Why is pulling back her limbs / heart the oldest tradition known to her skin / heart? I don't get it, unless this means abused as a child or something? No right or wrong, just wish I understood what I'm listening to here.
I was just wondering how the bible study earned you the right to be alone. It just sounds as you are not living in this world. Or maybe I am projecting a piece of me here... That is the point of art in the end.
From my own experience growing up in an exceedingly religious family, she could mean that she feels that she has put in her time doing group bible study in an environment where love was always inextricably linked to self-sacrifice (i.e lyrics about love being at your own expense) and bodily restriction. I do think it's religious trauma that often makes some of us want to be alone. In any case, throughout the lyrics you can see that she draws a parallel between the self sacrifice/abnegation of the body desired by God, and by a lover, both of whom require her to abandon her agency, separating herself from her body in order to love her on their particular terms. I think the song could also possibly link BDSM sex with her lover and religion in this way, and saying that the "love" that is apparently supplied by both feels similar (the oldest tradition she knows) in being essentially constructed at the expense of her agency over her body. Neither God nor the lover desire or love all aspects of her personhood. That's how I read it, in anyways.
