  • Cycling across Cuba at 15mph is the perfect speed to experience this beautiful country. I began the trip in Santiago de Cuba, headed through the steamy Sierra Maestra mountains to Baracoa, then headed west toward Havana, passing through all the major cities. The entire trip was about 850 miles through beautiful Cuban countryside.

My family is from Havana I’m the first US born in our fam and I’ve never been there. I’m a recent bike fanatic and is my work out sanity which is how I found your video. I absolutely love that you all loved Cuba and your commentary was great to listen to. Makes me sad I’ve not been there yet. Will soon and hope to cycle through that type of landscape 👍🏼

I did a 2 week bike trip through Cuba in 2009, ending up in Santiago de Cuba after cycling along the south coast. Good memories. I loved the basic food in the typical homestay - beans, rice, stewed chicken, and a simple salad. Couldn't ask for more. My big regret was that I speak no Spanish, and English didn't seem to be widely spoken. But really nice people, good music, and pretty much ideal cycling conditions.
I've done two rides in SE Asia, and in both cases - Cambodia and Laos/Vietnam - I bought a local bike and gave it away at the end of the trip. It's a good feeling. Bicycles are magic. :-)

in the public restrooms washing your hands was interesting. You need three things to wash your hands; water, soap, towel to dry. Well, the towel was your shirt or pants, because there never was any towels. In 1/3 of the toilets there was no water and in one case, there was a lady standing beside the sink with a bottle of water to pour over your hands. In an equal number of places, there was no soap.

If you thought not having soap and water in the restroom was a problem, imagine not having a toilet SEAT. Yep, no toilet seat and it wasn’t just confined to public facilities. One of the rooms we stayed in had no toilet seat, which was matched by the fact there was no toilet paper. In its place, somebody had carefully torn individual sheets of toilet paper from a roll and placed them on the back of the toilet.

Possible to ride a road bike with small tires there?

    • @duzer

Yeah, some of the roads are pretty beat up, but you could pull it off...thicker tires would be better though

Thanks for the great video. I'm planning a similar trip. If you don't mind may I ask a few questions.
#1 Why would one not rent a bike from a local company such as www.ciclocuba.com/ They seem to have a fleet of pretty nice bikes, perhaps this is a new development since your trip a year and a half ago?
#2 When you flew from Colorado to Cuba did they charge you one fee to take the bike the whole way? Would it have made a difference if you flew to miami Obtained a Bike There and brought it from there? Or Same Fee?
#3 If you were traveling with sombody might it be worth it to combine two bikes in one box?
#4 WOuld you consider brining a beloved bike both ways?
#5 Were you able to make some easy detours into jungles and coral reef beaches or was this impractical by bike.
#6 Is there a good coast-side route at times?
#7 Is it pretty easy to find places to stay? Would you consider bringing a tent.
    Would greatly appreciate any advice.
    THanks

      HI!!!
When I went, I couldn't find any places to rent...but that would certainly make it easier. I had to pay to take my bike from Denver to cancun, and then another charge from cancun to havana. Two bikes in one box would be very difficult. You can take detours ALL over the place, easy! Plenty of coastal riding too! It's super easy to find places to stay, almost every town has a Casa Particular where people rent out rooms from their homes. Have fun!

Thanks could I ask one more question. Did you fly direct from US to Cuba with the bike & if so was there any issue with the Obtaining the proper card. As I understand it you are "not to have excessive free time there & the itinerary should be written out" I'm concerned that by bringing a bike they might consider that a red flag for excessive free time.

    • @duzer
      @duzer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I flew from Denver to Cancun, then got on another airline from cancun to Havana. They didn't ask one single question at the airport in havana...it's super easy to get in. Getting the visa card in cancun was easy, just walked up to the airline counter and bought it.
