    Thanks for the video. Will be taking delivery of my Z9 today! I too use Topaz Sharpen and this is the first mention I heard of it not playing nicely with the High Efficiency* mode. Given your video is a year old, as I’m watching it, do you or anybody here know if that incompatibility has been resolved? Also, what are the other programs you found didn’t work well with that file type? Thanks.

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  ปีที่แล้ว

      Topaz hasn't been updating Sharpen, Denoise, or Gigapixel for months. All they update is Topaz Photo AI. As far as I can tell, none of first three play nicely with Nikon high efficiency RAW files.

  • @rds990
    @rds990 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 5:29 you say the "Image Size refers to the RAW files". Is that a mistake ? Does it not apply to your JPEG files ? When shooting just RAW, the menu item is grayed out on my Z8 . RAW files are always the same size....the max MP size. Can you clarify ?

    Hi! I’ve binged watched your videos and really enjoy them. I’m trying to gather a lot of the info given, but also thought I’d just straight out ask.
    Just a mom wanting to get good basketball photos of her kid and his friends lol. I have Nikon d3500 and just the original lens. Can I get a zoom lens and that be enough or do I need to really look into a new body too. I have maybe $500 to spend on this, but I’d be pushing it at that.
    But he has been in ball for two years and all the photos I have of him or just a blur off my phone. Bc I wasn’t sure if the dslr I had e would work. Thank you for your time!

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The D3500 is an entry-level DX camera. It’s great for learning photography, daylight photos, or maybe indoor with flash. But, it’s going to struggle under lowlight conditions like indoor basketball. It’s especially handicapped with the kits lens. You really need a lens that will open up to f2.8. You also need a lens in the 55-100 zoom range (or 70-200 with FX cameras). You’re talking more than your budget of $500 - even if you buy used. At this point, I’d say invest in a better lens than a new camera body. If you stick with this, you’ll eventually want a more advanced camera.

    What's working well for Cards. I love that you can make it not go black when you shoot bursts, I like having some sound and the green bars. The viewfinder and shooting feedback made a big difference. The Focus area is interesting. what sports works best with 3d I'm not having great luck with it on soccer? Jack, I suppose I could have asked you this question in the Z9 Pro Users group, but since it is 9 months down the road, and following FW 3.1 release, I was hoping you could share what you think your preferred AF Area mode would be for Ice Hockey? As a wildlife shooter, I've finally settled on a custom setup that is working extremely well for me. As a former hockey player and competitor in dance, I am aware of the limitations on the venues. AUTO-FOCUS AREA MODE: If I had to guess (on settings), I would think that dynamic small for Area Focus Mode would still be the best choice. If shooting the goalie, after initial acquisition, custom area 1x1 might work well. With the speed of hockey, I was curious if a Custom Area Large as could be - to mimic Auto-Area AF - but limit it some- might be good on break-away attempts. AF-LOCK ON: Set to 3, 2 or off? VR: I would assume for panning and movement on even with high shutter speeds? Yes? Ultimately, it will be what works best for me, but I appreciate your knowledge and input.

    • @JackBeasleyMedia
      @JackBeasleyMedia  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm going to do a "year in review" video soon with my latest settings. They've changed as I've grown with the system and with the new firmware updates. But to quickly answer, I've dropped the Dynamic modes completely and am now almost exclusive using the Wide Area and C1,2,3 depending on the situation. The ability to track faces now is so much better with the latest firmware updates.

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JackBeasleyMedia Appreciate the answer. I went and shot Ice Hockey yesterday. The plexiglass was more of the obstacle - never cleaned - than the focus area modes of the Z9. That said, I did go to dynamic small except on break-away shots (3D) because I found while the Z9 was good at picking up a face and even eye of a player, the action was so fast, with players crisscrossing in front of each other (and the refs as well) that it would jump to unwanted players or refs. if not for that, it would have worked. I was thinking the Sony A1 might not have done that. I do use the Custom areas a bunch for other things. Curious how you avoid the issues I just raised after switching from Dynamic area modes. Thanks in advance.

    Thank you Jack for going through this. Interesting incites on some of the functions. I've tried to use banks in the past but I never liked the way they were implemented. If I understand them correctly if you move to one of them and you change a setting, even just aperture or shutter speed, it updates the bank with those new settings. Maybe I'm alone in thinking this way but I wish Nikon would give us the option to lock them in so even if you make changes while in a bank the next time you go to it, it goes to what you saved them as and not what it was the last time you used it. If I'm completely miss understanding them please correct me. I bounce between landscape, sports and portraiture so I'd love to be able to use them. Great content as always and look forward to new videos in the future.

    Great video. When i shoot in horizontal mode and have focusing set for auto area AF with people, it shows me those settings in the viewfinder and the focusing points move all around. When I switch to vertical mode, it does not show auto area AF and people in the viewfinder and there it just one focus point. Am I missing some setting to use both auto area AF and people in both portrait and landscape mode?

    Hey Jack,
    Loving the content. I recently picked up a Z8 and was watching your Z9 videos trying to get some ideas. I am coming from a D810 using Back Button focus with AFC single point. The wide small mode kind of reminds me of a single point just bigger. Lol. Definitely a lot more going on with this then a D810. I think I heard you say you evolved since making this video. The second stage I was standing somewhere else and the road had trees either side the camera failed to find focus no matter what settings I used I switched to my D850 body which worked fine so this Z9 focus problem hasn't gone away with the latest firmware update.

    again a great video from you. I expected nothing else 😅😅.
    Can you help me?:
    Do you know a memory card for the Z9 with which I can shoot permanent 20 RAWs/sec?
    I tested:
    SanDisk Extreme Pro after 70 RAWs the Z9 is stottering
    Delkin CFExpress Power after 80 RAWs the Z9 is stottering
    I recognize that the examples above are valid if the cards are cold.
    If the cards are getting more hot or the weather/hall is more hot, the values are more worse.
    For some situations in sport photography (Muay Thai Boxing for example) I need sometimes longer/permanent bursts.

      I test new:
      With the "ProGrade Cobalt 325GB" I can take min 160-200 HE* RAW shots before my Z9 start to stuttering.
      160-200 shots are around 8-10 sec burst time, which is a good base for sport photography I think.

      Chelaru, you'd have to qualify this statement a bit. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean the Z9 raw file? Picture profiles change the look of your JPG with baked in settings, but also the view in the EVF and look of the histogram in the EVF. Choose something like Denim Blue and you'll see it in the EVF. Choosing the picture profile could also, potential, change the way the files are imported into LR if it is set up for Camera Specific profile instead of Adobe profile. Many of the profiles add editing features (i.e. up the contrast or brightness or saturation) and therefore change change the histogram (which if you use it) which can cause you to clip highlights or shadows by altering settings of the camera, before you take the photo. So, the statement "Every picture profile" is the same in the Z9 is not true for the Z9, nor any other camera in the Nikon family that I have used.
