This is the problem with the current crop of Maesters. They store knowledge but they don't make any use of it.
There's probably a half dozen solutions to the White Walker crisis hidden in that citadel, but most of the Maesters are too blinded by ego to look for it.

It's like when a country is brought to war and any able bodied man are proposed to take to arms for the war. @@devanov3103 Actually most people of low birth were capable of fighting, as their daily activities usually consisted to a great extent of physical labor, and many of their tools ?(which they are adept to handle) turn out to be surprisingly effective weapons. But that doesn't necessarily lead to combat skills. Soldiers also have to coordinate, follow the chain of command, know when to attack and when not, and stay disciplined even when things go wrong (eventually, something always goes wrong) until victory is achieved. Apart from being difficult to teach, spreading these skills among the lower classes would be dangerous for the ruling classes themselves.

GRRM is a genius. He will never finish the books or he will only have them released once he's dead. That way he can keep the fans interested and the money flowing until the day he dies. He also doesn't have to deal with disappointed fans because they can only feel disappointed *after* reading the last book. I'm currently reading Fire&Blood and I love it. Westeros has the lore I can invest myself in. The lord of the rings on the other hand is very cringe because it's too much magic and other convenient plot-devices, the movies are especially terrible. There's zero logic in every battle and so much plot-armor that you can't even feel anxious. So they make a few beta-protagonists die in order to have people die and that's it. I will never get over Aragorn's cringe cavalry charge, where thousands of orcs are somehow not able to cut off the legs of the handful of horses that make up the charge. yeEaAyYY, mY hERoEs aRE sOoO cOoL, LoOk hOW tHEy dEfEAteD thE eVIL orCS.

People are focusing on many parts of the dialogue.
But there is one I'd like to draw attention to.
He does spend the beginning impressing that it was dangerous. That it was foolhardy, and risky.
But then, he immediately adds. "That man is Alive. Because of you. You should be proud."
He warns him of the dangers, but his pride isn't more important to him, then simple thanks that a man's life has been saved. A man neither knew well, or valued. He saved a life, and Ebrose takes the time to remind Sam that this is a very very good thing. Because life is valuable, in and of itself.
I like the character of Ebrose. He's cynical, suspicious, and intelligent. But he has basic empathy, and above all has the very human trait of valuing the fact that hold of a second, this Sam has just saved a guy we dismissed as too far gone, this is brilliant. A less brilliant writer would have fixated on how this was a negative, and had Sam's teachers penalise him for his bravery for his success, out of envy, or jealousy, or annoyance at his success. But Ebrose actually behaved like a normal, rational human being in that situation.
When was the last time we saw that in the authority figures of our popular fiction? Excellent writting, because it felt right.

Eh. One of the details of the maesters that ASoIaF goes over is that a major fault to them is that while they are some of the most well-educated men in Westeros and routinely used as advisors on multiple subjects, they are extremely conservative (not in the political sense, shut up, not what I'm talking about) and are very slow to accept change. Samwell may have pulled a Hail Mary and saved Jorah Mormont, but he did so using a procedure he was told _directly_ by his superiors was too easily contaminable, banned from practice, and did so anyway.
The Archmaester's judgment here is spot-on. If you can take risks and make them pay off, the best you can hope for is a mulligan, because the next risk gambles the lives of everyone around you. Rewarding the careless treatment and handling of highly infectious diseases is a recipe for disaster.

The thing is, the greyscale takes a bit to show up, you wouldn't know that you got infected just on the next day, which it is. The day after they saw Jorah together. So, Samwell could still have it (the procesure was MESSY) and give it to everyone he touches.
Another thing is, just before Sam arrived, Jorah had been writing a goodbye/I love you letter to Dany. EVERYTHING he touched (paper, quill, parchment) are very likely contaminated and if they weren't burnt and someone touched it - infection spreads im the citadel.
And Jorah himself - after the procedure, he's seen wearing THE SAME CLOTHES as from before. The disease probably sits in the folds on his shirt and other garments.
My head cannon - Samwell did, in fact, infect THE WHOLE CITADEL - and this is how he became the Arch Maester at the end; there was no one left beside him ...

Yes. If he killed himself he could be buried in his family crypt and given a funeral as a knight who died from greyscale at the citadel. He was going to have to go to the smoking sea

Yes. He’d kill himself by falling on his sword, save himself the suffering on becoming a zombie in Valyrian ruins. Also he’d get to be buried with the rest of his family and get a proper funeral.

I actually learned a lot from Sam here. That other people are probably way smarter than me. Like im a statistician and im thought i hit a bottleneck to optimize my model. I thought i can experiment and find out myself but im too stupid for that. Then realized what if there are other books in other languages. Then found out the Japanese figured out this problem. I had to manually translate the book to english.

  • @crysicle
    @crysicle 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

From the likes on some of the comments, I find the opinion that the other maester's abilities were poor just from the few scenes unfounded. The grand maester himself states it clearly - curing advanced greyscale is rarely successful and very dangerous due to likelihood of infection, an expertise coming from years of experience. Even from a layman's view, it's obvious that likely only people with high constitution would survive the procedure.
Yet from the fact that Sam was one of the few who had a successful procedure, some people conclude that the maesters whom attempted the cure and failed couldn't follow simple instructions either due to incompetence or ego. I imagine that if the shoe was on the other foot - if Jorah would've died and Sam got himself and others infected, i suspect those same people would conclude that Sam was a naive idiot whom should not have even been given the chance to be in the citadel.
The former opinion seems to be guided not by reasoning, but rather by a selective interpretation of events and a tendency to assign blame without a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved. Even when the relevant information is presented to the viewer to begin with.

There was also a special ointment that had to be applied just going off memory after each peel of the skin. All the while the patient has to be still and you have to keep in mind lack of protective gear available to avoid infecting yourself.

I mean the guy in charge tells us the Arch Maester who had successfully cured two cases of advanced greyscale died on his 3rd attempt. We are talking about quite possibly the most educated and qualified man in Westeros, with a proven record of success, failing due to how extremely dangerous the proceadure is. It's quite reasonable to have such practice banned in the citadel considering the odds
