One answer: NO ! They're not worthless, especially for comic book fans who don't have deep pockets.

I am not at all rich... And if the only way I can get my hands on my grails is buying lower if not lowest grade... LOW GRADE BETTER THAN NO GRADE... I just got my hands on a ASM #50. The KingPin book. It’s a low low grade, but I am super happy to have it!

Exactly there are plenty of times I've come across super cool extremely low grade books that I'd never get to own if they where near mint.

I sincerely appreciate the time and effort your put into these videos. Navigating the world of comic collecting is tough, especially with limited income and investment goals. Your videos, and the GoCollect blogs, help people like me know where to look and what questions to research. I think the most important component is leading viewers to the right questions. An index would certainly be a valuable tool. I made the Willie and Nillie comment in another video (my other account). I keep a notepad next to my computer to make notes of questions I develop through watching videos like yours, or those you ask which I want to research. I can't emphasize how important it is to set goals, then develop a financial plan for achieving those goals. The planning process requires knowing which questions to ask, then reviewing published literature (GoCollect, expert opinions, watching auctions you're NOT bidding on, etc.), and determining the validity of that research. Then applying your finding to the financial plan for collecting. Thanks for always providing great information.

The only issue is lower grades can take a while to equalize, especially below a 4.0, when the higher grades move up. So much is dependent on appearance, a pretty 3.5 will sell much more quickly than an "ugly" 5.0 or 5.5. We have a 6.0 Hulk 180 with nasty grease pencil marks on the front. It'll sell eventually for what we want (exactly FMV), but a 3.5 we sold last week looked like a 7.5 on the front, but had water stains and tears on the back, literally sold within 1 hour for 15% over FMV. It is what it is.

Low grade better than no grade - tried and true expression those of us in the hobby live by. Mind you, a low grade modern might as well be used to light a campfire. Too many high grade copies around.

An index could certainly help those of us less savy with the stockmarket invest more wisely in our comic collections for both short term and long term. It's nice to know that comics are an investment with liquidity if and when the time comes that at we need to let them go.
    Great stuff Regie!

Love the content Reggie. Rule of thumb for me on investing or collecting in graded comics less than 9.8 is if the character you are buying is a household name. If the hype has stayed with that character longer than 6 months after initial peak value of the 9.8 graded book.
My last rule of thumb in buying a comic other than 9.8, is once the 9.8 has reached above 1500 dollars I feel like this where most collectors pockets stop running deep. For me this is a safe point to buy a household character less than 9.8

Platinum and Golden Age comics may NEVER reach the 9.8 tier with the present system of grading (unless you are lucky enough to get a file copy). So for some of these collectibles, a grading of 7.5 - 8.0 may be the highest you'll EVER see (in essence, they are the 9.4 - 9.8 of their era). Remember older comics were NEVER designed as collectibles - they were designed as entertainment (so the techniques used to produce them were not geared toward product longevity - as the modern comic book issues are now designed). I love older comics - give me your gold and platinum age comics (I'll take them in a 7.5 or 8.0 - ALL DAY LONG) !!

In regards to the books "trending downward," I'm wondering what criteria GoCollect uses for that "data." Over what period of time are they measuring these "downward" trends? Because if you look at the FMV of UF4 currently next to where it was at just three months ago, it's still in the green. It broke the $3000 mark for a couple of months, but now is trending around 2800 to 2900 (in a 9.8). Ebb and flow is natural in any healthy market. It's also natural that with folks getting back to spending money elsewhere with movie theaters opening back up, folks taking vacations, that some of that disposable income is being shifted elsewhere. But I don't see this book dropping much further. On the contrary, once we get a trailer for into the Spider-Verse 2, I think we'll start to see the book slowly increase again.
I think context matters here when we talk about data and upward or downward trends. Time frame needs to be present in order to correlate the current market health.

Purchased a "reader " copy of Amazing Spider-Man 6 for 12.00 dollars on ebay. It's in pretty bad shape with staples and missing pieces of the cover, but it's intact. It looks like whomever stapled, taped, and made very amateurish "repairs" was a kid and it looks like they were done atleast 40 years ago.
    This book is not worthless.
All the interior pages are intact and complete. It's most definitely 0.5, but it's complete with an exception of about 40% of the cover missing. It actually looks like pieces were cut out for a potential scrap book. You cannot touch a book with a missing cover for 10 times that.

Would an index further push blue chips books away from us low to mid range collectors? As in bring more attention to the better performing books and then drive the prices, FMV, up even more and out of reach? Part of the fun of collecting is trying to figure out which books are performing better over the long haul.

I think this debate can be boiled down to a simple directive: if you're in it just to own a piece of pop culture history, then any grade is a good grade to own. If you're in it because you want to make a truckload of money back, then not any grade will cut it. So just ask yourself why you want it; love of the medium, or love of money?

It makes sense to setan index for different comic ages. Let the volume sale of a particular comic be one of the criteria to be inclided as part of the index. Way to go to comic collection, the best alternative investment.

    - love your posts!
    - Everything has gone up and inflation is real. I agree with Comics as they are similar to investing in art as a store of value.
    - I like the post about grade of comics but if you relate to the stock market...Higher "investment" grades might go up more...but in down times they can crash harder too...Asset Allocation and investing the right amount ($$$ compared to total portfolio is important / asset allocation) Is a Giant Sized x men 1 not a ridiculous price now compared to 2 years ago even in a 6.0...or Spider man 300
    - The census or total # case for a grade is interesting too...personally I like books with a low census that have serious potential, but sometimes they require a lot of patience...to the contrary ASM 129, ASM 300, Giant Sized X-Men 1, Ultimate Fallout 4 all have a good amount of copies, but I would argue that the popularity and constant selling drive them up compared to some that have less graded comics/census available to sell that are unique and popular as well.
    - In regards to Ultimate Fallout 4 - I purchased this less than a year ago for 400 and it is selling for 3K. A 3% fall would hardly be a correction. A 20% or more would be a correction. However a parabolic move will always have some sort of correction...the question is whether you purchased for short term potential or long term....if it is short term...I would agree, get out...long term...not so sure.
These videos and the dialogue is so good and just flat out fun.
Lastly - Last year 24K was turned into 51K as far as purchases go and tracking value....yes I should sell some :)

This comment will be brief? Nah. Most importantly I do enjoy your posts. This is not a critique of anyone, especially you. Just a point.
The Inherent value in comics is "WORTH RETIRING ON". I have done research over many years. You can codify comics in graphs, indexes, create charts, algorithmic functions, etc. That is a field that would require many hours of discussion in and of itself. Is it worthwhile, perhaps it is. When investing your hard-earned money in Comic Books, Patience is of the utmost value. ( Do your Homework). :))
Still, enthusiasm for a Comic Book Character or a Cover or story is the driving force behind collecting.
Investing and collecting In the long run, " lower grade", Keys of Silver, Bronze, and Copper age books are great affordable Investments. Well, Silver Age is rising fast.
An example, Only an individual collector can assess the importance and emotion when looking at an artist's comic cover. (Too many great Artists to Mention), This equals value. The cover is classic to the collector.
In Avengers 58 a personal favorite, the characters burst off the cover. It's 4 Dimensional ( Out of the Range of Space and Time). It is the Vision's second appearance and Origin, Ultron's origin as well. That was incidental to the value of the book for me.
You can count on the fact that Silver age keys might not rise as much of a percentage in value as Bronze, Copper, or Modern age books. I think in lower grades they are terrific investments.
Expensive sometimes Not always. 1st appearances, especially in lower grades and 2nd appearances in particular are affordable. The percentage they go up is in stark contrast to the actual dollar amount they increase by. ( No time to show all the facts)
Just look at the low-grade price increases over the last year and 1/2 for 1 st series Silver Surfer 3 and 4 or all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first prints. ( Check out some of the second and 3rd prints like # 10)
Take note...Late 60's Early 70's Keys Low to High Grade in no particular order are Fabulous long-term investments. Too many to mention, here is a Few.
    Captain America 100 ( Personal Favorite )
Conan 1 ( Barry Smith Come on )
    Hero for Hire 1
    Werewolf by Night 32
    Ironman 1
    Silversurfer 1
Sorry, I won't apologize for my enthusiasm for Comics. They can inspire you. Nuff Said
I enjoy your Posts, Keep up the Good work Regie.
    Best

Imo it's alot more risky buying 9.8 because alot of the time there's not alot of sells in 9.8 to really reach what it's worth and low grades complete issues ussually have more sells at a lower grade

      @Eyrrll 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s one of those things that will probably end up in extremes, where most will see no long term gain but the ones that do will be astronomical.
Modern circulation numbers are poor, with many mainstream comics hovering around 25-30k copies and indies often at half of those numbers. That means that a lot of books from the last 10 years are already legitimately rare when compared to circulation numbers of the past.
As an extreme example, there have been 18 thousand copies of the Wolverine mini-series #1 graded by CGC. So in the case of a lot of indies, there are more graded Wolverine #1s than there even are copies in print to send for grading... so if one of those books becomes a big deal when we are 10 or 20 years down the line, it will cost a kidney to buy it (because there was never a huge supply to begin with).
