Great question 👍 Yup you can - here's a demo of how I add a new paragraph block to an existing pattern and then that is filtered down to each instance where it is used vimeo.com/942033332?share=copy
@@jamiewp Now that's amazing. Very impressive. The styles isn't impressive because that was always possible with CSS classes, but actually adding HTML elements, that's a different story 🙂.
@@jamiewp I am fundamentally component-oriented due to my programming background. Adhering to the principle of not repeating oneself is central to this approach, and components are instrumental in achieving it. Cwicly (sadly now defunct) championed this in the WordPress ecosystem, and other builders are now taking note. Given the corporate enthusiasm for CI, this methodology allows designers to create discrete design elements and assemble them into larger, nested structures. There's no need for guesswork… you can provide clients and their staff with a manual or a set of parts. While the block editor offers considerable flexibility, it unfortunately conflates design with content, representing a step back towards a less clear separation of concerns.
wow! this is amazing. Thanks for sharing. I can see this being super helpful to keep things consistent, and helpful when a client wants to change something in one area of a site so it reflects through the rest. game changer.
Ooh! This is the feature you mentioned in the roundup video isnt it? I cant wait to use this for CTAs - even as a new-to-WP user, I can see how this is awesome.
This and content only/zoomed out mode will game-changing for me as a freelance block theme developer/designer. Finally I will be able to give access to clients without worrying that they break the layout.
brand new to WP. I saw a few videos on Generate PRess and Generate Block editor where they were making adjustments (padding, margins etc) solely for the device like mobile or desktop and these settings only applied when the particular device was selected. 2024 theme doesn't seem to have this. If I make any adjustments like padding, it is carried across all devices. How do we get that kind of device specific adjustments within core WP and 2024? Is that even possible?
Is there some way to have overrides for the Media & Text block so that users can change the image? You can get similar results if you use column blocks, but then you lose the ability to have them stacked on mobile and/or mix them with featured image.
This is so good..... it will make patterns what you might naturally hope them to be. If you take an organised approach to site design this will step change productivity.
Thanks for the video. I knew about the Patterns update but thanks to you I discovered the Synced Pattern Instances plugin which should be in the core of WP IMO. It's perfect to keep track.
About time...this is what patterns/templates shiould have been when they launched. In fact when I first came across templates/patterns this is what I tried to do, and was confused as to why I couldn't edit the style across all instances. It's why I never used patterns, basically.
This is great. A bit like reusable blocks but having the ability to have the design reusable but the content being different. Shame they aren't trackable (yet another plugin - a bit like Find my blocks!) Great Video. Thanks Jamie.
@@jamiewp what I'm still missing is inserting other elements into the "components". Like either having a replaceable placeholder, or truly inserting anything anywhere inside the component. That latter is technically probably riskier to implement. A replaceable placeholder would already work in most cases.
I wonder why they didn't announce? I have been checking regularly... it was sopposed to be released months ago... and i couldnt find any updates... i thought they had punted it.
@@jamiewp awesome thanks! I'm pretty new to WordPress and have bought about getting the Gutenberg plugin, but since it's more of a beta testing ground I'm not sure. Have you ever experienced it breaking anything on your site?

Its a total game changer. Its something that frustrated the hell out of me when I started using Wordpress again.. I couldn't understand why you couldn't create re-usable components but now you can. Thanks for the simple run through.
Don't really understand why this is new? I have synced patterns already and if I change the pattern and save it, it updates everywhere. What am I missing?
please advice me, as a theme ,what is the best ? Generate press or blocksy? And i want to switch from elementor to gutenberg, but i'm between stackable and greenshift. Can you give me some directions ? Best to use or beat to have ?
Is this another Gutenberg thing? For the future, could we have a special mark notifying us that it is a Gutenberg feature. Then those of us not using Gutenberg can just skip it? Seriously - there are a lot of us that are not interested in Gutenberg 🙂
Terminology: Many are miss-using the term Gutneberg. I think you are talking about the "Block Editor" (a misnomer itself, because you are NOT editing blocks, but pages) not "Gutenberg", which is a plugin you can install to test the latest beta version functionality - DO NOT use the Gutenberg plugin on a production site. Cheers 👍
This is a terrible element if the developer installed this feature and did not inform the client about it... Then the content manager fixed something on another page and messed it up on all the other pages. 🥲 The developers of the WP functionality should have taken a more serious approach to the notification that this block is part of a component... Maybe draw some kind of icon...
In the latest version it’s much much clearer as you can’t edit the pattern in the page. It takes you back to the original pattern and makes it clear you are editing the source 👍
Can you add a new element to a pattern? For example, can I add a new text element or button and have it show up wherever it’s been used?

Nice one Jamie... When patterns were announced a while back, I had a feeling it would become a key feature to watch out for.
