Even a hobbyist version with a simple yoke or threaded nipple to fit common air cylinders. Great work! This inspires me to get off my ass and learn cad/solid works and get a damn printer... I really want machine tools first.
If you do... don't get a cheap Chinese machine like I did. It's only a headache to try and get it to run properly and replace faulty parts like a warped bed.
No one that would be in the market for a gripper like this and could contribute in a meaningful way to the financial stability of Festo would use this as a solution. No to say it's clever and not well made but this is not a production product. Also if you're handling food good luck getting all the necessary approvals.

I'm not really up on 3d printing, but I am impressed by it. I can't believe that entire silver piece with the screw and all was one single print. I would have thought it would be several prints that you them put together. I was unaware that you could print something in one print that was already functional and had moving parts. That's amazing.
3D-printing is useful for printing out plastic parts that aren't sold by the manufacturer. For example, the lid-release button of a spring-loaded bottle lid.
You can print stuff a lot more puzzling than this that moves. This is a really simple example compared to most. You can make a rubix cube, for example, fully functional. Although it wouldn't work nearly as well as a machined one.

yeah I always thought the same, I built a GUNPLA set a while ago that was plastic cast like that and it blew my mind they used like different temperatures to let the pieces cool at different intervals to keep them as separate pieces

This is definitely a standard we should adopt in robotics. The benefits of this grip method vs some others could be phenomenal in things that require delicate handling.
I guess there is a slippery reason why you did not show the pickup ^^ Thats why companies who are already producing this have added textures to the inside of the claw and made it out of metal so it can withstand more torq and put more pressure on the object tje claw is supposed to hold.
i imagine the orange was a little too large for the grabbers to actually hold onto, the tangent line at the point of contact was still closer to the main portion of the design than it was to the other side of the orange. if they put grip tape on the inside of the claws, it probably could've handled the orange easily. unmodified, something a little smaller like a lime would've been about the right size. the only real problems i see with the design is there's not any grip at the tips, it has to be in roughly the center of the claws to be grabbed; and deflection over repeated use, which would depend on the material
The claw is supposed to form to the shape of what it grabs its not a "slippery reason" it literally is made to encapsulate the object. Even if it was a problem just adding some form of grip tape to the inside of it would immidately solve it but that doesnt matter when the object is much smaller that it successfully encapsulates it
This would have been printed from TPU which is actually really grippy, you can use it to print tires. The orange is just too big for the size he printed.
put a varied inward lattice on the compliant arms of the gripper, and run either a thread or wire through each prong at tension, it'll allow for the prong to pull at the tip, giving it more tensile grabbing capability.
I'm definitely going to use this manipulator design in my Astromech inspired droid when I get around to building one, a manipulator like this is simply too useful to *not* have!
I use blender for modeling all the parts. And then I animate it just for fun… (for something like this which has a lot of gears CAD software like fusion360 would make more sense, but I just prefer the speed of modeling in blender…)

@@printchallenge7158 I havent printed with PETG yet. I dont know if this actually solves my problem. I use a round plate and fixate things with double sided tape. I guess your design can be used to hold small stuff.
It would be cool if it used some sort of plunger instead of a twisting knob to actuate the beaks. I feel like a smaller version would be useful for threading in bolts in automotive applications
I feel they shouldn't be so symmetrical. I mean you only need them to curve inwards so maybe slanting some of the hinge pieces so they have a easier time bending.
If you were to shape the worm drive more cone shaped so that you could bring the three fingers closer together at the base along with giving their inner surface that tapers to a point you could potentially make an automatic fetching jig.

Claw machines usually have 2 settings, strong or weak, and they decide if you can get the prize like that

I'm not really up on 3d printing, but I am impressed by it. I can't believe that entire silver piece with the screw and all was one single print. I would have thought it would be several prints that you them put together. I was unaware that you could print something in one print that was already functional and had moving parts. That's amazing.
3D-printing is useful for printing out plastic parts that aren't sold by the manufacturer. For example, the lid-release button of a spring-loaded bottle lid.
