    Great job. I did the trail in 1980. No companies or porters in those days. The upside is that I had the trail all to myself. The downside is that I had to carry all food, stove, cook ware, tent, gear, etc. About 80 pounds.

    Hi Matt, I walked the Inca Trail in December 2018 with my wife and children and together with two other families. We were 6 adults and 7 children at an age between 13 and 18. It was good that we so many had porters, which allowed us not to have to carry too much weight. In the end everyone including the youngest ones made it safely until the end. Thank you so much for sharing your videos, which bring back our memory of this fascinating once-in-a-lifetime experience. Greetings from Frankfurt.

    Thanks for the four videos. I really enjoyed them. That trip is not going to happen in my lifetime, so I enjoyed getting to see the area and trails around Machu Picchu. It's an amazing place, the entire hike, and it's nice to have someone take the time to video, then sequence it for public consumption. I would have loved to have seen more of Machu Picchu, though, like a walking tour, but I'll take what I can get. Thanks again.

    Great video. We made the Inca Trail a couple of weeks ago on December 2014 and it was AMAZING!! but as you said, you must be in a really good shape, since the tourism companies will not tell you how really the trek is. We didn´t have the chance to climb Wayna Picchu (although we had our tickets for that) because the weather made the route not-safe, but this is just an excuse to come back someday! I wanna thank you Matt, your videos were very informative for us and help us a lot! Greetings from Costa Rica!

    Notice the difference in the building style for the temple...much more sophisticated than the rest...and you find that exact building style at the wall on easter island, in cusco and at the abidos underground "temple" in egypte...ahh and of course in teotihuacan in mexico. That stuff is way older than the incas :)

    • @85sparrowhawk
      @85sparrowhawk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the Incas found the megalithic core and built over and around it. There is clear difference between the pre Inca civilization that made the fantastic work compared to the Incas copying of it and then the much less sophisticated modern reconstruction. Check out the channel from 'Brien Foerster' and his take on these megalithic constructions around the world including Machu Picchu.

    Great videos, thank you for posting. In your first video you said you were doing the 4 day 3 night trek. Because there was only the two of you on the trek were you forced to trek to Machu Picchu a day early?

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Simon B It's not totally clear why we went to Machu Picchu a day early. The company said that the government who manages the campgrounds was unable to repair several sites that were damaged by flooding prior to our arrival, so weren't able to accommodate some groups at the last campground before Machu Picchu. I don't know if the size of our group affected their decision.

    I've just finished watching all four of your videos, awesome guys well done. We did this trek June last year (4 days) then finished with climbing Huayna Picchu which was my favourite. Your videos have helped us relive the whole experience again, so wonderful. Thanks for sharing. P.s we also carried our own stuff, my hubby 10kg and I carried around 6kg. I'm wondering why your packs were so heavy?

    • @GlobalTreks

      Jayne Edmondson Hey, I'm glad you like the videos! Actually, I'd say your packs were unusually light. I almost don't believe you! I've been on many backpacking trips of various lengths, and have never heard of a pack that was only 6 or 10 kg. I would be interested to know the contents of your packs and how you got it so minimal. My packing is detailed in the video here: th-cam.com/video/4-uDyVKBTXk/w-d-xo.html so you can see the differences.

Since I am not aware of your specific condition, and honestly do not fully understand all of the challenges of being an amputee, I can't say whether you could complete the trail or not. I appreciate stories of people overcoming such obstacles, but also know it is necessary to be realistic. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos and wish you the best!

    Great video series! It's been really helpful. Does Amanda have any women specific items she thinks is important to bring/any tips? And if you did it again would you have brought trekking poles?

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Krista Pajala Hi Krista,I would not have brought trekking poles, as I have found it difficult to focus on properly placing 4 extremities. Using poles takes too much concentration for me, and since I'm in good physical condition and don't require them, I don't use them. However, some people have knee problems, balance issues, etc. and for them poles are essential. I know many people who swear by their poles, and there is nothing wrong with them. Just a personal preference. In terms of women specific items: Amanda was able to find a travel size perfume bottle that she really enjoyed having and says that was her #1 recommendation. It was also very cold at night, so a warm sleeping bag and sleeping bag liner was key for her. Also keep toilet paper or tissues in your tent because the cold nights have a way of causing runny noses, teary eyes, etc.

    Awesome videos!!! Going to do this trail at the end of March. Since you are from Boulder and an outdoorsman, how would you rank the Inca trail hike against a Colorado 14'er?

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      14ers are tough single day hikes. The Inca Trail requires the stamina to do about the same amount of hiking (8 hours or so) each day. No single day felt as rigorous as, for example, pike's peak (an extreme example), but is more on par with Bierstadt day after day. 3-4 miles of uphill, and 3-4 miles of downhill.

    • @mattbannantine9651

      Thanks again for your videos! I took tons of photos and a few 1 minute video clips but I just rewatched your videos and it was like I was right there again! Your trek was a little more aggressive than ours as we did the 4 day 3 night trek. Your day 1 camp was our day 2 lunch spot. Same with day 2, your day 2 camp was our day 3 lunch spot. We then stayed the night at the camp about 2 hours away from the sun gate. We got to MP early on the 4th day, spent all day touring MP then returned on the 5th day to hike up Huayna Picchu. Thanks again for your videos, I was really nervous doing the hike but watching your videos really prepared me and then rewatching them brought back a bunch of great memories. Kilimanjaro next

    That was a well documented trip i liked your thoughts during the trail all the way up to machu picchu. These ancient civilization were absolutely great and so innovante engineer for their time. And advise for a future trek i would recommend you to look for info about K2 base camp in pakistan going through the magnificent Baltoro Glacier that lead to concordia making the jonction of K2 broad peak and G2. Its a different kind of approach compared to the inca trail by its lenght his altitude and weather condition but it worth the price when seeing the mighty K2 in the karakoram range. Everest base camp trek is nice as well but the negative point is that it is over crowaded

      +EnergyRouter you're welcome pal...... I was just saying you know even though Everest base camp is of course an amazing adventure in itself from lukla to namche bazar the kalapatar the khumbu region it remains a stunning scenary..... But the Karakoram Range is more Raw Nature his landscape is lunar compare to the Himalaya Range..... The K2 base camp trek will lead you from islamabad to skardu then askhole and from there you start you trek journey to K2 which take more or less 8 days depending of the pace.... K2 base camp is the toughest trek just to let you know dear friend..... Anyway both are great adventure there is also the Anapurna trek sanctuary as well hehe if you ever heard about it.... I just love The High Altitude environment the giant peak such as Himalaya The Karakarom Nepal Tibet Giglit Baltistan in the northern east of Pakistan...... Have fun and let us know about you next project kudos and take care

      Celenia Knopp Yes, We would have spent more time before and after the trek in Peru. Traveling from the USA (or anywhere) to Lima, then connecting to Cuzco, and starting the trek is a long process. It took us 36 hours to get from our home to our hotel in Cuzco, and the same amount of time to get back. That left only a day and a half on each end of the trek, and the whole process ended up being very tiring. I would try to have 3 days on each end instead of 1.5.

    How did the backpack hold up. Looking into your North Face and the Osprey Packs Farpoint

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WhoIsKirk My pack was great. Osprey makes excellent backpacks. North Face does as well. I actually have one of each - an Osprey 42 liter pack and a North Face 65 Liter Pack. I am a big fan of attaching things to the outside of the pack (water bottles, rain gear, camera bag), so I generally look for packs with lots of little loops and straps to clip things to. Also, get a rain cover for the pack you decide on.

    My wife and I are headed there in May 2016, but we will be going the tourist route. Forty years ago I would have been with you on the trail, but old age decrepitude has brought me down.
    Question: How did you get what looks like a "private tour"? I can't imagine the company made much money with porters and cooks servicing two people.

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Hoz Holla Thanks. The privacy was the luck of the draw really. There are so many companies that can leave any day during the season, so if nobody else asks to start that day with the same company, you can be alone. We paid about $1,300 for the guide, crew, and some borrowed gear (tent), and tipped each guy at the end in addition. For 3 or 4 days of work is a decent wage for those guys on the crew. The real challenge for them is how many treks they can service in one season. It's very competitive.

    • @GlobalTreks
      @GlobalTreks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Celenia, I can't give a strong recommendation for the company overall. The porters and guide were excellent, but there were aspects that were very different than what was stated in the contract. We were not informed of them until arriving in Cuzco, and later found out the changes are done by the owner of the company on a routine basis (we suspect he's pocketing some extra cash). Not a huge deal, but significant enough to prevent me from publishing their name. Rest assured it was a small company that you likely won't even hear about in your research. An advantage to the small company was there were just the two of us in our group, which we loved, but I'm not comfortable sending you their way.

      +Thiago Hernandez I used United Mice, but as I've said, they booked a moldy hostel in aguas calientes for our last night, and it was moldy and gross. If you use them, they will book all required passes for you, but I suggest a proper hotel at the end.

    How did you manage to keep fresh batteries for your filmmaking throughout the 3 day trip?

      Dan Holguin Fitness I just bring several. The camera is not on all day...just a few hours each day at most. I have enough battery for 12 hours of use

      Yes, rechargeable batteries, but I only charged them at the hotel before and after the hike.

    Thank you for the amazing videos. I was planning to go in june but now am having confused thoughts.. is it reallly hard??? What if one wishes to stop and not continue... the steps looked really steep... am scared now although i already paid and traveling with a group of 15...

      Ruba Atallah Is it really hard? Like all things in life, it depends. If you are in good physical condition (no chronic joint problems), and you do moderate exercise once in a while, you will be ok. There is no way to stop and not continue. You will have to hike out with one of the porters if you decide to quit, but how far that is depends on how far you've made it into the mountains. If you've paid and have a large group, you should go. There will be faster people and slower people, and it will be fun and amazing.

      EnergyRouter thank you for your prompt response. One more question... are the paths on the cliffs wide??? The view was a bit scary ... Some of my friends said I shouldn't have seen any videos before the trip !

      Yes, they're plenty wide. There is not much risk of falling.

    Hi Matt, your videos are great. Just a few questions if you could answer:
    1. How did u manage to have your camera battery running for three days- will there be charging points in the trek?
    2. Are there food options for vegetarians?
    I can’t wait to trek it myself ❤️
