So a German martingale is for a horse that goes on the forehand ??? Or is it to position the horse into a frame ?

Horse ridden backwards. Martingale WAY too tight, reins too long, horse heavy on forehand. Blechhh.

This is just really upsetting, why do people force horses to hold their heads in a different position that sometimes is unnatural and causes aching. To me it just makes the whole performance look terrible.

Daisy246 if a German Martingale is adjusted properly it doesn’t force the horses head into that position.

Daisy246 It doesn't force the head down. There is a light pressure to the bit and as soon as they soften at the poll the pressure goes away entirely. It's no different to the rider applying pressure then releasing when the horse softens. And when a horse rounds their neck and back it supports the rider's weight. Trotting around with their head in the air and hollowing while carrying a rider causes discomfort and pain to the horse.

@@kcwheeler7279 then why not just have the rider do so? Why need a "tool?"

katelynjh24 Because some horses do not quite understand bending at the poll and rounding out their back. This teaches and encourages. It does not force. Not every horse is going to naturally understand right away through a rider’s hands “oh if I bend at the poll and round out my back this feels better and isn’t painful like when I throw my head up and hallow out my back.” Horses do NOT think like us. And this seems to be a common misconception amongst horse people. Some horses do it naturally and some need a tool for a bit to teach and encourage. Every horse learns at their own pace.

@@TiredPonyGirl but you realize you can teach that without any "tools," right? Literally a halter, lead rope and lumgeline with a good horseman. Maybe people should work on themselves instead of throwing more unnecessary equipment on their horses.

No shade to the rider but this trainer is doing the pair a disservice.
