    The Eternal Empire - I - Rise Again.
    *ROME IN 1444*
    The Roman Empire had been forged by the conquests of Caesar and Augustus in the 1st Century BC and it had reigned as the dominant power in the Mediterranean for 4 centuries.
    The Roman Empire was divided into East and West in 395 after the death of Emperor Theodosius. While this doomed the Western Empire to a rapid and violent collapse, the Eastern Roman Empire prospered without being weighed down by the Western Provinces. After the fall of Rome, the Eastern Romans under Justinian pushed to reconquer the lost provinces and pushed the Eastern Roman Empire into its Golden Age where its influence spread from Spain to Mesopotamia.
    Like all things, this golden age came to an end after the death of Justinian and so began a long a desperate fight for the Empire's survival with the Empire being pushed back on all fronts. Over the centuries, Khanates, Kingdoms and Caliphates picked at what was perceived to be the corpse of a decaying Empire. This period of decline was "hastened" by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 when the Crusaders sacked Constantinople and split the Empire amongst themselves. The Empire was reduced to a rump state around Nicaea until it slowly reconquered the Empire which was finally completed in 1261 with the recapture of Constantinople.
    This somehow was only the beginning of Rome's darkest days. In the following centuries the remnants of the Empire were picked apart by the Turks, Italians and Bulgarians. By 1444, the Empire was a rump state, reduced to the territories surrounding Constantinople and Morea. By this point, it was a forgone conclusion that the Roman Empire would be thrown into the dustbin of history. Or so it seemed.
    *RISE FROM THE ASHES*
    The initial focus of the Emperor for his "Campaign of Revival" was foreign policy. He ensured monetary and military support from Serbia and began rebuilding relations with the Papacy which had been cut since the Great Schism in the 11th Century.
    The first war was declared against Epirus in December 1444. The Despotate of Epirus was being picked off by the Ottomans and the Emperor figured it was better to conquer it for Rome than hand it to the Turks.
    There were hopes in the East and West of ended the Great Schism with the Council of Florence in 1431. Some in the East saw it as eroding Roman autonomy and a threat to their religious teachings, those in power understood these concessions were necessary if the Empire were to survive.
    The Epirus War came to an end in November 1445. Arta was conquered and the Epirote government was exiled to Kefalonia as a Roman client state.
    The alliance networking continued with Georgia, Albania and the Knights Hospitaller signing alliances with the Empire.
    *TURNING THE TIDE*
    With the Ottomans distracted with a war in Anatolia, the Emperor saw his chance to get a decisive victory against the Ottomans. The 1st Ottoman Reconquest War was declared in February 1447.
    The war got off to a rocky start when the Ottomans handed the Romans their first defeat in the war during the Battle of Thessaloniki. (1447) Fortifications were thrown together in Corinth to buy time for the Roman Army to lick its wounds but the Ottomans bypassed the fortifications and annihilated the Romans at the Battle of Corinth. (1447) The fortifications at Corinth did trap the Ottoman forces in Morea and allowed the Romans time to regroup and counterattack. The 2nd Battle of Corinth (1448) was an unmitigated disaster for the Romans. Truly the most confusing actor in this war was Skanderbeg, the ruler of Albania. At every given opportunity he seemed to abandon his Roman allies when they needed him most. It is likely that Rome could've lifted the Siege of Corinth with the support of Skanderbeg's Army but that support never materialized and Corinth fell to the Ottomans in September 1448 after three battles.
    The tides of war began to turn when the Ottomans were forced to deal with distractions from the East with a war with Dulkadir and Georiga finally offering to join the war alongside their Roman allies.
    The first victory for the Romans came at the Battle of Kesriye. A series of battles in Macedonia followed and the Ottomans were pushed back to the Bosphorus. The Ottomans chose to focus on the Romans and redirected forces meant for Georgia to push the Romans back. Every victory for the Romans led to a victory for the Ottomans. Eventually the Ottomans were pushed out of the Balkans and Georgia started cleaning up Anatolia.
    This war had become a war of survival for both nations. Rome and the Ottomans were running very low on manpower (Even Rome's mercenary companies were running dry) and both were taking loans in a desperate attempt to keep their economies alive.
    The war finally came to an end in November 1452 after 4 years of bloodshed. Both nations had practically destroyed each other but Rome came out on top. All of Greece was reclaimed the city of Nicomedia was finally recaptured.
    The Eastern Roman Empire was forged by countless legacies, of great men who stared certain defeat in the face and clawed their way to victory. When their backs were against the wall, the Romans never gave in, they fought until the last and often won against all odds. This victory against the Ottomans was just another example. The Empire may have been in decline and a shadow of the once Great Empire but it proved once again that Rome was truly eternal.
    *HISTORY OVER*
    As bloody as this episode was, I don't think you've ever made a first episode as exciting as this one. Mistakes were made but they only made the eventual victory so much more satisfying.

    For people who are just starting up a Byz run, at 24:30 Chewy didn't do it, but one of the neat mercs for Byz is the Palace Guards - They're typically a little larger than the free company(5k infantry starting, instead of 4k) and cost *0* land force limit, they do not cost any force limit, so they're super cheap on maintenance as you're not raising the cost of your entire army for being over limit

    • @Chewyshoot

    The knights raiding you and preventing alliance is frustrating for sure, though you have a couple of options you missed - setting them to friendly attitude and continuing to improve relations, as that can trigger them to improve relations back with you, getting you to positive!

    Had my own attempts after watching Ludis guide and he got so unbelievably lucky in his video, 5 shock general from the Hadjuks, Ottomans being braindead and a stack wipe in plains. Could not for the life of me repeat his success within like 4 years or whatever he did. But did manage to beat the Ottomans regardless and this video is so much more realistic, with all the battle losses due to ridiculous Ottoman morale.

    I am playing my own Byz run atm and am finding the start is still basically the same in terms of tactics but it does feel like there's more RNG involved then before. Curious if you feel the same Chewy given how much experience you have with the Romans

    • @Speedster___
      @Speedster___ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its Byz tho they shouldnt be able to suceed and so rng in terms if allies is fine

    • @Icetubexd
      @Icetubexd 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There is a start with little to no RNG now, you don't need allies or anything. Not for the war at least, of course somebody to deter the Ottomans from attacking you is important, but that can be anyone.
      1. Sell titles and hoard money.
      2. Build 2x galleys in every province.
      3. Get all 3 advisors
      4. Wait for Renaissance spawn, activate the dev cost icon, double the icon boost with your first mission. Enable edicts and you get -30% dev cost.
      Use it to dev the Archea(?) region, pop the mission after state reaches 30 dev. and now you have Renaissance + you can remove the army debuff with no problem.
      5. Wait for the Ottomans to start a war, finish your galleys, hire mercs and beat the shit out of them after rushing down Gallipoli.
      Easy, no restarts required.

      Ally someone tough like the Knights or Albania (If you can get stronger like the Mamluks obviously go for it, but those are more reasonable) Wait for them to get into a war in Asia, and then you pounce. They will never cross the Adriatic alive. If you fight them in the Balkans you're in for a brawl, but it's winnable but you really need to get some friends

    • @Chewyshoot
      @Chewyshoot  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep, stack merc cost modifiers and rush the Macedonia fort. RNG is the number of siege pips you get on merc leaders. The best I got its two but 3-4 is perfect. Get some friends with a navy and skanderbro and just avoid fights till you have the siege

    its really odd, dispite all the debuffs I found it easier to beat the Ottomans this time - tried to follow the guides and sort of did at the start but then went my own way - had to mass 40k stack on galipoli while Ottomans were at war in Asia Minor. They seemed to not dare attack it. After that it was a walk in the park.
    Normally it takes me several attempts, this one was on my second attempt, as my first the Ottomans declared war on me very early :/

    is there any advice for what to do if you don't have any dlc? I've been not getting that lucky with mercenary generals (sometimes they will have 0 siege and or 0 shock). Epirus keeps managing to get nations like hungry as an ally (sometimes before i get any ally). and if i try to get even 1 mercenary group then it's economically unsustainable enough for me to automatically get loans around every month
