So in terms of "did he get a fine?", the answer is no because he didn't evade tax, he legally avoided it. It was purely a moral outrage. And like was pointed out in the clip, the politicians all do it.

In the UK there is a system called PAYE (Pay As You Earn), basically, if you get paid wages the tax is taken away before you get paid. You will get your pay packet, and it will say how much tax you've paid out of those earning.
There is more to the system but basically, if you are part of the working classes, you simply don't have the chance to avoid paying income tax. It is not an option available to you, so when it comes to light that someone in the public eye, and earning very good money, is found to be avoiding paying their fair share of tax, the public can turn against them.
In this case, Jimmy did exactly the right thing, he held his hands up and just admitted his stupidity and he doesn't try to justify it in any terms other than his own stupidity.......and the Roasting these guys give him really helped also.
David Cameron was UK Prime Minister when the press broke this story, and he came out giving statements about just how immoral Jimmy was for doing this tax avoidance.....Fast forwards 4 years and guess who was caught with his money stashed away offshore.
You've no chance of cleaning up a system when those in charge of it actively abuse and lie about it........the shear gall of David Cameron to publicly criticise Jimmy for doing exactly the same as him is staggering.

Firstly Tax is completely different in the UK to the US, your system is a mess. Ours is much simpler. Let's just say what he did wasn't illegal, it is immorral. And no, no politician would dare to try and close the loopholes (of which there are many) because it is not the poorer people than can leverage them, only the super rich who can afford to pay a slippery accountant. The majority of people who are employed, in the UK, pay tax via Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Tax is taken off your wages before you get paid, we never see the money we pay in taxes before it is invested in the infrastructure. What the richer people are doing is not paying their share of taxes, but still taking advantage of what we (the poorer ones) are paying for. That is the immorral part. When this came to light, the government needed a news story for people to get worked up about whilst they hid some other things. The Media obliged by sacrificing Jimmy Carr and Gary Barlow. Jimmy fessed up and was forgiven, none of the corrupt Politicians and Businessmen admitted to it and they are still doing it today. We have a great system but lots of corrupt people playing the system

  • @daveofyorkshire301
    @daveofyorkshire301 ปีที่แล้ว

Every corporate owner or big earner knows how to reduce their tax burden by at least half perfectly legally... whilst normal PAYE wage slaves pay 40% they're paying 10%. How?😮 They incorporate themselves, get paid as a company, take dividends instead of a salary, have offshore corporate bank accounts and assets in tax havens like Anguilla, Monaco, Lichtenstein etc and only move money to the UK to actually spend it...

Like they say David Cameron's parents used those loopholes. Dc called out Jimmy for avoidance (legal) but when Gary Barlow from take that was caught in evasion (illegal), as he was DC's pal, didn't get a mention.

It's how large companies can make loads of money in the UK but transfer in debts from the foreign company that owns them and move all their profits offshore so they end up making £1.63 in profit for the year so their tax burden is a percentage of a penny - and it's legal!

HMRC = His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (inland revenue). Tax Evasion (illegal). Tax Avoidance (legal - unless proven beyond doubt to be deliberate, but immoral) This can include * accidentally * delaying filing so that received monies fall in to the following tax year, starting limited companies with tax exemption grants, taking loans from said companies and never paying them back, then writing off those monies as a loss and such.

Tax avoidance is legal but regarded as immoral whilst tax evasion is illegal. What you said about businesses and accountants is also true- however, if your husband didn’t pay $10k tax (for example) on his business earnings and Starbucks didn’t pay $10m, both are seen as immoral but one impacts society significantly more. Jimmy being a multimillionaire meant that significantly less money was going back into the tax pot than if you or I did it.
It was also somewhat hypocritical of Jimmy to make jokes about politicians, bankers, etc., when he was doing as bad as all of them.

  • @Andy_U

He had to pay interest and late fees, he might have gone to jail if he had tried to obstruct the investigation, very few people go to jail if they are able to pay the tax back. The UK has a law where you are required to disclose the nature of any special arrangements you have made and as long as you disclose that they don't criminally prosecute. For the record he arranged for his income from gigs to be paid to a company and then borrowed the money from the company with no intention of paying it back and the company claimed the loan as a loss. It came out a week after he had been highly critical of other peoples tax arrangements on another show.

Tax Avoidance, not tax evasion. One carries a penalty, usually a fine, the other carries a jail sentence.
Avoidance implies using mechanisms to pay less tax. Tax Evasion is a deliberate and criminal attempt to defraud His Majesty's government.
I'm not saying Jimmy would sue, but it's nice to be fair and right at the same time. You're implying Jimmy is a criminal but it was handled in a civil matter, not criminal.

If you are in the public eye you can scream "legal loophole" all you want, and end you career right then. Jimmy lives in England and a country with extensive universal welfare systems you must always expect to be smoked if you are not willing to pay your fair share. I live in Norway, and over the last few years we have had a problem with rich people taking their fortunes to Switzerland. These people can legally do this, but they have forever tainted their reputation, and their words have no impact on public debates in Norway anymore. Their money was more important to them, than their reputation in their home country. It is obvious here that Jimmy was not the one looking for a loophole, but got one presented by his accountant. It was still his call, and he put so much trust in his accountant, so that he did not think it over much. Maybe he thought that the accountant would not present him with anything immoral, but still Jimmy is the responsible party. He did the only thing he could have done if his career is more important to him than the money he tried to save, and he did in very well. I think he is mostly forgiven, and I suppose he has paid the taxes he should have in the first place.

I know I'm late to comment but: I think the biggest cultural gap you have here is that Britain is very much a socialist democracy. If you don't pay your share of tax, especially if you're wealthy, the country can't have socialism. I think in America, the socialism you experience largely does not directly benefit you (eg. military), or if it does it's extremely variable based on who you are and where you live (eg. schooling, parks, law enforcement). In Britain it's a social responsibility to pay tax so that you can benefit from free healthcare, excellent free schools etc.
People know that. They see you as not playing your part if you don't pay tax. If you're dying because you're on a long waiting list for public care, even though you paid tax all your life, then it's probably because the rich don't pay their tax. I think it's almost the opposite in America?
I've lived in the USA, and I live in Australia which is a very similar situation to Britain.

Jimmy didn’t admit he was committing tax evasion… they found out. Taking accountability after the fact isn’t great. Obviously he wasn’t alone doing this but sayings he’s not the worst offender doesn’t make his actions any better. My point is just that Jimmy has to do this; taking this roasting saved his career and allowed him to continue to profit as a great comedian. So he deserves our ridicule not our defence.
