The red lights are only meant to be used on the rear. Really they're meant to be used to show the emergency vehicle is stopped or on scene, but a lot of the time they use them just for extra lighting. Some times you see just the rear reds on whilst an emergency vehicle is stopped in a non-parking location, as an extra warning, but it's not a genuine emergency. They may have to quickly get something or speak to someone. At least that's what I've learnt!
Responds to rail incidents, they work in collaboration with network rail emergency engineers/rescue teams and that's why it has a small network rail emblem on the back window.

Because they're Scottish, the sun doesn't shine much in Scotland so everything goes a pale white. Kidding. It's Scottish Ambulance Service's personal preference.
