That's awesome man! Glad my video could help. It seriously is an amazing guitar for the price. I hope you're enjoying it after a good set up. A really good thing to do is adjust the individual string saddles on the bridge so that it forms a curve, with the D string being the highest point in the curve (look at a Mustang bridge for reference online, or just buy a mustang bridge and replace it lol), and then locktite those screws so they don't buzz.
Yeah, It took me a while to get it set up, (a lot longer than usual lol). I'm actually a guitar tech so I used a radius gauge to set the saddle hight but they do keep working themselves loose, so I'm getting some locktite today. Great vid!
Props to this guy for doing a video on Nirvana guitar tones without playing Teen Spirit, honestly I have massive respect to you for this because that song is overplayed and every guitar channel has a video with that riff.
I don't know how Squier makes such good guitars at these price points, it's honestly incredible. Especially the Indonesian Squiers being made at the Cort Factory, the quality control there is impeccable, with even the Affinity Basses coming out of there being comparable to higher end basses.
Absolutely! The Vintage Modified series is exceptional (got the chance to play a VM Jazzmaster and Strat but can't speak for the Mustang). I own a Japanese Fender '65 RI Mustang, and the VM Jaguar is not far off at all in terms of quality.
Mr Bleach she doesn’t own the rights to that song. That song was a cover and wasn’t a song they wrote. Without using google and to the best of my recollection, I believe it was written by a 60’s band called Venus Blue.
@@XxStonedImmaculatexX actually artists do own the rights to THEIR VERSION of other songs. They just have to pay songwriting royalties to the original songwriter but ownership of the specific recording and performance royalties goes to the performer. You would need Nirvana's permission to use Nirvana's version in any commercial way. Songs are covered by two separate types of copyright: one for the specific recording, and another which protects the underlying lyrics and musical composition.
I bought a Mastery bridge for mine. I didn't wanna mess with any of that bridge nonsense. It's also a good idea, when you put on a new set of strings, to take off the tailpiece and flip the two outside screws, that hold the plate to the tremolo, upside down so they don't rub on your strings and steal tone.
It does fit but I would not recommend this. The Japanese Mustang bridge (the only one that will fit because the VM Jaguar because it is Indonesian, so they share the metric measurements) has a 7.25" radius while the VM Jaguar has a 9.5", so the action on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings will be higher off the fret board than the low and high E strings. What this means is that you will either get a lot of buzz on the low and high E strings if you keep the action low, or the middle strings will be much harder to play than the Es because of their higher action. I would recommend buying a Straytrem Jaguar bridge because they make the Japanese Mustang Bridge, but with a 9.5" radius option (specifically for the VM Jaguar). This will eliminate many of the problems that installing a Mustang bridge will bring. I have used both bridges on my Jaguar and have to say that the Straytrem is by far SIGNIFICANTLY better than the Japanese Mustang bridge, and for only a $20 difference.
For all people asking for mustang bridge, there are 2 bridges you can get, one that has adjustable saddles( you can set the proper 9.5 radius) and one that does not (which is locked in 7.25 radius). You can get the adjustable one cheap on ebay, and it is a big improvement over the stock(junk) bridge.
Picked up the exact same thing today. Love it to pieces; but the bridge is always a bit faulty; and there’s always a ringing sound from the bridge.. not really noticeable when playing loud, just be mindful.
I bought a fender jazz master brand new not opened for 500$ I've never owned a Squier because its just a little bit more to get a fender, but yeh but my fender is great for grunge, 2 opened coil pickups and 22 frets rosewood board, nice tremelo set up, the only problem is having to fix the intination

Mr. Burns the other guitar that I have been thinking about getting is the Epiphone ES 339 Pro because from what I've seen online about the dot is that it's a bit on the big side and can be a little uncomfortable to play but if it's the guitar you want go for it :). I think I'll probably get the Jaguar as I already have a an Epiphone SG G-400 Pro with coil splitting humbuckers and I'd like to get a guitar for that Fender sound
Something about the song Serve the Servants and Kurt's Jaguar that just sounds so perfect to me. I don't know what it is is, but it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Nirvana enthusiasts please read before buying a Jag: These stock fender/squier bridges are temperamental. I just got a jag (partially based on this video) And Ive already ordered a mustang bridge to help keep my strings in place. Also, a LOT of people say play 11 gauge string. You could probably get by with 10 if you do heavy bottoms. I'm going both routes. Getting mustang bridge, using gap tape to keep the bridge in place, and putting on 11's. Thing of it is, these guitars aren't made for grunge in a stock state. But, light modifications and a few thicker callouses and it should be fine. You NEED to lock in the action adjustment. Either locktite or clear nail polish will lock them, if you ever need to unlock, just use some polish remover and you can once again turn the hex screws, allen, whatever. I played through teen spirit, Molly's Lips, and Son of a gun, and my action had fallen to the point that I had lost most of my high notes. Do LOTS of googling when you get a Jaguar. They are badass... but they are tricky. Which makes it kinda fun really. Hope you got one!
No need to tape anything, you will kinda ruin its functionality, the bridge was supposed to rock back and forth. you will just have to fiddle until you find the sweet spot and then loctite/nail polish everything. I recommend the ebay mustang bridge with adjustable saddles, it is cheap and much better then the stock bridge, which is a piece of junk if you ask me.

Hey man, how similar in sound would you say the classic player jazzmaster is to this guitar? I know it’s a completely different one but if you had to compare where would place it?
Hey, Conner, congratulations for your video. I really liked it. When you played "R*** Me" using only the bridge, it sounded like an authentic In Utero cover, making it really incredible. I'm planning to buy this guitar because Fenders are really expensive guitars here in Brazil. Do you remember if you change anything in your Jaguar for this video? And also, do you know if I can put the same modifications from Kurt's Signature Guitar in this Jag?
Hello! Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I would highly recommend getting this guitar, especially if the cost of a Fender is too high, because nowadays the Squier guitars, especially the higher quality ones like this, are very good for their price. Everything that you see in the guitar is stock. I changed the strings to .010 - .052, but it didn't really make any difference in sound, so I wouldn't worry about that. As for the Kurt modifications, you can absolutely do them on this guitar with a little bit of money. You will have to pay to get both pickups routed in order to fit humbuckers, like kurt did, but if you are just going for a more Nirvana sound, I would recommend just switching the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. I did that and it sounds super good now. All of the other mods (TOM bridge, pickup selector switch, etc.) shouldn't be too expensive to do. Hope this helps!
Thank you for this very important information, mate. I'm a huge Nirvana fan since childhood I also started to play guitar only this year, using my DiGiorgio Acoustic Guitar, reproducing the same tunings of Nevermind and In Utero. I'll buy the guitar only in my next birthday. Once again, thanks.
Kurts Jag had Modded pickups, had two sets of double humbuckers (super distortion on the bridge). He also had a Gibson Tune-o-Matic bridge. These stock fender/squier bridges are temperamental. ALSO. Sorry for the long ass reply 1 year later. But you NEED to lock in the action adjustment. Either locktite or clear nail polish will lock them. I played through teen spirit, Molly's Lips, and Son of a gun, and my action had fallen to the point that I had lost most of my high notes. Do LOTS of googling when you get a Jaguar. They are badass... but they are tricky. Which makes it kinda fun really. Hope you got one!
Kurt would prefer playing a Mustang over a Jaguar. He played a Jaguar more, though, because he didn't want to mess up any Mustangs he had, so he primarily used them in studio to avoid any possible damage. It's really up to you; would you like Kurt's favorite guitar or one of his more iconic guitars?
I looked at one of these two days ago. It was at Guitar Center on Sheridan in Denver. The neck was so bad it wasn't even screwed all the way down to the body. Seriously I could see a 1/8 inch Gap between the neck and the body. The screws were visible in the gap. The action was high so I inspected the neck joint. The quality on these guitars seems to vary wildly. Definitely inspect the neck joint for shims and or gaps. That being said the guitar sounded good enough but no way I would have purchased it. I feel bad for whoever does. This did however motivate me to convert one of my stratocasters into a long scale Jaguar.
Great guitar and great playing. As a Gen Xer I love seeing Millenials who appreciate music from my youth. You ever think of putting DiMarzio pick ups on it?
I would advise you to spend the extra $100 on the Jag if its between the Jaguar and Mustang. The difference between the two is pretty astonishing. The VM Mustang is probably the worst out of all the Squier VMs. The Squier VM Strat is very, very good too. All of the VM guitars are great for Nirvana and SP (I play both), but you can't beat the quality of the VM Jaguar, Strat, and Jazzmaster. The Mustang not so much. I do however own a Fender 1965 Reissue Mustang, which is better than any other guitar I own (including the Squier Jag), so if you ever feel like upgrading to the big brother (Fender), then I highly recommend a '65 Reissue Mustang.
I was thinking about doing a review of my Fender '65 RI Mustang, but it doesn't have stock pickups so I'm not sure how helpful of a review it would be.
Awesome video! I know people are split on this topic, but I've found you actually don't have to replace the original bridges on this guitar if you get it set up properly and shim the neck backwards where there the strings are pushing a little harder down across the bridge. With good 11 gauge strings and a good set up these things are good although they do buzz and rattle a little, but that doesn't really translate through the amp. I haven't tried the Loctite yet. I'm only conscious of the buzzes unplugged.a But I kinda think they're designed to be quirky. It also depends on how you want to play too. I don't like to do a lot of crazy bends and I attack a little less aggressively with the picking hand. There is a learning curve.
Unfortunately, I have already soldered in a hot rails in the bridge and have switched out the volume pot, so if I were to do a clean only demo, it wouldn't have the stock Jaguar sound :(
The Classic Vibe has the same wiring & pickups, the only differences are the Classic Vibe comes with the Mustang style bridge instead of the one that a lot of people have issues with & the neck has tall narrow frets instead of the medium jumbos on the Vintage Modified. The Classic Vibe is intended to replace the Vintage Modified. They may have both been available when you posted your comment, but the Vintage Modified versions would have been old stock & won't be replaced when they're sold out.
Even though Kurt used humbuckers, and the HH will be truer to sound right off the bat, I HIGHLY recommend you get the newer VM Jaguar because it is modeled after the Fender Jaguar, both in wiring and aesthetics, unlike the HH Squier Jaguar, and it is also constructed better in both playability and overall quality. The only mods you will have to do to this is throw in a new bridge pickup (Seymour Duncan Hot Rails is what I did), or get it routed for a humbucker in the bridge and buy the SH4-JB humbucker. Yes, it will be more expensive this way, but overall you will have yourself an amazing investment for what you're paying, and a very high quality guitar for the price (even on top of the mods)-- not to mention you'll basically have Kurt's guitar (if you rout it for a bridge humbucker). On a final note, this VM Jaguar is almost as good as my Fender '65 RI Mustang, and when I say almost, I mean it. This Jaguar is pretty much the quality of a high end Japanese Fender (despite being Indonesian), no matter if the Fender purists try to convince you otherwise.
xibbit so he's kinda right, Kurts jaguar actually had dimarzio pickups in it, a super distortion and a paf in the neck. Also a 3 way toggle instead of the on off switches, just look up pics and specs. Google goes a long way.
Right! I wasn't claiming he used Hot Rails in the bridge for his actual Jag, but a lot of people may not want or have the money to rout the bridge in order to fit, say, the Dimarzio Super Distortion or SH-4 JB. I offer the Hot Rails as a solid alternative because Kurt did use it in a couple of his guitars (I think the stratocasters mostly?) and it will definitely give a very Nirvana-y tone.
I had to, yes. It's not as scary as it sounds, you just have to be extremely careful. If you decide to do this, file very slowly and try not to file downwards (i.e., making the slot deeper), but rather file outwards to widen. Also another trick is to just take the end of the string and slide it up and down against the nut to basically sand it to the perfect width, although this technique will take a lot longer. I only had to file for the E, A, and D string. If you get 10-52, the G, B, and E strings should fit right in. Hope this helps!
Its kinda sad cause i want this guitar so bad and in India it sells doubled the price. Almost $600 which is nearly Rs54000 in India... But nice demo man.. Really love it. Also what amp are you using?
Well it depends what sound you're going for. I don't think there's really a "wrong" or "bad" pickup, it's all about what kind of sound you want. If you want a Nirvana-y grungy tone, then no it isn't like the SH4 or the DiMarzio Super Distortion, but if you like the very bright, twangy sound of the stock pickup it isn't bad at all. I have switched mine out for a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails that way I won't have to rout the bridge to fit a humbucker. It's all personal taste.
Thnak you, I'm getting mine in two weeks So does the Seymour Duncan Hot Rail fit nicely into the bridge pickup position and would you recommend replacing the stock floating bridge with a mustang bridge? cheers
The Hot Rails will fit in very nicely, but it will take a bit of effort to try to get the wires out of the way so that it lays flat. The Jaguar is sort of weird for a Fender/Squier guitar because the pickups are not screwed to the pickguard as most Fenders are, but instead they are screwed to the body. It can be a bit tricky to install it but if you can get it right with some patience, it is definitely a solid upgrade.
Other than what I've mentioned in the video and throughout the comments, not so much! It's probably my favorite guitar I have besides my Fender '65 Mustang. Despite this being a Squier and my Mustang being a Fender, I honestly use the Jag just as much if not more, and can barely tell the difference in terms of feel and quality between the two. I highly recommend this guitar if you can afford it because the Vintage Modified series is where the line between Squier and Fender starts to get blurred. You could slap Fender on the headstock of this guitar and people probably wouldn't even bat an eye after a good setup and possibly a new bridge.
***** Honestly the bridge on this really isn't that bad as long as you put loctite on it (which only costs around 5 USD). If you are dead set on changing the bridge though, the Fender Mustang Bridge isn't bad (50 USD), or even a Straytrem Jaguar Bridge (65 USD).
In order of me playing them (all by Nirvana): Rape Me, Lithium, Drain You, School, Come As You Are, Negative Creep, In Bloom, Tourettes, Serve The Servants, Heart Shaped Box, and All Apologies.
That's true! Apologies for the misinformation. I was trying to get across that he used both Mesa Boogie and Marshall, but that I was using what I had available (Dual Rectifier / Cab) even though it wasn't an exact match of the gear he used. Should have worded that a little better haha.
Guys I need help, lm a big fan of Nirvana and Black Sabbath so should I get this jaguar or a epiphone G-400 pro its hard to choose between one guys any help or suggestions plssss helppppppp
I'd go for the jag..In my opinion it looks better (sexy as hell) it's more versatile , it has a tremolo, shorter scale(easier to reach more frets and less tension on the strings) different circuits (lead and rhythm)...try both of them and see which one suits you the most..they are both good guitars :)
Thank you so much man! And hey I feel it. I'm in college and can barely afford anything but mostly because I spend it on guitars like this and gear haha
Josh Mell go on zzounds.com, I had mine come in from them yesterday. they have a payment plan that's unbeatable. send the first payment only and 2 days later, you have a Jaguar. it's 70 bucks a month for 6 months.
I would actually recommend a Straytrem bridge as the radius of the mustang bridge is 7.25" or something like that while the Jaguar is 9". If the improper action doesn't bother you than the Mustang bridge is definitely a cheaper alternative, but the Straytrem is a much better Mustang style bridge with a 9" radius.
This is totally a good idea I just didn't switch mine cause the loc-tite fixes the problem completely and I didn't want to worry about the potential string slippage that infamously occurs with the Mustang bridge on a Jaguar.
To make it playable for my heavy playing style, I throw the Fender Bridge out and replaced it by a Tune-O-Matic Bridge from Gotoh. Also using 0.12- Strings.
Half way through this video I paused it, drove to guitar center, and bought one.
That's awesome man! Glad my video could help. It seriously is an amazing guitar for the price. I hope you're enjoying it after a good set up.
Since when was rape a swear?
Kurts Jag had Modded pickups, had two sets of double humbuckers (super distortion on the bridge). He also had a Gibson Tune-o-Matic bridge. These stock fender/squier bridges are temperamental.
But fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar quality is legendary!
You should do this on the vm mustang.
Hi mate, I have vm jag too. I'm buying quarter pound jaguar bridge pups. What are your thoughts?
Do you think it could do the Mac Demarco sorta indie sound
For sure if you have the right effects
Hello friend, The bridge of this guitar normally move to left or rigth ? And The strings get out of The bridge ? Or this thing only happen to my
Hey nice video demo, what song is that at 9:00?
A really butchered version of All Apologies
That chorus pedal is going to give me nightmares.
Why Lol
Yo, Vintage Modified JM or Jag, what should I get
Kurt would prefer playing a Mustang over a Jaguar.
So the pickups aren't the best at all but with a simple pickup switch to a Seymour Duncan hot rails or a jb 4 it would be amazing
this or a squier mustang or a squier strat with hot rail pickups for nirvana / smashing pumpkins tone? great review btw
I do however own a Fender 1965 Reissue Mustang, which is better than any other guitar I own (including the Squier Jag), so if you ever feel like upgrading to the big brother (Fender), then I highly recommend a '65 Reissue Mustang.
thanks mam
I am buying this guitar, what is the best bridge replacement .
A lot of people put a mustang bridge in there. I think it drops right in too
Great Video! Can anyone tell me what is "modified" about this guitar. Thanks
the guitar has vintage qualities while being modified to be playable and affordable.
do a Mustang !pls
I was thinking about doing a review of my Fender '65 RI Mustang, but it doesn't have stock pickups so I'm not sure how helpful of a review it would be.
Conner Turmon you should still do it man I'm sure lots of people would just love to see the guitar itself, and man love the great shots of the jag,😀
Thank you man!
Conner Turmon Please do more of these!!!!
I will probably end up doing a review of my Fender '65 RI Mustang!
Great Video!, but why you've speeded it up?
Thank you but nothing is sped up.
There is a learning curve.
have you ever had problems with the tremolo arm?
Can u do a only clean demo test playing chords or something like rhcp? im looking to buy this guitar :)
Unfortunately, I have already soldered in a hot rails in the bridge and have switched out the volume pot, so if I were to do a clean only demo, it wouldn't have the stock Jaguar sound :(
+Conner Turmon alright, anyway do it i like jaguars xd
g'day mate, could you do a vid displaying the sound of the hot rails pickup in a jag? cheers mate cool vid
I looked them up and there are classic and vintage models is there any difference between them (they both look exactly the same)
The Classic Vibe has the same wiring & pickups, the only differences are the Classic Vibe comes with the Mustang style bridge instead of the one that a lot of people have issues with & the neck has tall narrow frets instead of the medium jumbos on the Vintage Modified.
The Classic Vibe is intended to replace the Vintage Modified. They may have both been available when you posted your comment, but the Vintage Modified versions would have been old stock & won't be replaced when they're sold out.
I thought to play grunge sounds you'd need a humbucker, but this sounded great!
Hey what do you think I should get the old vm squire jaguar with hh or this one in the vid I'm looking for a Kurt type sound
I offer the Hot Rails as a solid alternative because Kurt did use it in a couple of his guitars (I think the stratocasters mostly?) and it will definitely give a very Nirvana-y tone.
oh no, i meant about the jb in there, its a great pickup and all but if you want to be exactly like kurt go with the dimarzio.
Did you have to file the nut to fit 10-52?
I had to, yes. It's not as scary as it sounds, you just have to be extremely careful. If you decide to do this, file very slowly and try not to file downwards (i.e., making the slot deeper), but rather file outwards to widen. Also another trick is to just take the end of the string and slide it up and down against the nut to basically sand it to the perfect width, although this technique will take a lot longer.
I only had to file for the E, A, and D string. If you get 10-52, the G, B, and E strings should fit right in.
Hope this helps!
How exactly do you use Loc-Tight on the screws?
You just put some drops of Loctite on the small allen screws in the bridge posts.
Its kinda sad cause i want this guitar so bad and in India it sells doubled the price. Almost $600 which is nearly Rs54000 in India... But nice demo man.. Really love it. Also what amp are you using?
Way to shred it bro. You killed it. Thanks.
Amazing demo.
does that bridge pickup sound good, i mean compared to a humbucker?
Well it depends what sound you're going for. I don't think there's really a "wrong" or "bad" pickup, it's all about what kind of sound you want. If you want a Nirvana-y grungy tone, then no it isn't like the SH4 or the DiMarzio Super Distortion, but if you like the very bright, twangy sound of the stock pickup it isn't bad at all. I have switched mine out for a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails that way I won't have to rout the bridge to fit a humbucker. It's all personal taste.
Thnak you, I'm getting mine in two weeks
So does the Seymour Duncan Hot Rail fit nicely into the bridge pickup position and would you recommend replacing the stock floating bridge with a mustang bridge?
It can be a bit tricky to install it but if you can get it right with some patience, it is definitely a solid upgrade.
cheers for the advice mate, maybe a video displaying your modifications?
may i ask how much is this?
Can someone tell me the name of the song at 7:30? Btw gr8 video!! subbed
"Tourettes" by Nirvana (:
Thank you very much sir, you are my hero of the week!!!
No problem! It's a great Nirvana song!
Is there a lot of hum with distortion on
Corrosive Lizard no more then any other single coil pickup guitar. And you can always line the control cavities with copper foil.
Can anyone tell me how much it costs?
Kurt never used single coils guitars
I've been thinking about getting one of these, anything I should know?
I see, what bridge would you recommend me? maybe something not too expensive
Conner Turmon What happens if I don’t do anything to the bridge?
Im afraid to ask this but what are the songs begin played? lolol
In order of me playing them (all by Nirvana): Rape Me, Lithium, Drain You, School, Come As You Are, Negative Creep, In Bloom, Tourettes, Serve The Servants, Heart Shaped Box, and All Apologies.
He didn't use a dual rectifier, he used the studio pre amp and a Marshall power amp.
That's true! Apologies for the misinformation. I was trying to get across that he used both Mesa Boogie and Marshall, but that I was using what I had available (Dual Rectifier / Cab) even though it wasn't an exact match of the gear he used. Should have worded that a little better haha.
amazing guitar tone
Great review, thanks!
great, thanks
I’ll stick with the fender stuff. I just can’t trust Squire too much bad experience. Sounds great though.
Hey, video is very cool! What pedal settings you used? Very like that sound
Hi! I'm glad you liked the video. I used a Boss-DS1 with the Tone at 11 o'clock, the Distortion at almost at maximum, and the Level at maximum.
When did you purchase this guitar and where?
I bought this off of Amazon brand new sometime around April of 2016.
Seymour duncan picks up!
If you want a better clean sound for nirvana just turn your treble all the way up and lower the bass
Great video
Nirvana - Love Buzz
(background music)
great video man ive been wanting to get one of these since they came out but been to broke lol
Just swap out the bridge for a mustang bridge and you're golden
I would actually recommend a Straytrem bridge as the radius of the mustang bridge is 7.25" or something like that while the Jaguar is 9". If the improper action doesn't bother you than the Mustang bridge is definitely a cheaper alternative, but the Straytrem is a much better Mustang style bridge with a 9" radius.
Thanks man just saw a bunch of people swapping it with the mustang bridge but then read about the radius issues.
0:14 Ekhem. Grunge? Cough. Cough.
You're not the first who says this bridge sucks.
Thx for Guitar Rig settings.
string gauge?
.10 - .52
Really nice video
swap the bridge for a mustang bridge
This is totally a good idea I just didn't switch mine cause the loc-tite fixes the problem completely and I didn't want to worry about the potential string slippage that infamously occurs with the Mustang bridge on a Jaguar.
What does loc-tite do?
i love that guitar, but the fact that it has a short scale... i prefer the jazzmaster with two nice humbuckers \m/
i think Ty Segall uses one of these bad boys on his earlier albums
trustnojuan yup, you're correct. Also nice profile pic.
So, Squiers aren't shitty anymore?
no they are not ..especially this one..its a short scale guitar.. rhythm/lead circuit, badass look what elder could we ask
Una personalidad bien marcada la tuya...
Can you feel my fret buzz
Berapa ratus harga nya
Great the guitar fender jaguar
To make it playable for my heavy playing style, I throw the Fender Bridge out and replaced it by a Tune-O-Matic Bridge from Gotoh. Also using 0.12- Strings.
