can I say THE FUCKING FORESHADOWING IN THE PROLOGUE?!?! all the bodies were burnt leaving no blood, and the one time blood was shown, it WAS red. but because every other body had pink blood and the prior knowledge that it's canonically still red in danganronpa we simply ignore the red blood as a mistake or fluke. even when the detectives briefly call it out we're given an answer from the citizens that don't give an answer that makes sense if the color was the weird part so we just completely forget about the blood on the lock! THAT WAS SO FUCKING COOL THEY REALLY PULLED A FAST ONE ON US!
You hit the nail on the head when it comes to rain code (though i like chapter 2), but i also kind of dislike how the suspects are treated more like pawns rather than characters. The structure of the mystery labyrinth strips any characterization from the mystery-solving process (peacekeepers as "prosecution", shinigami explaining the motives instead of the culprits, lack of pre-kill flashback, etc.) So even when i love the mysteries in some cases, the characters feel off. Theres a reason why people like cases 0, 2, and 4 and not 1 and 3. Case 0's and Case 4's list of suspects are part of the main plot, wile case 2 removes martina as a prosecutor (for the most part) and has the 3 students refute the arguments while bickering amongst themselves. I get these suspects are lesser characters, but so are the witnesses in Ace Attorney and they have tons of characterization. That said, i still like the game, and everything you said about the final 2 chapters wrings true. (I also love the master detectives and their DLC.)
I think the best part about Rain Code's ending is how open-ended it is, leaving a lot of room for speculation on what a sequel would look like. Will Shinigami return? Is Kurumi the new protagonist? This was a weak Danganronpa game, but a decent Ace Attorney look-alike.
i dont think using v3's ending to criticize rain codes existance is fair since i believe the context is utterly different than what v3 was saying that being said i pretty much agree 1:1 when it comes to rain code itself - predictable mysteries that get worse until ch4, mystery labyrinth that is more of a glossy hinderance than an improvement vs dr trials, most chars being safe tropes familiar to kodakas work etc etc great video
Though I still feel weird about this game being so similar to Danganronpa post-V3, helmed by a lot of the same staff, I can at least see the differences to an extent. I appreciate the comment. Thank you.
This game reminds me of how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got so sick of writing Sherlock Holmes that he kills the character by throwing him off a cliff. A few years later Doyle returned to writing Sherlock Holmes and never addressed the contradiction. I think Doyle and Kodaka both realized that this is what they’re going to be known for and just embraced it. It’s a little repetitive but still very entertaining.
actually, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did indeed provide an explanation for Holmes' return after seemingly killing him off. When Conan Doyle eventually brought Holmes back in the 1903 short story "The Adventure of the Empty House", Holmes explains to a shocked Dr. Watson that he had faked his death to fool his enemies. The period between Holmes' supposed death in 1891 and his reappearance in 1894 is referred to by Holmes aficionados as the "Great Hiatus". Conan Doyle used this three-year gap to provide a plausible explanation for Holmes' absence and apparent demise.
Haven’t played Rain Code yet, has been stuck in my backlog since release. Won’t be watching this video until I’ve played it through, hopefully it gives me that motivation! Thank you for your videos
I really love Rain Code! It’s one of my favorite games right now. While I can’t exactly disagree with a lot of your criticisms, and I definitely have a few of my own, overall I really found myself connected to the story and characters. I was more engaged in the mysteries in Rain Code than in Danganronpa personally, but honestly I think that’s just because I was spoiled for most of the cases in Danganronpa before playing them (by my own fault for not staying out of the fandom until I finished the games.) I mean I still had to figure out the details but I already knew the killer for a lot of the cases. So it was nice to go into Rain Code blind and figure out the cases as I play like I’m supposed to. I did figure out a lot of the details in the cases early on but it mostly made me think ‘wow I’m so smart’ more than ‘wow this game is so predictable’ lol. Also Rain Code has Vivia Twilight in it so it’s automatically the best game ever/hj
Also!! Congrats on making the first Rain Code video essay!! I believe this is the first but if anyone knows of an earlier one correct me if I’m wrong. I do search Rain Code on TH-cam and sort by newest and scroll through all the new videos almost every day though so I’m pretty sure it is. This may seem excessive but I’m autistic and Rain Code is my current special interest and I crave more content
Thank you for the kind words. I don't know for sure whether this really is the first Rain Code analysis on TH-cam, but I'm happy it connected with you either way. I'm certain more videos will appear down the line. Appreciated!
Great stuff! I felt kind of similar playing through it. Like it had some high highs and some rather dull middling moments. It's nice to see the Danganronpa folks have been able to come up with something good and keep going though.
Rain Code is one of the best VR games I've ever played! I feel a moral obligation to inform gamers that you can play this game in full 360° VR using UEVR (free). After experiencing it for the first time, I've struggled to understand why it worked so well in VR and I've concluded: its sum is greater than its parts. It's not just that you can walk through the rain-soaked, foggy night surrounded by the neon-lit city (with prominent skyline buildings), or the physicality in the collection of characters, or mysteries coming to life to be solved, or the creative/abstract/surreal artistic use of 3D spaces or the way the anime-style graphics reduce hardware lag... it's the balance between all these elements combined. I hope sometime there will be other fans of the game who can confirm if I'm being deluded or who also see something special. I wrote a Reddit post with more details, like my UEVR settings, in r/RainCode titled "one of the best VR games I've ever played"
I very much agree with your thoughts. I was sceptical yet excited to play Rain Code but ended up pretty disappointed with it. As you mentioned Danganronpa made me feel for the characters in the series, victims and culprits alike. Rain Code fell flat for me in that regard and thus I just didn’t care about anything that happened throughout the game. There is potential and I hope the next game, whether a sequel or something else, will turn out much better. I’ll be more sceptical though for the next one. Great video!
I'm hoping whatever comes next that it refines Rain Code's better aspects. Danganronpa 2 proved that you can really step things up from the predecessor on the gameplay side, so hopefully that'll happen here too. Thank you!
My theory is that Danganronpa V3 was pretty much a TV show/video game with the characters being played by fans that were brainwashed into this either by choice or were actually kidnapped by crazy fan of the series and was done illegally. My theory is that V3 is in the same twisted universe as Rain Code, because the world government which probably replace the The governments of the world, pretty much allowed a bunch of dangerous, criminals called the peacekeepers and the Amaterasu corporation in Kanai Ward city when they constantly rains for I think a bunch of years, which will definitely mess up the ecosystem, but whatever. And the peacekeepers are pretty much just criminal that do whatever they want , if they think you’re a criminal, they lock you up and don’t even investigate properly. They’re pretty much just abusing their power as gang members. Yuma KoKohead might be related to Makoto Naegi& Kyoko Kirigiri might be their actual kid,Danganronpa is pretty much imaginary and just a TV show. The actors could’ve gotten married and actually have a kid in the real world. And I suspect the other characters are either relatives or children of Danganronpa series(Halara : Chiaki Nanami and Hajime Hinata child or relative) ???
No lie I felt the same way. the game was a drag to get through and the ending was really great. But I will admit I did see the ending coming really early, all because of one thing. Spoilers The moment we went to the factory and we saw the meat buns being made, and the zombies around eating them. I thought about the anime Big O. Mostly the line of tomato's being grown. If you know you know. That's when I knew where this was gonna go down.
I just feel like that should just make a danganrompa game, it can be a prequel coming before v3 hell they dont even need to have a junko but it would solve there weird making games that feel like well made rip offs I get why they dont but still they've already broken 3v's ending through theses game so why not
The only thing I hated in Rain Code is how they killed-off the first 5 detectives we meet. I mean almost 70% OF the trailers had scenes of them to the point I thought they were the main cast who we gonna work with, but NOPE! Not only their screen time was short, they also had nothing to do with the plot. I do love the game in general, annoys me what they decided to do with those 5, going the Danganronpa style, although I liked the other 4 that we ended up working with in each chapter, I would really prefer if it was the other 5, in fact I prefer it if all 9 were involved.
they might've had a bit of relation to the plot, it was most likely Yomi Hellsmile who hired the assassin to impersonate Zilch and kill everyone on the train, in order to prevent detectives arriving in Kanai Ward who could challenge the Peacekeeper's authority
Still watching the video as of typing this, but one of the main turn-offs for me with Rain Code is definitely Shinigami. I adore her designs a *lot* and honestly her English VA's performance carries the character. But in writing? It's like... They don't have a clear idea on what they want her to *be.* On one hand, they want you to like her because she cares a lot about Yuma and is supportive of him. She's wacky and blunt, but ultimately well-meaning. On the other hand though, they want her to fill in the same role as Monokuma: Mascot character that's a dick to everybody (including Yuma sometimes) just for the silliness of it. Those two opposing character archetypes just *do not work* simultaneously for a single character. By having Shinigame flip-flop between them the entire game, you're sort of just left with a disingenuous dick with tits who doesn't leave you alone because plot. She's polarizing, but not in a fun way like Monokuma. She's barely above the Monokubs, and that's already a low bar to start with.
Pretty much Danganronpa 1-3 and V3 was an awesome series, and V3 blew my mind revealing that the entire series plus the other 53 in their world was all a TV show, video game, an anime that lasted for a long time in their world. And the pink blood was a dead giveaway that the entire series was imaginary , and got real Meta introducing TH-cam fans and other fans of the series. either rooting for hope or despair. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 And the character saying f🤬🤬🤬the fans, we choose neither we choose the fu🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 Die instead of being used as pawns and some twisted game .and I love that, actually like it when the characters actually acknowledged their they’re actually imaginary, but still don’t give a f🤬🤬🤬and move on. I hope you try out the yakou spinoff story written as, well, a short story with music. Builds the world by shrinking the scale.

@@Night_Willows SoySauceAsian has a decent spoiler free review where he compares it to Danganronpa's writing style.

probably wont play raincode since i prefer watching ppl play games over playing them myself. But its definitely one of my favorite games all time.
