Santner had seven test match 3fers for a spinner who predominantly played on pitches that didn't assist him much. A spinner in New Zealand conditions. I personally wasn't suprised that he finally ended up producing a match winning performance in conditions that suited him ideally. He's been an improving left arm finger spinner for a long time, albeit especially in white ball cricket, but there is plenty of cross-over in terms of relevant skills. His particularly bare showing in Sri Lanka in the previous series was in my opinion partly due to him being somewhat underdone in terms of bowling long red ball spells, in combination with the fact that the Galle pitches that were used in both tests were pretty low and slow which is pretty typical of Sri Lankan conditions. Santner, being a tall bowler, is always going to be assisted by conditions that bounce as well as turn. It wasn't much of a suprise that he was so successful in Pune, whereas, even though Santner wasn't playing in the 3rd test, it was Patel who was so successful in Mumbai, which was a bit slower and bounced a little less. Patel being a much shorter bowler, and on average a little slower through the air, is a left arm spinner more suited to the Wankhede conditions, as evidenced by his having taken 25 wickets in two test matches at the ground. Absolutely remarkable that! I wonder if any bowler in test cricket history has done so well in just two tests on the one away-from-home ground. It would be an interesting stat to see who the most successful are in that regard. It might well be a world record. When you talk about who the best test spinners in the world are, it's starting to get a bit silly leaving Ajaz Patel's name out of it. He just keeps doing it in subconrinental conditions, which are obvuously the only tests in which he is selected. Look at his test record now. I'm not suggesting he's in the top two or three, but he's certainly got to be in the top 10 to 12. I reckon he'd be in the top 3 or 4 non Asian spinners, along with the likes of Lyon, (at the top, obviously) and Muharaj. Peidt, Harmer, Bashir, Leach at his best, and perhaps Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy would probably be contenders at times, but Patel has actually won 3 test matches off the back of his performances now, along with other fine performances in unsuccessful test matches for New Zealand. Obviously he was on the loosing side during his Wankhede 10fer and 14 wicket match haul on the previous India tour, but he basically bowled New Zealand to victory on test debut against Pakistan in Abu Dabi with 2 - 64 & 5 - 59, then against Bangladesh in Mirpur with 2 - 54 & 6 - 57, and now against India in Mumbal second time around with 5 - 103 & 6 - 57. He has 7 5fers and 2 10fers in a match, and he's barely played 20 tests.
Preparation and playing according to the situation and finally the confidence to pull yourselves over the line defines this NZ team. My compliments to the NZ team.
With Williamson back on deck and no Anderson, I think NZ might be slight favourites but I worry about Tim Southee, especially with no Trent Boult. He looked pedestrian against Australia in NZ and personally I think he should have pulled the pin after that tour. England also has some issues. If they had Wood and Archer I'd have them as firm favourites but they have neither. Ben Stokes is playing busted and I can't see him bowling much in NZ but if he does he'll be a difficult prospect. The one thing NZ have going for them is apart from Root and Duckett the English batting has been very fragile. While the motto of attacking cricket is great there seems to be a bit of panic when someone has to grind out some runs. A fascinating battle of contrasting philosophies.
They produce those raging turners because they have no confidence they can definitely win in neutral conditions. But on those sandpits, the gap between the teams narrow and any skiddy left arm trash can be made to look like murali or warne. Jadeja has made a whole career out of it. 5-0 loading in Australia
