of Watchet. Must get one of those gimbal thingies.

Watchet is one of those towns that deserves better . The people are marvelous , the work and comittment that goes into the different events is astounding . Watchets heritage and place in history is unique but... there are things working against the town Namely 1/ the cliff road linking Watchet to Blue Anchor and Minehead is now closed permanently meaning that Watchet is now a Cul de sac and short 3 minute trips to Blue Anchor is now up to an hour depending on traffic . 2/ The appalling crazy idea to build an Frankenstein typoe of building on East Quay is somebody's idea of a horribly corrupted prank and should be either torn down or adjusted radicaly to house marine related products . 3/ Pehaps the maine culprit of what Watchet is not proceding is the dubious owners of the Marina . The Marine group have not done what they said ,by not clearing the mud , by ensuring that the port is a place to avoid by wealthy boat owners and their wealthy crewmembers that would otherwise be eager to sample what the town has to offer . The Marina remains a woefully underused ( just 40 boats in a 250 berth harbour) . Council should be condemmed for allowing all 3 of these ills to happen .
